Abstract. Joshi R. 2015. Impact of Gujjar Rehabilitation Programme on the group size of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Rajaji National Park, North-West India. Biodiversitas 16: 188-195. A comparative study has been done to assess the impact of the Gujjar Rehabilitation Programme on the group’s size of Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Rajaji National Park, north-west India. Field surveys were carried out before the Gujjar’s rehabilitation during 1999-2001 and after the Gujjar’s rehabilitation during 2006-2008 in Chilla and Haridwar forest ranges of the park. A total of 833 groups of elephants were sighted, varying from 2-5 (mean value ±SD =28.5 ± 24.7) to 21-25 animals (mean value±SD=8.2±4.6). The number of groups sighted in Haridwar forest after the Gujjars’ rehabilitation were significantly low in summer and winter as compared before the Gujjars’ rehabilitation. However, the number of groups sighted in Chilla forest before and after the Gujjars’ rehabilitation in both the seasons was found to be same. Results indicated that elephant’s group’s size and movement was shrinking/reducing in Haridwar forest, however, in Chilla forest it was found to be slightly expanding/ increasing. The impact of Gujjar Rehabilitation Programme has not brought any drastic change in restoring the larger population of elephants and in increasing their group’s size, however, this has increased the frequent movement and activities of elephants within their home range. Restoration of large fragmented forest stretches/corridors for elephant’s migration and habitat management are of paramount importance in providing elephants a wider way to move across entire landscape in large herds. As increase in human population in the nearby areas and developmental activities, with increase in vehicle traffic pressure on national highways and railway track existing across the park were found to be creating negative impacts on the overall movement of large groups of the elephants.

Mirzaei L, Mehregan I, Nejadsatari T, Assadi M. 2015. Phylogeny analysis of Colutea L. (Fabaceae) from Iran based on ITS sequence data. Biodiversitas 16: 168-172. This study was carried out on the species of Colutea L. that growing in Iran. Some of thesespecies are native to Iran. Internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences were obtained from 12 samples representing seven species ofColutea recognized by recent taxonomic treatments from Iran and we used 20 ITS sequences from GenBank to test the phylogeny ofColutea. Phylogenetic analyses were conducted using Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood methods. Our results of cladisticanalysis of phylogenetic relationships among Coluteae tribes showed its monophyletic origin and Astragaleae was its sister group. Inaddition, C. cilicica was a sister group to C. gifana whose separated of other Colutea genus from Iran. Bayesian inference and maximumparsimony analyses confirmed the monophyly of three sections of Colutea in Iran. Our results showed that further investigationincluding application of larger number of markers and involving all the Iranian Colutea species will be more effective in estimation therelationships of the genus.

Widhiono I. 2015. Diversity of butterflies in four different forest types in Mount Slamet, Central Java, Indonesia.Biodiversitas 16: 196-204. The study was carried out in four different habitat types (secondary forest, plantation forest, agroforest, andtourist area) on the southern slope of Mount Slamet, Baturaden Forest, Central Java, Indonesia from July 2009 to August 2010. A totalof 99 species belonging to eight families showed a dominance of Nymphalidae (30 species) followed by Pieridae (17 species),Lycaenidae (15 species), Papilionidae (13 species), Satyridae (11 species), Danaidae (6 species), Amathusidae (4 species), andRiodinidae (3 species). From the 99 butterflies species found on the southern slope of Mount Slamet, 32 species (30%) were specific tothe forest, whereas 63 species (60.6%) were common to all habitats sampled, and the last 10 species (9.4%) were endemics species withone protected species (Troides helena). The present results was showed that butterflies diversity, abundance, and endemism is stillrelatively high, representing 18% of all butterfly species found in Java and supporting 71.4% endemic species found in Central Java.The plantation forest were contributed the highest diversity and abundance of butterfly species, whereas the agroforest showed thelowest diversity, abundance, and endemism. Among all habitats surveyed, the secondary forest represented the most suitable habitat forbiodiversity conservation and maintenance of rare and endemic species.

