Abstract

This study aimed to describe the condition of the reproductive organs of Aceh cattle after artificial insemination (AI) and identify the causes of fertilization failure using transrectal ultrasonography. The study involved six Aceh cattle. Ultrasonographic examinations were conducted on days 25 and 35 post-AI to observe endometrial thickness, corpus luteum (CL) presence, and embryos. The results showed that two cows (cows 1 and 2) were detected as pregnant, indicated by the presence of embryonic vesicles and CL on both observation days. One cow (cow 3) showed an embryonic vesicle and CL on day 25, but these were no longer observed on day 35, suggesting early embryonic mortality. The remaining three cows (cows 4, 5, and 6) were not detected to be pregnant. The average CL size in pregnant cow 1 was 1.20±0.00 cm on day 25 and 1.30±0.00 cm on day 35, which was larger than that of pregnant cow 2 (0.90±0.14 cm and 1.00±0.00 cm, respectively). The average endometrial diameter in pregnant cow 1 was also greater (2.25±0.14 cm and 4.20±0.21 cm) than that in pregnant cow 2 (1.10±0.28 cm and 1.95±0.56 cm) and the non-pregnant cow (1.15±0.05 cm and 2.45±0.26 cm). In conclusion, CL size and endometrial thickness differed between pregnant and non-pregnant Aceh cows. Fertilization failure in Aceh cattle may be associated with early embryonic death, endometritis, ovarian cysts, and factors related to reproductive management.

Abstract

The high presence of nematode worms in cattle has a significant impact on productivity, reducing production value throughout the year, economic losses, meat sufficiency, and endangering food security as a source of animal protein. The increasing prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes is influenced by environmental ecological conditions and maintenance management. This study was conducted in North Aceh Regency (lowlands <100 masl) and Gayo Lues Regency (highlands >800 masl), from September to October 2025. The samples used were cow feces, categorized by age group and sex, through the interaction of the physical environment (topography, temperature, humidity, rainfall, and soil pH). The sample size for each region was 90 cows. The identification of gastrointestinal nematode eggs in cow feces was carried out at the Mathematics and Natural Sciences Laboratory of Almuslim University. The prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle was higher in the lowlands than in the highlands, showing a significant difference (P<0.01). The frequency of gastrointestinal nematodes based on the sex of cattle in the lowlands was significantly (P<0.05) and highlands did not differ significantly (P>0.05). Furthermore, the presence of gastrointestinal nematodes in cattle is related to environmental factors. Topography, temperature, and humidity significantly influenced the two regions (P<0.01), with a higher prevalence in the lowlands. It can be concluded that environmental factors vary significantly across regions, significantly influencing the increase in gastrointestinal nematode infestation in cattle in the region. The future context for cattle farming and disease management, particularly regarding the presence of helminth parasites, requires appropriate and sustainable models.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dietary supplementation with lemon basil leaf powder (Ocimum basilicum L.), commonly known as selasih, on the production performance of laying quails. A total of 200 six-week-old female quails were used in a five-week feeding trial consisting of four dietary treatments with five replicates. The treatments consisted of T0 (commercial diet without lemon basil leaf powder), T1 (commercial diet with 1.5% lemon basil leaf powder), T2 (commercial diet with 3.0% lemon basil leaf powder), and T3 (commercial diet with 4.5% lemon basil leaf powder). The observed parameters included feed intake, egg production, egg mass, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and mortality. The experiment was arranged using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD), and the data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that dietary supplementation with lemon basil leaf powder up to 4.5% had no significant effect (P>0.05) on feed intake, egg production, egg mass, or FCR of laying quails. Feed intake ranged from 24.22 to 24.68 g quail⁻¹ day⁻¹, egg production ranged from 65.03% to 70.35%, egg mass ranged from 10374.78 to 11123.70 g, and FCR ranged from 2.18 to 2.31. No mortality was observed during the experimental period across all treatments. These findings indicate that lemon basil leaf powder can be safely included in the diet of laying quails, as indicated by the absence of mortality and no adverse effects on feed intake, egg production, egg mass, and FCR.

Abstract

The use of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) in poultry feed has been shown to improve production efficiency; however, their use has been restricted because of concerns regarding antimicrobial resistance. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of biosynthesized zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) using Mindi leaf extract (Melia azedarach) through nanoparticle characterization and antimicrobial activity assessment. ZnNPs were synthesized by mixing 70 mL of a 1 mM zinc nitrate hexahydrate solution with 30 mL of mindi leaf extract. Characterization using a Particle Size Analyzer showed an average particle size of 380.8 nm, polydispersity index (PDI) of 0.572, intercept value of 0.927, and zeta potential of −23.7 mV, indicating moderate dispersion stability. Antimicrobial activity was evaluated against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Lactobacillus sp. using the disk diffusion method. ZnNPs at a concentration of 1000 ppm produced inhibition zone diameters of 18.47 mm and 17.23 mm against E. coli and S. typhimurium, respectively (P<0.01). These inhibition zones approached those of tetracycline (45 ppm) under the tested conditions, whereas no inhibitory effect was observed against Lactobacillus sp. The observed antibacterial activity may be associated with nanoparticle–cell membrane interactions, Zn²⁺ ion release, and the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), as reported previously. These findings indicate that the biosynthesized ZnNPs exhibit selective antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria. However, further in vivo studies are required to confirm their efficacy and safety before considering their application as alternatives to AGPs in poultry production.

Abstract

Dimsum is a popular snack in Indonesia and is widely available in Banda Aceh. However, it has a limited shelf-life. This study was conducted in three stages. In the first stage, the primary objective was to determine the shelf life of raw and steamed broiler chicken Dimsum made with chayote, referred to as CCD, when stored at different temperatures (ambient, chilled, and frozen). The study observed pH values, moisture content, total plate counts (TPC), and total counts of Salmonella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus. The study indicated that raw CCD lasts for one hour at room temperature, whereas steamed CCD lasts for only 4-8 hours. Both types of CCD can be stored for 1-2 days in chilled storage and 1-2 weeks in frozen storage. Steamed CCD meets Indonesian quality standards for chicken nuggets (SNI 6683:2014). The CCD is also high in protein (17.38%), fiber (4.54%), and antioxidants (12.65%). In the second stage, a comparative study was conducted between CCD and Dimsum from three different outlets in Banda Aceh. The results showed that CCD had the highest fiber content among the samples tested. The final stage of this research aimed to identify modern markets for sourcing broiler chicken meat as a raw material for CCD production. The results suggest that the M1 modern market is suitable for purchasing chicken broilers for use as a raw ingredient for Dimsum.
