Abstract

Safe Haven (2010) is a novel written by Nicholas Sparks. It is a story about a woman who suffers from traumatic experience due to her abusive husband. She manages to escape to a safe place and find happiness in that place. The woman wants to start a new life even though the shadow of the past will always haunt her.

Abstract

Skripsi berjudul “The Use of Figurative Language in The Devil Wears Prada film” ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis gaya bahasa apa saja yang dipakai dalam film The Devil Wears Prada, gaya bahasa apa yang sering dipakai dalam film ini dan arti gaya bahasa berkaitan dengan situasi pada saat ujaran itu diucapkan. Teori yang digunakan yaitu prinsip kerjasama dari Grice (1975) dalam Gibbs Jr (1994). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif dan kualitatif karena skripsi ini menggambarkan suatu fenomena bahasa dan hasil analisis disampaikan dengan kata-kata. Data yang menjadi objek penelitian ini adalah DVD film The Devil Wears Prada dan transkrip film tersebut. Penulis menggunakan metode simak bebas libat cakap dan teknik catat dalam mengumpulkan data. Kemudian dalam menganalisis data, penulis menggunakan metode padan referensial dengan menggunakan purposive dan random sampling. Dalam menyajikan hasil analisis data, penulis menggunakan metode informal. Dari hasil analisis data, penulis menemukan 123 buah gaya bahasa dalam film yang terdiri dari: ironi, hiperbola, sinekdok, metafora, paradoks, oksmoron, litotes, metonimi, klimaks, eufemisme,dan pertanyaan retorik. Jenis gaya bahasa yang paling banyak dipakai adalah metonimi (33.33%) dan yang paling sedikit digunakan adalah paradoks (0.81%), oksimoron (0.81%) dan pertanyaan retorikal (0.81%). Mereka menggunakan bahasa kiasan untuk menyampaikan emosi mereka, membujuk pendengar agar menyetujui opini pembicara, menegaskan opini pembicara, menunjukan kepribadian pembicara dan membuat komunikasi lebih singkat dan komunikatif. Abstract

Penggunaan verba persepsi dalam sebuah bahasa memiliki ciri khas dan keunikannya masing-masing. Seperti dalam bahasa Jawa yang menjadi objek penelitian kali ini, terdapat banyak sekali leksikon yang menrepresentasikan sebuah verba persepsi. Namun, penggunaannya berbeda-beda sesuai dengan kolokasi maknanya. Untuk itu penelitian ini bertujuan menggambarkan struktur semantis dari tiap leksikon. Selain itu, ciri kewaktuan internal dan makna inheren tiap leksikon dapat diketahui.  Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan teknik purposive sampling untuk mengambil data dari kamus dan majalah bahasa Jawa serta intuisi dari penulis sendiri. Dalam menganalisis data penulis menggunakan metode agih, serta teknik substitution dan interruption sebagai teknik lanjutannya. Hasilnya, penulis menemukan makna asali MELIHAT, BERPIKIR, INGIN, TAHU, MENDENGAR, MELAKUKAN, dan TERJADI yang dapat digunakan untuk menjelaskan verba persepsi bahasa Jawa. Makna asali tersebut berpolisemi untuk membangun sebuah makna, seperti MELIHAT atau MENDENGAR berpolisemi dengan BERPIKIR dan TAHU, MELAKUKAN berpolisemi dengan TERJADI. Selain itu, makna inheren verba dianalisis dengan melihat kedinamisan, kepungtualan, dan ketelisan verba tersebut.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the meaning life of Bill Houston and Jamie May. In order to complete this paper, the writer used library research to collect the material. The writer uses a book written by Viktor Frankl about logotherapy to analyze the novel. Logotherapy consists of existential problems and the way to find the meaning of life. Existential problems fall into existential frustration, existential vacuum and noogenic neuroses. Projection and de-reflection are a therapy which is used to recover existential problem. The meaning of life can be found through deed, suffering and love. The result of the analysis shows that the true meaning of Bill and Jamie’s life are found after they feel some frustration, helpness, loneliness and love.

