Abstract. Supiandi MI, Leliavia, Syafruddin D, Utami YE, Sekunda R. 2019. Plant fruits used as food by the Dayak community of Tamambaloh in Labian Ira’ang Village, Kapuas Hulu District, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1827-1832. The Dayak Tamambaloh community has a long tradition of using plants as source of food. However, this knowledge of using the plants as food has not been scientifically documented. The objectives of this study were to identify the species of plants, especially fruit yielding plants, that which were used as food, and to document the methods of their processing practiced by Dayak Tamambaloh community. This study was conducted through the literature survey, interviews and field surveys in Labian Ira’ang Village, Kapuas Hulu District, Indonesia. The results of this study showed that Dayak Tamambaloh community in Labian Ira’ang Village use fruits of as many as 60 species of plants for edible purposes. They belonged to 29 plant families. The families with the highest percentage of fruit yielding plants were Moraceae (10%) and Cucurbitaceae (10%). The food plants were mainly obtained from forests (58.33%), gardens (16.67%), house yards (15%), river banks (5%) and hills (5%).

Abstract. Damiri N, Mulawarman, Effendi RS. 2019. Antagonism of Pseudomonas fluorescens from plant roots to Rigidoporus lignosus pathogen of rubber white roots in vitro. Biodiversitas 20: 1549-1554. Indonesia's rubber productivity is still relatively low. This low productivity of rubber can be caused by many factors such as the attack of Rigidoporus lignosus. This study aims to explore antagonistic bacteria from the plant roots and test their antagonism ability to R. lignosus at the laboratory level. This research was conducted at the Laboratory at the Faculty of Agriculture, Sriwijaya University, Indralaya Ogan Ilir District, South Sumatra, Indonesia. Corporate and bacterial isolations are carried out by serial dilution method. In-vitro testing of antagonistic bacteria was carried out using the dual-culture technique method on sterile PDA media by direct opposition between R. lignosus culture and antagonistic bacteria explored. Results of the study showed that a number of bacterial isolates existed there, namely 11 bacterial isolates belonging to Pseudomonas fluorescens, four from turmeric roots, three from the roots of rubber seedlings, two from galangal roots and two from the roots of yielding rubber plants. P. fluorescens from roots of turmeric, rubber seedlings, rubber, and galangal was able and had the potential to be developed as biopesticide to control R. lignosus. The best isolate in suppressing the growth and development of R. ligonosus is P. fluorescens isolates from the roots of turmeric and those of rubber seedlings (isolates of C, B, and G).

Abstract. Rambey R, Susilowati A, Anna N. 2019. Genetic diversity of mindi (Melia azedarach) from community forest in Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, Indonesia revealed by microsatellite marker. Biodiversitas 20: 1708-1712. Melia azedarach or locally known as mindi is fast growing and one of important tree species for community forests especially in West Java and North Sumatra, Indonesia. High demand for its wood must be accompanied by increased productivity through planting of high-quality seed. There is still lack of information about genetic diversity of mindi from different seed source in North Sumatra. Therefore, our research was conducted to determine genetic diversity of mindi from different seed source in North Sumatra through microsatellites marker. Leaf samples originated from three populations Percut Sei Tuan, Pancur Batu and Biru-Biru were used in this study. The SSR markers were from Azadirachta indica i.e. Ai5, Ai 11, Ai 13, Ai 14 and Ai 34. Molecular data were analyzed using Popgene and NTsys version 2.0. The result showed that number of alleles (na) ranging from 1.80 to 2.80, and percentage of polymorphic loci (PPL) ranging from 60 to 80 %. The level of genetic diversity showed that mindi in North Sumatra has moderate value (He: 0.244 to 0.269). It indicated that assessment of genetic diversity of M. azedarach North Sumatra is necessary for improvement and conservation of a species.

