Abstract

Religion and belief are two inseparable elements, particularly in the context of the Indonesian archipelago. Long before the widespread dissemination of conventional religions, shaped by factors such as history, culture, politics, and other influences, these indigenous beliefs were prevalent and are often referred to as Prehistoric Religion. The communities of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), especially on Timor Island, uphold a belief in a supreme power and supernatural elements, such as the Sky God (Uis Neno) and Earth God (Uis Afu). Archaeological remnants of prehistoric artifacts on Timor Island indicate that the local belief system is characterized by dynamism and animism, as practiced by the Atoni Meto, Dawan, and Helong ethnic groups inhabiting the Timor plains. The research question addressed in this study is how the concepts of Sonaf and Uab Meto are understood and interpreted within historical and cultural contexts. Using a cultural-historical approach and historical methods including heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography, this study investigates the phenomenon of syncretism, whereby conventional religions gradually entered and blended with prehistoric belief systems. The findings reveal that communities in the interior were influenced by other groups through cultural diffusion or assimilation, resulting in the emergence of new beliefs or streams derived from multiple religious traditions. Religious inculturation, as a process of integrating religious values and practices with local wisdom, allows religion to become relevant and comprehensible to local communities. This study contributes to the field of cultural history, particularly in understanding the dynamics of social structure, political organization, and spirituality in Timorese society, while also expanding knowledge of the rich cultural diversity present in Indonesia.

Abstract

Mathematics is a discipline that trains students to think critically and reason logically when drawing conclusions about a problem. This is evident in mathematics education, which plays a crucial role—particularly in the use of ratios, percentages, and social arithmetic as tools in various aspects of human life. Understanding the concepts of comparison and proportion is vital in today’s mathematics education, as they relate to the application of ratios and percentages in various real-life situations. The concepts of ratios and proportions help students understand quantitative relationships between quantities and support their mathematical problem-solving skills. However, in practice, many students still struggle to understand the relationships between ratios, percentages, and their application in real-world contexts. One such context that can be used to integrate these concepts is the calculation of zakat using a specific percentage of assets that have reached the nisab threshold. Therefore, this study aims to develop a mathematics learning model by integrating the application of comparison and proportion concepts into zakat calculations through the use of ratios, percentages, and social arithmetic. This study employs a descriptive approach by integrating mathematical concepts into the context of Islamic economics through the resolution of contextual problems related to the nisab and zakat percentage. The results of the study indicate that applying the concepts of ratios and proportions through the context of calculating zakat not only enhances students’ understanding of ratios but also encourages them to be more active and skilled in solving everyday mathematical problems. Such a contextual approach supports more meaningful mathematics learning, as recommended in the mathematics learning standards.

Abstract

Southeast Asia is highly vulnerable to electoral disinformation. Previous studies reveal that such campaigns are often driven by actors endorsed by political parties, as observed in Indonesia and Malaysia. While this perspective is relevant, a more nuanced understanding is required to grasp the complexity of disinformation, particularly where domestic and international dimensions intersect. This research contributes to this understanding through an Indonesian case study. Notably, disinformation in previous Indonesian elections has involved international elements, such as false narratives during the 2019 presidential election alleging cooperation between the Indonesian Communist Party and China to secure Joko Widodo’s victory. Building on this precedent, this study explores the extent to which international dimensions were exploited for disinformation during the 2024 election. Employing a qualitative methodology, this research analyzes data collected from public discussions, academic journals, books, institutional reports, and news media. The article presents three layers of analysis. First, it identifies specific instances of disinformation related to international issues during the election. Second, it investigates the actors propagating this disinformation and their underlying motives. Finally, the study demonstrates the challenges inherent in combating this problem. Ultimately, this research concludes that international issues were actively exploited for disinformation during Indonesia’s 2024 election. It further underscores the need for International Relations (IR) scholarship to devote greater attention to the nexus of domestic and international spheres, and to recognize the capacity of ‘micro’ actors in spreading disinformation.