Abstract

Social relationships and roles between participants in a persuasive text such as sales letters are interesting to analyze. The writer chose sales letters collected from internet forum Warrior Forum as the research materials. The focus of the article is how the sales letter writers influence the potential customers and what social role is played among the participants in sales letter. The author uses interpersonal meaning theory in systemic functional linguistics. The writer restricts the issue only on an analysis of the mood types, social relationships between the participants and text type.The purpose of this paper is to find the structure and interpersonal meaning of the sales letters existed in the Warrior Forum. The analysis show that the interpersonal meaning in sales letter is to persuade potential buyers to purchase the product seller. Sales letter writers also use informal language and show a friendly and credible impression to the prospective buyers even though they are not familiar with each other. The analysis also show that sales letter is a spoken text.

Abstract

United States of America, which is recognized as a powerful country puts a great concern toward education. This can be seen from the way government provides free public education for its citizens. Yet, the quality is questionable. The Board of Education is the council responsible for providing good education; it is also responding to community wishes for educational betterment. In its leadership, problems appear and lead to failing public schools. This eventually brings failures to students. Such existing situation in American public schools can be seen through literary works, film is one in case. Waiting for Superman is one showing it.

Abstract

Skripsi adalah sebuah karya tulis berdasarkan penelitian yang telah dilakukan dan merupakan syarat kelulusan bagi mahasiswa. Dalam skripsi, ada abstrak yang merupakan ringkasan dari keseluruhan isi skripsi. Abstrak ditulis secara singkat dan jelas untuk mempermudah pembaca mengetahui isi skripsi tanpa harus membaca keseluruhan teks. Oleh karena itu, skripsi haruslah merupakan sebuah teks yang koheren dan mudah dipahami. Dalam skripsi ini, penulis ingin melihat peran pemarkah kohesi dalam menciptakan koherensi pada abstrak yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa Sastra Inggris. Penulis  juga mencari tahu kecenderungan penggunaan pemarkah kohesi pada data yang ada. Tujuan dilakukannya penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis pemarkah kohesi yang digunakan dalam abstrak yang ditulis oleh mahasiswa Sastra Inggris dan mencari tahu bagaimana peran pemarkah kohesi dalam membentuk koherensi hingga menciptakan teks yang efektif dan mudah dipahami. Pada skripsi ini penulis membatasi data hanya pada abstrak mahasiswa Sastra Inggris tahun 2010 dan 2011 yang ditulis dalam Bahasa Inggris. Dalam mengumpulkan data, penulis menggunakan Teknik Catat. Sedangkan untuk menganalisa, penulis menggunakan Metode Padan Referensial dan Inferensial. Penulis juga menggunakan Teknik Lesap, Teknik Sisip, dan Teknik Ganti dari Metode Agih. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa koherensi pada teks tidak selalu ditunjukkan oleh pemarkah kohesi yang eksplisit, tetapi juga implisit. Pemarkah kohesi implisit ini bisa ditentukan dari konteks yang ada dalam teks tersebut.

Abstract

Nowadays, there is a phenomena about capitalism which becomes the main system in the world. Although capitalism becomes the main system in the world, there are some criticisms to capitalism. In one viewpoint, capitalism gives much wealth to capitalist class. On the other hand, capitalism becomes the main problem that gives miserable life to working class who is oftenly exploited by capitalist class in order to get profit, as represented in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. In this thesis, the writer is interested to analyse how capitalism influences the miserable life of working class. The writer analyses a novel entitled The Jungle by Upton Sinclair as the object of research. The focus of this thesis is how capitalism becomes the main factor which causes the miserable life of working class. The main purpose of this thesis writing is to show the criticism to capitalism that gives miserable life to working class as represented in Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. In analysing the data, the writer uses library research method. In analysing intrinsic aspects of the novel, the writer uses some theories about theme, setting, character, and plot. While in analysing the extrinsic aspects of the novel, the writer uses some theories about capitalism, Marxist Literary Criticism, and alienation. The result of the research shows that there are a lot of criticisms to capitalism because capitalism becomes the main factor that gives miserable life to working class. In The Jungle, capitalism gives influence to social aspects of human life that lead the miserable life of Jugis and his family as the representation of working class. Capitalists class also exploits and treats working class badly. Moreover, there is a phenomena about alienation which estranges Jurgis and his family from humanitarian values as the effect of capitalism. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that capitalism fails in giving prosperity to working class, even capitalism becomes the main factor that gives miserable life to working class.

Abstract

Human is essentially a social being. They cannot live alone, in other words, a human needs other humans. They socialize with each other, establish strong relationship and produce a harmonious society. Social humans are naturally able to communicate well with the surrounding environment as well as humans are influenced by the environment itself. Therefore, as a social being, humans are united in a society to respect other humans with various backgrounds.