Abstract. Trisnawati I, Muryono M, Desmawati I. 2019. The impact of herbivorous insect on leaves of mangrove species Rhizophora stylosa and its relation to leaf nutrient level. Biodiversitas 20: 1409-1415. Intertidal mangrove ecosystem is a very unique ecosystem which is under threat due to anthropogenic disturbances like land conversion to promote paddy cultivation and aquaculture and pollution. Increased nutrient loading from human activities is expected to have stronger responses to both mangroves and their associated herbivores. This research is aimed to investigate vulnerability of mangroves caused by herbivory of herbivorous insects, focusing on the diversity and abundance of herbivorous insects, the level of mangrove leaf damage and its relation to nutrient levels within leaves in term of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and water content. We observed mangrove habitats located around Institut Teknologi Sepuluh November (ITS) Campus in Surabaya, East Java dominated by Rhizophora vegetation. Herbivorous insects showed individual abundance of 15.15% of the total insects found in mangroves around the studied areas. The area of relative leaf damage in Rhizophora stylosa leaves tended to be high in sapling habitus (11.96-24.56%) compared to tree habitus (6.97-16.71%). One way ANOVA showed non-significant difference in leaf area damaged between sapling and tree habitus (F = 0.099, p-0.75), and percentage of herbivory between saplings and trees (F = 0.0007, p-0.98). Concentrations of potassium (K) was significantly higher in tree than sapling habitus, whereas leaf nutrient phosporous was significantly higher in sapling than tree habitus. Other leaf nutrients (total nitrogen and water) were relatively the same in both habitus. However, saplings contained more feeding deterrent tannins than trees. Leaf age is thought to be related to higher leaf palatability and insect herbivore nutrition in younger leaves, represented by sapling habitus.

Abstract. Saifudin, Salamah A. 2019. Phenotypic plasticity in the ovarium of crested flower of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Biodiversitas 20: 1241-1247. Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. or known as Kembang Sepatu in Indonesia has a variety that is very diverse for the shape of flowers, sizes, and colors. Variations of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. flowers not only can be observed among its hybrids but also in one hybrid. The hybrid is known as a crested flower (double type I), one of four categories of H. rosa-sinensis flower shapes in nature. This study aims to know the variation of the crested flower through morphological and anatomical observations of its ovaries. The morphological observation was carried out by observing ovarian outer surface under the Dino-Lite microscope. An anatomical observation was done by observing the longitudinal section (l-s) of fresh ovarian samples under a light microscope with 4x magnification. Morphological observation of 200 samples showed three types of external structure of ovaries: non-twisted ovary, twisted ovary, and ovary with its wall forming a structure like a petal. Anatomical observation of 137 samples showed three types of ovaries: normal ovary, ovary with its internal undergo a change or a reduction, and ovary with a formation of pistillum-like structure. Variations that occur indicate plasticity phenomenon in crested flowers. Further research is needed to find out the main factors causing variations in crested flower ovaries.

Plastic degradation by Coriolopsis byrsina, an identified white-rot, soil-borne mangrove fungal isolate from Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 867-871. The work deals with an important environmental issue, the disposal of plastic waste. The degradation of plastic by white-rot fungi of soil-borne mangrove isolate, T1P2, from Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia, was investigated using Minimal Salt Medium and the ability of the degradation was indicated as the amount of degradation efficiency. Analysis of the 18S rDNA sequence successfully identified the ligninolitic fungal isolated, T1P2, as Coriolopsis byrsina. The results have been revealed that C. byrsina have more potential to degrade plastic with maximum % DE was 22,7% for six weeks compared with the enzymatic plastic degradation reached 6,3% for two days. However, this study needs to do further investigation of extracellular enzyme that involved in degradation process.

Assessment of reclamation success of former limestone quarries in Tuban, Indonesia, based on soil arthropod diversity and soil organic carbon content. Biodiversitas 20: 1743-1747. The reclamation for sustainable ecosystem in mined land, including revegetation, is an obligatory program stipulated by the Indonesian government. This study evaluated the ecological improvement of revegetated land at the reclamation sub-areas (RSAs) of former limestone quarries in Tuban, East Java, Indonesia. The RSAs were coded as RSA 2010, RSA 2014, and RSA 2016 which represented the initial year of revegetation as well as the reclamation soil-material, namely the rejected soil-products, topsoil, and spoils, respectively. Soil insects were collected from ten sampling plots at each RSA using pitfall traps. The data of arthropods were analyzed to describe the community structure by determining the Shannon Diversity Index (H’), Simpson’s index (D), Sorensen's similarity and Shannon evenness index (E). The soil organic carbon (SOC) content from the soil composites was analyzed according to the Walkley and Black method. The results showed that SOC value at RSA 2010 (1.851±0.38%) was higher than that at SRA 2014 (1.694±0.29%) and SRA 2016 (0.947±0.10%). There were 18 families found from eight orders of soil insects (Coleoptera, Diplura, Diptera, Entognatha, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera, and Orthoptera) and one order from terrestrial crustacea i.e., Isopoda, family Tylidae. The ecological indices of RSA 2014 (H’=1.15; D=0.47; E=0.61) and RSA 2016 (H’=1,19; D=0.47; E=0.57) were higher than those of RSA 2010 (H’=0,61; D=0.71; E=0.43). The Pearson analysis indicated moderate negative correlation (r=0.55) between soil arthropod diversity index and SOC. The diversity of soil arthropods at reclaimed area indicated that the reclamation was successful. Based on the study, we recommend that reclamation is done using mine spoil or topsoil rather than rejected soil products.