Bayesian and Multivariate Analyses of combined molecular andmorphological data in Linum austriacum (Linaceae) populations: Evidence for infraspecific taxonomic groups. Biodiversitas 16: 179-187. Plant specimens of Linum austriacum (Linaceae) were collected from 16 geographical populations of nine provinces in Iran andused for morphological and molecular (ISSR) analyses. Different multivariate and Bayesian methods were used to studyinterpopulations differences. Analysis of variance test and Principal coordinate analysis plots indicated morphological difference of thepopulations. Mantel test revealed positive significant correlation between morphological and geographical distance of these populations.Pearson, coefficient of correlation showed significant correlations between basal leaf length, width and length/width ratio with latitudeand altitude of the studied populations. Bayesian analysis of combined molecular and morphological features revealed divergence of thestudied populations and consensus tree showed separation of 6 populations in different clusters. Canonical Variate Analysis plot of thesepopulations showed that Sang Sefid and Salmas populations differed greatly from the other populations. New ecotypes are suggested forthese populations.

Singh ShB, Mishra BP, Tripathi SK. 2015. Recovery of plant diversity and soil nutrients during stand development insubtropical forests of Mizoram, Northeast India. Biodiversitas 16: 205-212. The present study assessed the recovery of tree speciesdiversity and soil nutrient dynamics with stand development in subtropical semi-evergreen forest of Mizoram. The study was carried outin two regenerating forest stands following disturbance and one undisturbed forest. Schima wallichii was the dominant species in allstands showing IVI of 63.8, 83.3 and 75.9 in undisturbed, moderately disturbed and highly disturbed stands, respectively. Castanopsistribuloides was co-dominant species in the undisturbed and the moderately disturbed but this species was replaced by Sterculia villosa inthe highly disturbed stand. The shift in position of species and families from undisturbed to highly disturbed stands could be linked withdegree of disturbance. Log-normal dominance-distribution curves in the undisturbed and moderately disturbed stand indicating thestability of community, while short hooked curve in the highly disturbed stand indicates unstable nature of the community. The soilproperties (organic C, total nitrogen, and available phosphorus) increased significantly during the course of stand development, whereas,decrease with the depth in these forest stands.

Jamili, Yanti NA, Susilowati PE. 2016. Diversity and the role of yeast in spontaneous cocoa bean fermentation from Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 17: 90-95. Yeast is one of the microbial group which is role in the process of cocoa spontaneously fermentation. The objective of this study was to determinate and to know the diversity of yeast that role on cocoa bean fermentation. Yeast was isolated by pour plate method from cocoa bean that was naturally fermented by a cocoa farmer in Kolaka District, Southeast Sulawesi using yeast mannitol agar (YMA) media. Yeast was characterized and identified using phenotypic characters based on numeric-phenetic analysis. Yeast isolates applied to cocoa bean to determine its role in cocoa bean fermentation. The result was obtained seven isolates the dominant yeast during cocoa bean fermentation in Kolaka District, Southeast Sulawesi. The result of numerical-phenetic analysis based on phenotypic characters to seven yeast isolates showed that 1 isolates (Klk1) identical with Candida krusei. Three isolates (Klk4, Klk5 and Klk7) identical with Candida tropicalis, one isolate (Klk2) identical with Saccharomycopsis fibuligera, one isolate (Klk3) identical with Kloeckera sp. and one isolate (Klk6) identical with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The result also showed that fermentation of cocoa with seeding of yeast inoculums served to increase the quality of cocoa beans than spontaneous fermentation. Therefore, the seven yeast isolates potentially be used as an inoculum to improve the cocoa quality.

Astiani D. 2016. Tropical peatland tree-species diversity altered by forest degradation. Biodiversitas 17: 102-109. Indonesianexperienced relatively high deforestation and degradation. The forests degradation could bring the forests into a temporary or might bepermanent destruction not only in forest vegetation density and structure, but also in species composition. A study had been carried outto examined the impact of peatland forests degradation on their species diversity composition in Ketapang, West Kalimantan peatlandforest. Stratified random sampling was used to distinguished forest degradation class (low, intermediate and high degradation levels)  based on the differences in spectra image and confirmed with field checking by measuring forest canopy opening to measure thedegradation levels. Six to twelve of a 20x100m plots were established to sample tree structure and composition distributed alongpeatland landscape. All trees species diameter >5cm was registered an species identified. Results indicated that tree diversity wassignificantly reduce due to forest degradation, in low, intermediate, and high degraded forest were 82, 72, and 48 consecutively. Forestdegradation is not only resulted more than 50% of important species loss in high degraded peatland forest but also reducing ~40% treeabundance. Ten species were found in high degraded forest, e.g., Calophylum inophyllum, Cyathocalyx biovulatus, Neoscortechiniakingii, and Eugenia cerina, were not present in low degraded one. The species composition and abundance shifting due to forestdegradation should be considered on peatland forest management to hinder permanent species loss.

