Biodiversitas 20: 532-536. Burgo chicken is the result of a crossbreed of Red Junglefowl (Gallus gallus gallus) with Kampung chicken (Gallus domestica). This study aimed to describe the diversity of colors found in male Burgo chickens. The study was conducted in the city of Bengkulu, Indonesia. The method used in this study was a direct observation of the 50 male chickens on the breeders. The breeders belonging to the Burgo chicken community were determined by random sampling method. The breeders who did not join the community were determined by the snowball sampling method. This method was carried out because the presence of breeders who keep Burgo chickens was unknown. The data in this study consisted of the color of chest feathers, neck feathers, wing feathers, tail feathers, saddle feathers, and the number of wing and tail feathers. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively. The number of colors ranges 4 to 11 with the high diversity is mainly found on the feathers of the chest, neck and, saddle.

Abstract. Widiana A, Ukit, Thahirah A, Paijiah E. 2019. Diversity of endophytic fungi in cajuput leaf waste (Melaleuca cajuputi). Biodiversitas 20: 562-569. Cajuput Oil Factory at Jatimunggul, Indramayu of Forest Management Unit of Perum Perhutani (State Forest Enterprises) produces cajuput leaf waste during distillation process. This waste is difficult to decompose due to the presence of lignin in the secondary cell wall. Therefore, fungi are needed to produce some enzymes for speeding up the degrading process. This research was aimed at finding out the diversity of fungi growing in the cajuput (Melaleuca cajuputi Powell) leaf waste of zero, two and four months old. The result indicated that a total of 14 species of fungi belonging to four genera namely Aspergillus, Arthrinium, Rhizopus, and one unidentified genus are produced by cajuput leaf waste. Ten different types of endophytic fungi were isolated from two-month-old waste, seven Rhizopus and types of fungi were found in the zero-month-old waste, and only five types of isolates are found in the four-month-old waste. Three species of isolated fungi were also tested for their cellulase enzyme activity.

Short Communication: Evaluation of water quality and survival rate of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by using rice-fish culture system in quarry land of clay. Biodiversitas 20: 589-594. Quarry land is an area that has been used as mining land and has different characteristics from the former conditions before being mined so that the level of productivity of the soil decreases. This study aims to determine the suitability of clay quarry land in Tuban as a cultivation medium based on the analysis of the water quality and survival rate of red tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) using rice-fish culture system. This study used a completely randomized experimental design method with triplicate of three ratio of cultivation medium using Ex-mining Land Soil (EmLS) from quarry land and Top Soil, i.e., 1:0 (A), 1:1 (B), and 0:1 (C/Control). Results of water quality measurements that include nitrite, nitrate, temperature, pH, and dissolved oxygen in descriptive unreal influence showed good condition. However, ammonia gives a significantly different effect mainly on the survival rate in 30 days nurture. In the end, the ANOVA test result of tilapia survival in treatment A was not significantly different (P>0.05) with treatment B and control. Based on these data, it can be seen that the EmLS from the quarry land of clay and TS can be used as a medium for cultivation of red tilapia (O. niloticus) with the recommended ratio of 1:1.

Abstract. Ertuev MM, Semenov UA. 2019. Some behavior features of a female Panthera pardus tulliana during pregnancy and at first parturitions. Biodiversitas 20: 1333-1338. The present paper reports the results of the behavioral study of a female Panthera pardus tulliana during pregnancy, and before, during and after parturitions. The study was conducted in the Center of leopard recovery in the Caucasus, located in the mountain zone of the Sochi National Park, Russia. The behavior of Panthera was observed using surveillance cameras. During pregnancy, there is a significant shift in the level and ratio of hormones in the female's body. These internal changes can cause reorganization of the brain divisions which participate in the formation of the behavioral reaction, including female's behavior. We have shown that significant changes occur in the manifestation of individual behavior forms along with the increase of the pregnancy age and the intensification of fetal growth: a decrease in the level of anxiety and fear, and an increase in feed intake. At the end of pregnancy, the frequency of sleep and rest periods increases, but they are short-term. Before parturition, a female experiences painful sensations due to increase motor activity of the fetus, accumulation of toxins, possible hypoxia.

Biodiversitas 20: 732-737.  Andaliman (Zanthoxylum acanthopodium) is an important species in North Sumatra, Indonesia either from conservation, economy, or socio-cultural point of views. Z. acanthopodium is known as plant species difficult to cultivate and its natural distribution in Indonesia is restricted to Aceh and North Sumatra, Indonesia. This study aims to identify the modest characteristics of Z. acanthopodium’s habitat in natural and cultivated areas and to assess the importance of light in these two habitat types in North Sumatra. We surveyed four districts in North Sumatra and used specific leaf area (SLA) as proxy for the importance of light in Z. acanthopodium habitat. We found that the species grow naturally in high slope areas and not in a plain area. Similarly, in cultivated areas, this species grows well in sloped area with minimum inundated surface run-off water. Z. acanthopodium with higher SLA values occurs in natural habitat and high slope areas while those with smaller SLA are found in cultivated areas and low slope although the difference is statistically not significant. This study indicates the importance of light and surface run-off for suitable habitat of Z. acanthopodium. Further studies are needed to examine the quality, intensity, and frequency of light to support Z. acanthopodium growth; and to examine the role of landscape inclination and their position relative to sun exposure (i.e. aspect) for its survival and growth rate.