Abstract. Pazyuk IM, Fominykh TS. 2019. The evaluation of potato virus Y transfer by some beneficial bugs (Hemiptera: Heteroptera). Biodiversitas 20: 1222-1227.  The predatory bugs Podisus maculiventris, Orius majusculus, Nesidiocoris tenuis, and Macrolophus pygmaeus were commonly used for control of pests in potato meristem culture in greenhouses. In this study, the risk of transmission of potato virus Y (PVY) by entomophagous bugs was estimated in cage experiments. It has been shown that none of the bugs tested was capable of transmitting the PVY. However, N. tenuis and M. pygmaeus have been shown to damage potato seedlings in the absence of animal food (pests or factitious food). The bug N. tenuis caused severer damage to potato plants than did the bug M. pygmaeus. Therefore, we can recommend only P. maculiventris and O. majusculus for pest control in potato meristem culture in greenhouses.

Exploration culturable bacterial symbionts of sponges from Ternate Islands, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 776-782. Multidrug resistance, (MDR) bacteria seriously threaten human health which causes a more difficult and extends the treatment period, and increases the risk of death. Sponges-associated bacteria, a well known for their rich in chemical classes and bioactivities, are the prolific producers of bioactive compounds. In order to search new sources of antibacterial compounds, we collected a total of 55 sponges from Ternate Island that provided 324 bacterial isolates. The data showed that sponges-isolates ratio in the anthropogenic area was relatively higher than the other collection sites. The isolates were screened for the antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae-RSDK, K. pneumoniae-UI, Pseudomonas aeruginosa A-UI, P. aeruginosa B-UI, Staphylococcus aureus-UI, MRSA-UI, MRPA-UI, Bacillus subtilis-RSDK, B. subtilis-UI, Salmonella typhi-UI, and MDR E. coli. The isolates were able to inhibit 0-7 the pathogenic bacteria on 24 h and 48 h. The most active bacteria were identified as B. clausii, V. chiguensis, B. tropicus, P. marcusii, B. tropicus, V. parahaemolyticus, B. paramycoides, and V. dokdonensis. In conclusion, the sponges in the anthropogenic affected area have higher bacterial symbionts than that of in the pristine area. In this study, the results of isolation of the symbiont bacteria from sponge samples were obtained and morphologically observed for these bacterial isolates. The number of bacteria that were isolated were 133 bacterial isolates and ten isolates including producing active secondary metabolites

Abstract

Abstract. Bachtiar I, Hadi TA. 2019. Differential impacts of 2016 coral bleaching on coral reef benthic communities at Sekotong Bay, Lombok Barat, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 570-575. Coral bleaching has been a major causal factor of coral mortality worldwide in the last two decades and it is therefore threaten food security. Understanding post-bleaching recovery is therefore very crucial to formulate strategy in promoting natural coral reef recovery. The present study documented coral reef communities both in pre- and post-bleaching event in early 2016. The results show that coral bleaching variably reduced coral and soft-coral covers. Sponge and other fauna cover considerably fluctuated. Since the individual number of soft-coral, sponge and other fauna were small, there is likely no big impact of coral bleaching. Among 12 study sites, 11 sites showed significant reduction of coral cover but one site showed only little fluctuation. Overall mean reduction of coral cover was about 18%. Consequently, algal cover increased by about 24%. The present study revealed differential coral bleaching impact between outer- and inner- reefs. At outer reefs, coral community suffered more severe mass coral mortality than those at inner reefs. This disparity is likely owing to initial coral cover and species composition of the coral communities. In the second year, there is still no visible coral recruitment from larvae. Cascade effects of land-clearing and overfishing due to increasing tourism development is very likely to be additional major stress that pause post-bleaching coral reef recovery at Sekotong Bay, Lombok Island, Indonesia.