The success of the restoration of the tailings ex-gold mining through the succession is highly dependent on the ability of plants to grow and adapt to the troubled land. Restoration through natural succession takes a very long time. Therefore, human intervention is required to accelerate the succession. The purpose of this research was to improve the effectiveness of mitigation of mercury contamination through the acceleration of vegetation succession. This research has been carried out in a greenhouse using an experiment with a completely randomized design. There are 8 treatment consists of four indigenous species (Dillenia excelsa, Melastoma affine, Cinnamomum porrectum and Casuarina junghuhniana) grown alone (one species) and collective (more than one species) in the tailing media with a mercury content of 20 ppm. The results showed that the planting collectively have a mutually supportive interaction, so that increased the plant growth. In addition, collective planting two or four different species of plants, and the D. excelsa itself could decrease the concentration of mercury in the tailing. The acceleration of vegetation succession through the right choice of plants species and planting collectively, capable to increasing the potential of mitigation of mercury contamination in the tailings.

utomo, van Etten E, Wahab L. 2016. Proof of Acacia nilotica stand expansion in Bekol Savanna, Baluran National Park,East Java, Indonesia through remote sensing and field observations. Biodiversitas 17: 96-101. One of woody species that is known toinhabit certain savanna ecosystems is Acacia nilotica. The Acacia nilotica tree is widespread in the northern savannah regions, and itsrange extends from Mali to Sudan and Egypt. Acacia nilotica was first introduced to Java Island in 1850. It then spread to Bali, EastNusa Tenggara, Timor and Papua. Found in grasslands, savanna is reported as important colonizer at Baluran National Park in East Javaand Wasur National Park Papua. We conducted Vegetation analysis in three areas of the Baluran Savanna namely: Grazed, burned andunburnt. Our observation result analysis showed that in terms of the three most important tree species in all of the sites that we sampled (grazed, burnt and unburnt savannas) Acacia nilotica appeared in each of these sites. The values however, vary between sites. Acacia nilotica Importance Value Index is highest in the unburnt savanna, with IVI reaching almost 250. The unburnt site is actually a burnt site but with moderate age or time since fire (approximately 6-7 years), whereas the burnt site is savanna with relatively young age/time since fire (few months to 1 year). We also conducted GIS analysis using Satellite Images (October 2013 and October 2014) to pick up changes in Bekol savanna. Result showed that expansion of A. nilotica stand occurred towards the savanna. Over dominance of the woody species A. nilotica could shift the savanna into another ecosystem state, i.e. secondary forest.

Yulianti, Sudrajat DJ. 2016. Morphological responses, sensitivity and tolerance indices of four tropical trees species todrought and waterlogging. Biodiversitas 17: 110-115. Indonesia’s climate model predicts an increase in threat of drought andwaterlogging in several areas. However, knowledge on variations between tropical forest tree species, i.e. Anthocephalus macrophyllus,Anthocephalus cadamba, Fagraea fragrans, and Magnolia champaca to drought and waterlogging stress are still limited, though theyare relevant to future development of forest ecosystem. The objective of this research is to investigate the adaptability of four potentialtree species to drought and waterlogging stress in a controlled greenhouse. The results showed that the adaptive responses of fourtropical tree species were different, according to the results, all species were more tolerant to waterlogging than to drought stress, whichcan be observed from morphological, seedling survival, stress tolerant and stress sensitivity indices. The waterlogging resistant in fourspecies followed the order of: A. cadamba > F. fragrans > A. macrophyllus, and > M. champaca, while for the drought resistant speciesfollowed the order: A. macrophyllus > A. cadamba > F. fragrans and > M. champaca.
