Abstract

Film is the example of literary works which reflects the social issues that occur in a society. The writer is interested to analyze the social issue in The Blind Side. In this case, the writer intends to examine the role of sport in reducing racism that occur to an African American who lives in Tennessee, The United States of America. It also concerns his existence in the Whie American society in which its people have different skin colors. The writer uses two elements to analyze this thesis. They are intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The intrinsic aspect given in this thesis consists of two aspects, namely narrative aspect which includes character, setting, and conflict; cinematography aspect which includes shot size and sound. The writer uses racism and sport theory, where concept consists of stereotype, prejudice, dan discrimination. The Blind Side reflects the effects of racism towards an African American’s existence in the mid of the white society. His struggle makes him accepted not only by his schoolmates but also by the society. Based on the explanation above, it is revealed that racism that occurs to an African American can be annihilated by his achievement in sport, in this case, football. Abstract

This book review analyzes the strengths and weakness of David Nicholls’s One Day. One Day is a novel that tells the story about a man and woman who actually loves each other, but they never shows it up for about 20years because of their prestige feeling. This review explores the strengths and the weakness of David Nicholls’s One Day by inspecting elements namely characters, setting, and conflict. To review the novel, the writer use intrinsic theory such as characters, settings, and conflict. In addition, the writer use close reading method to analyze this novel. I choose this novel, because this novel has strengths that make it as a good reading. The strengths inside the novel are characters and conflict. In this novel each character has a different characteristic and is highly contrasted, it makes the story more exciting and not boring. On the other hand, the conflict is so strong in this novel. The way Nicholls explains the conflict could make the reader feels what exactly the character’s feel. Even having weakness, this novel is not less the value to be a good reading. One Day is recommended novel to read, because there are many interesting parts of the story that we can enjoy from this novel. Keyword: characters, setting, conflict, strengths, and weakness.

Abstract

Main purpose of this review is to encourage readers to read Looking for Alaska and to understand the motive of the protagonist of this novel. This review contains some major spoilers from this novel. Looking for Alaska tells about changes and experiences which encountered by the protagonist while seeking his Great Perhaps. The novel also conveys what it means to love and to lose someone. After reading this review, the readers could understand this novel clearly and thoroughly.

Abstract

Life of Pi is a fantasy adventure novel that is written by a Canadian authorYann Martel. There are some positive messages that are in this novel, such as how to face fear, how to fight to survive, and much more. There are three purposes of this writing: to give the summary of Life of Pi novel and biography of the author; to reviewLife of Pi’s intrinsic elements, the strengths, and the weaknesses of the book; and to review the cover analysis of the novel. The result shows that from the intrinsic elements that are analyzed in this novel, the writer concludes that those elements are the strengths of this novel. On the other hand,there are some contents of the novel that is boring and being a little weaknesses of this novel.In this study the writer analyzes the front cover of the novel from the illustration picture that is shown in the cover and the title on the cover. Besides, the writer also analyzes the back cover of the novel from the synopsis that is shown in there.In brief, this novel is good for the reader who loves reading. It is because this novel not only has interesting story but also has many positive messages that become the good lesson for the people who read it.

Abstract

“Royals” is a song that sung by a singer, Lorde. The lyrics tell about popular culture in America which usually portrayed as something luxurious and glamorous. The purpose of this study is to know the content of the song by analyzing the lyrics and music video of the song. The study uses intrinsic and extrinsic theories to analyze the data and library research to compile the data. Library research is used to get literary and materialism theories. The finding of this study is an understanding of materialism in American popular culture which reflected through the symbols and expression in the song “Royals”.

Abstract

This thesis talks about a love affair, but this affair is different from the common love affairs. This scandal is not with people out of their environment but with a step cousin. This research is based on Ethan Frome novel by Edith Wharton and the affair that happens is between Ethan Frome and Mattie Silver, the cousin of Zenobia Pierce. Zenobia Pierce is Ethan Frome’s wife. The purpose of this research is to analyze the characters in the novel with their internal and external conflicts, and to express the love affair they have. In writing this thesis, the writer applied several methods, namely library research to collect data and information related to the thesis and structural approach method to analyze the characters and conflicts, psychological approach method to analyze the love affair that happens in this novel. The result of this study shows that Ethan makes a love affair scandal and the love affair scandal does not end happily.

Abstract

“Boja Have Skate” is a skateboard community in Boja.  Boja is a district in Semarang.  The discussion of this thesis is about member’s opinion about “Boja Have Skate” community in Boja.  Boja teenagers have experienced the new culture process through skateboard. This research purposes to know about the opinion of “Boja Have Skate” community.  Ten members of “Boja Have Skate” are taken as the respondents.  The analyze and research use theory of social community and the use of cultural product. The result of the research reveals that community of “Boja Have Skate” is formed because they have the same interest and hobby to play skateboard.  At the beginning, the community only has two teenagers who like playing skateboard, they make the other teenagers interested to know and learn about the game.  Boja teenagers get the information about skateboard from internet. The community of “Boja Have Skate” chooses the skateboard because they think that the game is challenging, not mainstream, and interesting to follow.  Skateboard makes the Boja teenagers able to express their existence, get pleasure and stisfy themselves.

Abstract

In NativeSon, Wright tells that Black do not have freedom as the Whites do.It also describes Black movement to show their protest against the White policies in America.Bigger Thomas is the main character of Native Son. The conflict inside the novel is institutionalizedracism in the United States as reflected in unequal education, unequal justice, and perpetuation of stereotypes of African-American people in the various media.In the last part of the story, Bigger kills Mary Dalton accidentally. Yet, Bigger uses the political purpose as a motif to hide his crime. Although Bigger takes advantages during his unknown crime, still he is sent to death by White’s court system.

Abstract

Language is the prime communicative system for the human beings. But it is not the only way to communicate. Language plays an important role in creating and maintaining our interpersonal relation and the social rule that lies behind them. One of language features is that it is a tool for representing knowledge as the writer used in this research, for describing a meaning. There are three metafunctions in creating meaning: Ideational, interpersonal, and textual. The ideational metafunction is closely connected to the research. Since, this research deals with ideational meaning, the theory that will support this research is the Transitivity System by M.A.K Halliday.

Abstract

Bahasa Inggris adalah bahasa internasional dimana sudah tidak lagi terdengar asing di telinga kita. Bahasa Inggris sudah mulai diterapkan sedini mungkin sejak kita mulai mengenal dunia pendidikan formal. Saat ini pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris sudah mulai diperkenalkan di bangku sekolah Taman Kanak-Kanak (Kindergarten). Anak-anak umur 4-5 tahun sudah mulai mengerti apa itu Bahasa Inggris walaupun hanya beberapa kata. Mereka mulai tertarik untuk mengenal bahasa asing dalam hal ini adalah Bahasa Inggris. Mereka mulai diperkenalkan dengan mengucapkan angka-angka, huruf, warna, menyapa seseorang, dan mengucapkan salam dalam Bahasa Inggris. Para guru juga mempunyai peran yang penting dalam proses pembelajaran ini, dimana di usia sedini ini anak-anak biasanya masih ingin bermain dibandingkan dengan belajar. Tetapi dengan adanya pemilihan metode yang tepat maka proses pengenalan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris akan tercapai secara maksimal.Pemberian materi yang dilakukan secara terus menerus dan berulang-ulang akan membantu anak-anak untuk lebih mudah dalam mengingat kata-kata Bahasa Inggris yang bagi mereka masih jarang terdengar. Kata kunci : kata, second language acquisition, method of language learning, direct method.
