Abstract. Karkour L, Fenni M, Ramla D, Gaad D, Benbelkacem A. 2019. Evaluation of agronomic performances of rainfed barley double-haploids (DHs) lines under semi-arid conditions. Biodiversitas 20: 1398-1408. Sixty-six doubled-haploid (DHs) barley lines derived from F2 plants of three bi-parental single crosses, between the local variety (Tichdrett) and three introduced genotypes (Express, Plaisant, and Exito) were evaluated in 2017 for agronomic performance. The experiment was undertaken at two locations under rainfed conditions in semi-arid zone of Algeria in a randomized block design with three replications. Each line was scored for fifteen quantitative traits: number of days to heading, thousand grains weight, number of grains per spike, spikes number per m2, plant height, spike length, leaf relative water content, awn length, peduncle length, spike weight, grain weight per spike, leaf area, specific leaf weight, grain yield and harvest index. The results indicated that the presence of highly significant genotype effect for all traits except for leaf area and highly significant environment effect for all characters, except spikes number per m2and awns length. Genotype x environment interaction was highly significant for all traits, except specific leaf weight and leaf area. Significant positive correlation between the twelve agronomic traits, ranging from 0.45 to 0.87, were observed among the number of grains per spike, thousand grains weight, the number of spikes per m2, yield of grains and harvest index. The principal component analysis showed that four components could describe 72% of total variances. Cluster analysis divided all genotypes studied into three cluster groups. Overall, results of agronomic parameters and those related to the biotic and abiotic stresses will be used for better identifying this germplasm and better-directing studies of genetic improvement.

Hydrolytic enzymes-producing ability of species of actinomycetes and bacteria associated with wilted banana plants (Musa sp.). Biodiversitas 20: 1147-1153. Banana plants contain many nutrients that enable microbes to grow and attack them, causing wilting disease. Microbes growing on the stumps and soil around banana plants are believed to have the ability to produce hydrolytic enzymes. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of actinomycetes and bacteria isolated from the stumps and soil of wilted banana plants in producing hydrolytic enzymes, namely cellulase, inulinase, amylase, and protease. The confirmation tests of hydrolytic enzymes-producing ability were conducted by inoculating the microbes into media containing CMC, inulin, starch, and skim milk, using the method of paper disc diffusion. From the subculture results, there were 18 isolates of actinomycetes which have been identified as Nocardia, Actinobiospora, Nocardiopsis, Streptomyces, Streptoverticillium, Streptosporangium, and Microbiospora, as well as 40 bacterial isolates with 9 genera of bacteria, namely Xanthomonas, Erwinia, Pesudomonas, Proteus, Ralstonia, Escherichia, Staphylococcus, Caulobacter, and Neisseria, were found. As many as 8 actinomycetes and 40 bacterial isolates indicated the ability to degrade amylum, 39 bacterial and 18 actinomycetes isolates could degrade cellulose, 34 bacterial and 13 actinomycetes isolates could degrade inulin. The highest cellulase ratio was shown by Nocardia sp. LBKURCC101 (3.43) and Ralstonia sp. LBKURCC112 (3.90). The actinomycetes isolate of Nocardia sp. LBKURCC104 and bacteria Pseudomonas sp. LBKURCC133 gave the highest inulinase ratio of 3.36 and 3.47 respectively. In selective amylase media, the highest ratio of 3.10 and 3.80 was found in actinomycetes Nocardia sp. LBKURCC104 and bacteria Erwinia sp. LBKURCC125.

Biodiversitas 20: 1688-1692. Mangrove is one of ecosystems located in estuary and shallow coastal waters and its existence has a significant role for life. The aim of this study was to identify species composition and density of mangrove forest in Kedawang village, Nguling Sub-district, Pasuruan District, East Java, Indonesia. Survey method using belt transects was carried at three sampling points. Results of this study showed that mangrove vegetation in Kedawang includes five species from three families, namely Avicenniaceae (Avicennia alba and Avicennia marina), Rhizophoraceae (Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora mucronata), and Sonneratiace (Sonneratia alba). At sampling point 1, A. alba dominated with a density of 37 individuals/ha at tree level, 380 individuals/ha at pole level and 3100 individuals/ha at stake level. At sampling point 2, the tree level was dominated by A. alba with 142 individuals/ha, while R. mucronata dominated the pole and stake level with 1300 and 1467individuals/ha, respectively. At sampling point 3, the pole and stake level was dominated by A. alba with 167 and 933 individuals/ha respectively, while A. marina dominated the sapling level with 800 individuals/ha. At all stations, the density at stake level is greater than that tree level. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out conservation efforts in the form of protection combined with restoration by enrichment planting at all study locations to increase the diversity and density of mangrove vegetation.

