Abstract

This research is discussed “Disabled” poem dealing with depression that happened in the speaker condition between his past and future in Wilfred Owen’s “Disabled”. It  focusees on   two major purposes: (1) to find out, to classifies, and describe  the  metaphor  as  seen  through  in  Wilfred  Owen’s  “Disabled”.  (2)  to understand the symbol that reveals depression in Wilfred Owen’s “Disabled”. This research is used written data. The data and the theories were taken from written form and internet browsing. In this study, the researcher used some theories. They were of figure of speech, metaphor, symbol, and depression. Furthermore, the  approaches were used structural approach, formalistic approach, and psychological approach. The approaches were applied to determine the approach in analyzing the metaphor and symbol found in poem. There were two metaphors related to depression, physical depression   and   psychological   depression.   Physical   depression   described   the speaker’s  condition  and  situation  which   cause   the  depression.  Psychological depression  was  the  effect  of  his  disability.  Moreover,  there  were  two  symbols revealing depression namely disappointment and death.   Keywords: Metaphor, Irony, Symbol, Depression

Abstract

Hyperbole employs a sharp-witter arrangement of words, images or meanings, meant to produce a specific effect on an audience. This paper focuses on hyperbole in television advertisement. The aims is to know the kinds of hyperbole used in television advertisement and to discuss the purposes of using hyperboles in television advertisement. This research uses descriptive method which involves the following steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data.This study presents only two types of hyperbole. Referential equivalent method is used to determine the kinds of hyperboles in television advertisement. Meanwhile, pragmatic equivalent method is used to analyze the purpose of of using hyperboles in television advertisement. The first is visual hyperbole and the second is verbal hyperbole. The purposes of using hyperboles in television advertisement are to exaggerate the ideas that need stress, to add an amusing effect in the text, and to grab the attention or to attract the customer. Abstract

The research entitled Lopakhin’s Capitalist Points of View Dealing with Social Class and Class Struggle in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard aims to find out Lopakhin’s capitalist points of view  dealing with social class and class struggle in Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. This research focuses on the drama entitled The Cherry Orchard as primary data. The writer uses several theories in this research; they are theory of marxism, capitalism, social class, and class struggle. Moreover, library research is used as a method of  collecting the data. In addition, descriptive research is applied in order to understand and learn the conditions, habits, opinions  of  some  characters  in  Anton  Chekhov’s  The  Cherry  Orchard.  Furthermore,  the sociological approach is used to explain Lopakhin’s capitalist points of view presented in The Cherry Orchard. Abstract

The research aims to discuss the imagery dealing with the choice of life in RobertFrost’s “The Road not Taken”. The research has three purposes: (1) to describethe kinds of imagery in the poem, (2) to describe the choices of life in the poem”,and (3) to figure out how the imagery deals with the choice of life in the poem.The theories used in the research are the theory of imagery and its kinds andtheory of symbol. Next, formalistic and structural approaches are applied toanalyse the data. Further, descriptive method and library research are used tofacilitate the analysis and seek for the data in the research. Visual, organic andkinaesthetic imageries are imageries that reflect the choice of life in the poem. Inthe poem, the speaker is taking a very different way of life but sad and tragic thathe believes that it will make him stronger in life. Life is a choice. Whatever thechoice he takes, he will be ready to face obstacles that come and block him. Hissoul is really brave. He believes that to experience a beautiful life, he must passthe hardest things in his life. What burdens him today will strengthen himsomeday.

Abstract

This research focuses on translation, namely the techniques used to translateIndonesian culinary terms into English and its fidelity. Hence, it is descriptive innature. The library research is applied as the technique of data collecting.Moreover, translational equivalent method was applied as the technique of dataanalysis. The data of this research were all taken from the menu lists of tworestaurants - Desa Authentiek Indonesisch Restaurant (DAI) and RestoranKampoeng Aer (RKA). The analysis indicates that there were four techniquesapplied in the translation, namely, adaptation, description, literal translation, andborrowing. In addition, two combined techniques are also found in the data, theyare adaptation+description and borrowing+description. As a matter of fact, mostof the Indonesian culinary terms were translated using description technique.Meanwhile, the technique of borrowing was the least frequently appliedtechnique. Due to fidelity, 87 culinary terms were translated faithfully. It meansmost of the Indonesian culinary terms were translated with high level of fidelity.In this case, the terms were translated either by keeping the meaning and dynamicor by keeping the meaning only. Besides, there were 12 culinary terms translatedunfaithfully. Accordingly, only a little bit of the culinary term translations isclassified as those of low level of fidelity.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to discuss the portrait of marriage in Victorian era in Jane Austen’sPersuasion. This is a library research in which all the data and the theories are taken fromwritten form which is related to the portrait of marriage in Victorian era including internetbrowsing to support the data. The theories of marriage, and setting are applied to analyze thedata. There are two approaches used to analyze the data. The first approach is sociologicalapproach and the second approach is historical-biographical. The research proves that theportrait of marriage in Victorian era is portrayed in Jane Austen’s Persuasion through thecharacters in that novel. At that time, marriage is the way for getting social status. Women inVictorian era will find men with the large fortune to become their husband. Meanwhile,marriage for love happens rarely.