Abstract

Abstract: Lagenaria siceraria (Molina) Standley belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family. Its nutritious tender shoots, fruits, and seeds are widely consumed in rural communities as leafy vegetables. However, studies on variation and heritability of its agronomic traits are lacking. This study aimed to characterise variability and heritability among L. siceraria genotypes with various fruit and seed morphology from different origins. Seedling, vegetative and reproductive traits were compared among landraces. Landraces varied significantly in their seedling, vegetative and reproductive traits. Significant positive correlations were mainly recorded among reproductive traits. The first five informative principal components had a total variability of 74.393%. Biplot and dendrogram grouped landraces mainly according to fruit and seed morphology and then their origin. In a biplot, Cluster-I grouped landraces with pear-shaped (KSP, RSP, RRP) and curvilinear-shaped (NqRC) fruits. Cluster-II mainly associated landraces with smooth and curvilinear-shaped fruits (KSC, NqSC, NSRC, NSC, MSC and DSI) from different origins. Cluster- III associated landraces with rough textured fruits from the same origin (NRB and NRC). High heritability estimate was recorded among fruit and seed traits. This was the first comprehensive variability and heritability study in the country and therefore it formed basis for available L. siceraria germplasm essential for future breeding programs.

Abstract. Subositi D, Wahyono S. 2019. Study of the genus Curcuma in Indonesia used as traditional herbal medicines. Biodiversitas 20: 1356-1361. Research into local knowledge is very important in providing a database of medicinal plants and as a basis for further research. The genus Curcuma (Zingiberaceae) has been used as medicines and other purposes, so it has a high economic value.  The aim of this study was to record the use of the species of the genus Curcuma as traditional herbal medicines in Indonesia. The study was a part of a project called RISTOJA (Research on Medicinal Plants and Traditional Herbal Medicines), which collected data from 415 ethnic groups in Indonesia from 2012 to 2017. A purposive sampling method was used to select 2,354 respondents (traditional healers) for interviews, 1,042 of whom used Curcuma as herbal medicines. It was found that eight species of the genus were used to treat 73 different ailments. Curcuma longa was found to have the highest relative frequency of citation (0.274) and use value (0.563), and members of the genus Curcuma were found to be extensively used to treat a wide variety of ailments in Indonesia.

Characterization of Indonesian pigmented rice (Oryza sativa) based on morphology and Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms. Biodiversitas 20: 1208-1214. Indonesia has many cultivars of pigmented rice, but many variants have not been characterized using morphological characters and molecular markers. SNPs (Single Nucleotide polymorphisms) have been used in previous studies to identify the Indica and Japonica subspecies. Characterization of whether a line belongs to the Indica or Japonica subspecies is useful information for rice breeders, especially to generate line exhibiting the strong hybrid vigor. Morphological characters are used to determine the relationship between cultivars using cluster analysis. The SNP markers were amplified by PCR, sequenced and compared with sequences in the GenBank. Based on morphological characters, ten cultivars divide into two clusters. SNPs distinguish Indica and Japonica subspecies, and show that Hitam Lampung, Aek Sibundong, Melik, Hitam Toraja, Merah Kalimantan, and Merah Sumbawa belong to the Indica subspecies while Cempo Ireng and Pare Eja belong to Japonica. Abang Segreng and Hitam Toraja could not be clearly assigned to either the Indica or Japonica subspecies.

Sexual dimorphism in morphometric characters of Mystus singaringan from Klawing River in Central Java, Indonesia: Strategic instruction for conservation development. Biodiversitas 20: 1133-1139. This study aims to determine the sexual dimorphism of Mystus singaringan (Senggaringan fish) based on morphometric characters. The measurement of 24 morphometric characters in 30 M. singaringan from Klawing River was carried out using a digital caliper (0.01 mm). Morphometric data of M. singaringan analyzed using t-test have showed significant difference in 12 morphometric characters between sexes, such as standard length, head height, distance of the tip of the muzzle to eyes, distance of the tip of the muzzle to adipose fin, height of dorsal fin, height of pectoral fin, basic length of adipose fin, height of adipose fin, maximum height, length of first nasal barbel, length of first mandibular barbel, and length of second mandibular barbel. Analysis of growth of morphometric characters shows that there is a linear relationship between all morphometric characters and total length. The type of growth of all morphometric characters in both male and female M. singaringan is negative allometric.

Abstract

Abstract. On the basis of long-term data (2007-2018), the fauna of robber flies (Asilidae) of the Republic of Mordovia was studied. Taking into account our own and literary data, 35 species of robber flies from 18 genera were noted. Of them, 19 species were noticed in the Republic of Mordovia for the first time. We presented the photos of morphological traits of Choerades fuliginosa (Panzer, [1798]), Choerades gilva (Linnaeus, 1758), Choerades ignea (Meigen, 1820), Laphria gibbosa (Linnaeus, 1758), Andrenosoma albibarbe (Meigen, 1820), Andrenosoma atra (Linnaeus, 1758), Didysmachus picipes (Meigen, 1820), Dysmachus stylifer (Loew, 1854), Pamponerus germanicus (Linnaeus, 1758), Philonicus albiceps (Meigen, 1820), Machimus gonatistes (Zeller,1840), Neoitamus cothurnatus (Meigen,1820), Neoitamus cyanurus (Loew, 1849), Dioctria atricapilla Meigen, 1804, Leptogaster cylindrica (De Geer, 1776).