Abstract. Poedjirahajoe E, Sulityorini IS, Komara LL. 2019. Short Communication: Species diversity of mangrove in Kutai National Park, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 3641-3646. Kutai National Park (KNP) in East Kalimantan, Indonesia is blessed with natural mangrove forests. However, there is only very little information relating to the species composition and mangrove diversity. Therefore, this study was conducted to assess the mangrove tree species diversity and richness in Kutai National Park, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The study results showed that the mangrove trees density was 1,214 trees/ha in the line transect vegetation survey with 1.7 ha plot. The number of mangrove species in KNP was 17 from 6 families. The dominant species with large numbers of individuals were Rhizophora mucronata, Rhizophora apiculata, and Bruguiera sexangula. The diversity index was low in mangroves in Pandan Bay Estuary, and Kaba Bay compared to that in Lombok bay’s mangroves.

Abstract. Sungkawati M, Hidayati L, Daryono BS, Purnomo. 2019. Phenetic analysis of Curcuma spp. in Yogyakarta, Indonesia based on morphological and anatomical characters. Biodiversitas 20: 2340-2347. Curcuma spp., also known as ginger (Zingiberaceae), has economic value in traditional medicine. However, its many morphological variations cause difficulties in identification and classification. Therefore, observation of its morphological and anatomical characteristics, and of the phenetic relationships between Curcuma species, is important. This research aims to determine the specific characteristics of Curcuma spp. and to examine its phenetic relationships based on morphological and anatomical characteristics. The research was conducted in July 2018-February 2019 in the Bantul, Gunungkidul, Sleman and Karanganyar regions. Observation of the anatomical characteristics was conducted on the leaves and rhizomes and the data analyzed according to descriptive and quantitative/numerical methods. Clustering analysis with the Gower General Similarity Coefficient and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was performed to determine the role of each character in groupings. The results of the research found seven species from 23 OTUs observed (C. aeruginosa, C. domestica, C. manga and C. xanthorrhiza, each with four OTUs; C. soloensis and C. zedoaria, with three OTUs each; and C. heyneana with one OTU) and showed that specific morphological characteristics were found in the flesh color rhizome, pseudostem color and midrib color. Specific anatomical characteristics were evident in the secretion cell color and the presence of trichomes on the leaves and rhizomes. The dendrogram shows a 0.70 phenon line consisting of two groups, group A (C. soloensis and C. domestica) fused in a 0.760 similarity index, and group B (C. aeruginosa, C. mangga, C. heyneana, C. soloensis, C. xanthorrhiza and C. zedoaria) fused in a 0.654 similarity index, which means that C. soloensis and C. domestica have a close phenetic relationship. The 0.80 phenon line consisted of five groups: C. domestica, C. soloensis, C. xanthorrhiza, C. zedoaria-C. mangga-C. heyneana and C. aeruginosa.

Genetic diversity in the growth of white jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba) provenance-progeny test: Comparing study in the nursery and field. Biodiversitas 20: 1325-1332. Results of the provenance-progeny test in seedling and field test of white jabon (Neolamarckia cadamba) at Parung Panjang, Bogor District, West Java Province, Indonesia are reported and discussed. Twelve provenances representing 105 families were tested in nursery and field using randomized complete block design. Seedling height, root collar diameter, sturdiness quotient, shoot dry weight, root dry weight and shoot-root ratio was measured at four months, while as the growth assessment was carried out on survival, height and stem diameter at the age of 2 and 4 years. The result showed that genetic variation was found to be higher among families within provenances than the variation among provenances for all parameters indicating the family effect had the highest contribution on the growth and survival. Based on family and provenance mean, most of the seedling parameters were significantly correlated with the others, but most of seedling parameters were not significantly correlated with plant growth at 2 and 4 years. The longitudinal cline was significantly correlated with shoot dry weight, root dry weight, and shoot-root ratio indicated that the white jabon seeding parameters in natural populations may have greater in humid (higher precipitation) than in drier locations. This was likely to suggest that the family or provenance selections based on seedling growth in the nursery may not be very effective because heritability of most growth variables is likely to be low.