Abstract

This study discusses the use of social deixis. It focuses on the kinds and the usage of socialdeixis. This research is descriptive in nature. It was conducted through the following steps:collecting, arranging, classifying, and analyzing the data. The data were obtained from a novelwritten by Alexandre Dumas’ entitled The Count of Monte Cristo. The unit of analysis of thisresearch is all of sentences containing socialdeixis. To get the sample, this research applied totalsampling. Consequently, all of the data were analyzed one by one. To find out the kinds of socialdeixis, referential method was used. Likewise, to search the aims of usage, pragmatic equivalentmethod was applied. The data analysis shows that based on its kinds, social deixis found in thenovel includes relational social deixis (10 items) and absolute social deixis (20 items). Amongthem, absolute social deixis is more frequently used than relational social deixis. While, due to itsaims of usage, social deixis is applied to express politeness and respect (10 items), intimacy (5items), and identify authority (21 items). In this case, social deixis is mostly used to identifyauthority.

Abstract

This research is aimed to describe the metaphor dealing with human nature in thepoem “A Poison Tree”, and to reveal the metaphor constituting the human naturein the poem. This is a library research in which all the data and the theories weretaken from written forms including internet browsing. The theories used in thisstudy are the theories of figures of speech, metaphor, meaning and symbol.Moreover, structural approach, formalistic approach and psychological approachare applied to decide the strategy in analyzing the metaphor and symbols found inthe poem. The analysis shows that: (1) there are two metaphor of human natureanalyzed in this research, they are metaphor related to feeling and metaphorrelated to human characteristics. Metaphor related to characteristics is divided intotwo main discussions namely individual and social creatures. Furthermore, thereare two symbols of human nature namely anger and karma.

Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research is conducted to describe thestrategies are used by the writer to translate the joke in the book “Let’sJoke and Enrich Your Vocabulary” and also to know the quality of thetranslation assesed from Accuracy and Acceptability. This researchapplies purposive sampling since the samples are chosen anddetermined based on criteria. The result of this research showed therewere 9 translation strategies, named Shift (91 data or 72.8 %), Literaltranslation (9 data or 7.2 %), Addition (7 data or 5.6 %), Deletion (6data or 4.8%), Borrowing (5 data or 4.0%), Free translation (3 data or2.4 %), Cultural substitution (2 data or 1.6 %), Naturalization (1 datumor 0.8 %), Synonym (1 datum or 0.8 %). The accuracy assesmentshowed there were 73 data (81.1 %) considered to be accurate, 14 data(15.6 %) considered to be less accurate, 3 data (3.3 %) considered to beinaccurate. The strategies resulting from the accurate translation aredeletion, literal, borrowing, naturalization, synonym and culturaltranslation. The strategies resulting from the less accurate andinaccurate translations are addition, shift and free translation. From theacceptability assesment, there are 66 data (73,33 %) considered to beacceptable translation, 15 data (16, 67 %) considered to be lessacceptable translation, 9 data (10 %) considered as unacceptabletranslation. The strategy resulting from the high level of acceptabletranslation is addition. The strategy resulting from the unacceptabletranslation was the use of synonym.

Abstract

This research focuses on taboo terms found in Mike Lacher’s On the Bro’d. Theaims of this research are to describe the kinds of taboo terms and their usage. Thisresearch uses descriptive method which involves the following steps: collecting,classifying, and analyzing the data. Library research is used as technique of datacollecting. The population of this research is all of the terms and phrasescontaining taboo terms. The data of the research are analyzed one by one,therefore, the total sampling is applied. Referential equivalent method is used todetermine the kinds of taboo terms. Meanwhile, pragmatic equivalent method isused to analyze the purpose of using taboo terms. Due to the kinds of taboo termsfound in the novel, the taboo terms include religion taboo terms, disease, deathand killing, bodily excretion taboo terms, personal name, sexual organ, sexualactivity, gender identity, and mental illness. The mostly used taboo term in thenovel is sexual taboo term while the least is disease, death and killing. In terms ofthe purposes of their usage taboo terms are used to express anger, surprise, curseor wish harm, habitual epithets, insult, joke or humor, sex talk, and slang. Amongthem, insult is the most intended purpose which occurs in the novel; whereas,slang is the least.
