Abstract

This research is a study on cohesion and coherence of the song lyrics of JKT48 in the album Heavy Rotation. Cohesion and coherence play important roles to construct meaning unity of a discourse. Concerning this phenomenon, the research aims to describe and parse the  elements of grammatical and lexical cohesions as well as coherence between interlines and verse of song lyrics. This study is descriptive-qualitative in nature. The data are in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences taken from the album Heavy Rotation. The songs contained within the album are ten in number. The analysis shows that cohesion and coherence found in the songs are of great  variety.  The  cohesion  used  is  of  two  kinds –grammatical  and  lexical cohesions.  Grammatical cohesion includes reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. In  fact,  personal reference, phrasal and  clausal substitution, and phoneme  ellipsis  are  greater  in  use.  Substitution  is  mostly  in  the  form  of substitution using Japanese and English rather than Indonesian. Lexical cohesion comprises repetition, synonymy, and collocation. They are used  to emphasize the important lingual units, to construct equal meaning relation, and to support the theme. Coherence is used to connect the propositions of causal relation, means- product  relation, reason-cause relation, comparison relation, setting-conclusion relation, and amplification relation. Cohesion and coherence serve to connect parts of a discourse in order to achieve a discourse which is unified, relevant, and acceptable for readers.   Key words: cohesion, coherence, song discourse, song lyrics

Abstract

The article is aimed to find out and analyze the visual imagery that describes the terrible condition of the victims of the war in Wilfred Owen’s “Dulce Et Docurom Est”. Wilfred Owen is the English War Poet. The article is written in order that the readers know about the gruesome condition of the war. The primary data of the article is a poem written by the war poet, namely, Wilfred Owen. There are some theories used to analyze the data. The basic theories are imagery and setting. There are seven imageries: visual imagery, auditory imagery, olfactory imagery, gustatory imagery, tactile imagery, kinaesthetic imagery and organic imagery. The poem is analyzed by using one poetic device, that is, visual imagery. Another theory is setting. In regard with the topic, the theory of setting is important because the analysis deals with the terrible condition of World War I. Library research is used to collect the data. Every line of the poem visualizes a very terrible depiction of discomfort and lack of dignity that has been experienced by the soldiers. The most vivid image of the victim’s condition is when one of the soldiers feels shocked because of sudden gas attack. The particularly graphic nature of the speaker’s descriptions emphasizes the idea of death in war. Keywords: visual imagery, setting, victim, World War I

Abstract

The YouTube Auto-Translation (YAT) feature represents an innovation in translation technology development. This feature allows for translating songs into other languages by displaying subtitles. The present research aims to investigate the application of translation techniques in translating the song Janji Setia by Tiara Andini using the YAT feature. By analyzing the translation techniques used, it is possible to identify the tendencies in methods and ideologies of translation. The present research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a product-oriented translation approach. Data is collected through listening and note-taking techniques, then transcribed into written form. The researcher listens to the song’s version in Indonesian and records it along with its English subtitles. Data analysis involves data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings indicate that the YAT feature employs nine translation techniques in translating the lyrics of Janji Setia into English. These techniques are established equivalence, linguistic amplification, compensation, reduction, amplification, adaptation, discursive creation, and literal translation. Based on the translation techniques used, it is evident that the method and ideology of the YAT feature in translating song lyrics are oriented towards the target language with a domestication ideology. This research enriches the understanding of how translation techniques, methods, and ideologies are applied in translating song lyrics using the YAT feature.

This study aims to analyze the types and functions of code-switching found in the utterances of host and guest stars in Boy William's YouTube video entitled "Episode 1: Livy dan Vior Ribut Besar". In conducting this research, the methodology chosen is a qualitative descriptive method that analyzes the type and function of code-switching by watching the video multiple times, taking notes, and classifying the types and functions of code-switching. The theory used in this research was proposed by Poplack (1980) to analyze the different types of code-switching. While the theory proposed by Apple & Muysken (2005) is used to analyze the function of code-switching. The results showed that there were 3 types of code-switching found in the host and guest star's conversations in the video. The types of code-switching consist of tag switching, intra-sentential switching, and inter-sentential switching. All types of code-switching found amounted to 144 data with intra-sentence switching being the most dominant type with 121 data, and the least dominant type is tag switching with only 6 data.