Diversity of duckweed (Araceae-Lemnoideae), morphological characteristics and its potentials as food sources for herbivorous fishes in West Java, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 20: 1617-1623. Duckweed is aquatic plant potential as a source of protein to feed herbivorous fish. The purpose of this study was to explore the diversity of duckweed species occurred in several areas in West Java. The exploration was done by collecting duckweed (Araceae) from water bodies such as lakes and ponds located in the fishery center in Garut, Bandung, Sumedang and Tasikmalaya Districts. The sample was identified using stereomicroscope to know the morphological characteristic. Characteristics being observed included root tip and sheath as well as the morphological frond characteristics. The result of study showed there were three species of duckweed recorded at the studied areas in West Java, namely Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleid, Lemna perpusilla Torr. and Lemna gibba L. The three duckweed species can be distinguished based on its morphological characteristics, such as the number of roots, types of root tip, root sheath, symmetric-frond, gibbous-frond, and nerve-frond. In the studied areas, duckweed plants were found in ponds, stagnant water, and rice fields. Duckweeds can be used as a source of protein in fish feed as they have high protein content and complete amino acids.

Biodiversitas 20: 3413-3421. A study that aims to determine the diversity, relationship and fatty acid content in several coconut genotypes (Cocos nucifera L.) grown and cultivated in Asahan District of North Sumatra Province, Indonesia was investigated. The coconut was obtained from the Air Joman and Silau Laut subdistricts of Asahan District, between April and September 2017. This study used morphological observation method based on IPGRI (International Plant Genetic Resources Institute) coconut descriptor with purposive sampling technique. A total of 36 coconut genotypes have been collected and identified based on morphological characters and fatty acid content. Based on the morphological character, the genotype of G28 and G32 show the closest relationship with the dissimilarity value of 3.00 and the farthest relationship on the genotype of G40 and G43 with the dissimilarity value of 12.04. Based on the 10 main type fatty acids found in coconut oil, all genotypes have between 8 and 10 types of fatty acids, i.e. caprylic, capric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic and arachidic acid in the oil. The average amount of fatty acid contained in coconut oil obtained generally in other coconut oil. Genotype of G5 has the highest content of lauric acid and has 12.1 mm thick flesh, but only 8 types of fatty acid composition are present in the oil.

Biodiversitas 20: 1794-1801. A forest ecosystem is the basic ecological unit that exists as a habitat for a community of both native and introduced organisms. It is the limited number of reliable information on the diversity and community structure of tree species in one of the Philippines’ protected landscape, Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP), that initiates this study. The present study was carried out to determine species diversity and community structure including seedlings, saplings and large trees of two forest types, namely tropical lowland evergreen rainforest and tropical lower montane rainforest. Two one-kilometer transects were established in each forest types. Each transect was divided into five sampling points. A total of 67 tree species belonging to 29 families were identified from both forest types. Species richness was higher in tropical lowland evergreen rainforest compared to tropical lower montane rainforest. Relative abundance showed that among the identified families, Dipterocarpaceae and Moraceae have the highest abundance which is mostly present in the two forest types. This was followed by Meliaceae and Myrtaceae. The two forest types were satisfactory at community level having large number of seedlings compared to saplings and trees. Based on this, the two forest types, dominated by seedlings, are actively regenerating.

Abstract. Ndlangamandla VV, Ntuli NR. 2019. Variation on growth and yield traits among selected Phaseolus vulgaris landraces in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Biodiversitas 20: 1597-1605. Phaseolus vulgaris L. (common bean) of American origin is grown worldwide for edible leaves, immature pods and dry seeds. This is the first comprehensive study conducted on variation among P. vulgaris landraces in South Africa. This study aimed to characterize variability in morpho-agronomic traits of P. vulgaris landraces. Twenty landraces were planted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Variations in germination percentage as well as in stem, leaf, pod and seed traits were determined. Significant variations were recorded in all vegetative and reproductive traits except germination percentage and seed thickness. Vegetative traits correlated positively with each other, whereas reproductive traits correlated positively with both traits. Positive association of almost all traits with first and second components in a principal component analysis and biplot indicated them as potential discriminatory traits for landraces. The biplot and dendrogram associated landraces mainly according to their seed colour as well as growth and yield traits. This study revealed the potential vegetative and reproductive traits that can be used to select vigorously growing and high-yielding P. vulgaris landraces for future large-scale farming and breeding in South Africa. These traits could potentially result in desired plants with big stems, many branches, and numerous and broad leaves with high chlorophyll content, which will yield many, long and wide pods as well as many and heavy seeds. The taller landraces (D-50M50LB-Cl, D-50P50C-Cl, E-100YG-Cl, E-25YG-Cu, E-50M50LB-Cu, E-50B50C-Cl and E-50DB50C-Cl) from KwaZulu-Natal show good potential for future large-scale farming and breeding for vigorous growth as well as high pod and seed yield.
