Abstract

The objectives of this research were to determine the chemical components and the peroxide values of three Aglaia species (A. argentea Blume, A. silvestria (M. Roemer) Merr and A. tomentosa Teijsm & Binn). Phytochemical screening was done by Cuiley method, while peroxide values were determined by iodometri-titration on methanol, hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts. The result of phytochemical screening indicated that all of Aglaia species tested (three species) contained sterol and triterpenoids, base alkaloid, reduction sugar, and anthrasenoid while other components present only in one or two species of Aglaia. Peroxide values of the testedextracts were higher than that of vitamin E (40.996 mili-equivalent/1000 g samples) as a standard reductor, except the peroxide value of chloroform extract of A. tomentosa (41.078 milli-equivalent/ 1000 g sample). It can be concluded that A. tomentosa chloroform extract might had similar ability with vitamin E in preventing or delaying oxidation process. Abstract

Teak and pines are the largest tree forests in Central of Java so that they are very potential to be developed as an argoforestry system. The average Relative Irradiation Fraction (RIF)’s in the teak and pines trees are 50% and 14% respectively. Meanwhile, soybean is sunloving crop potentially to be cultivated in the agroforestry system. The aim of the research was to study the response of the soybean (Glyicine soya) varieties to the tree canopy pruning. The experiment was conducted at teak and pines forest area (vertisol and ultisol soil type respectively) arranged in split plot design. The main plot factor was pruning (no pruning and pruning) and the sub plot factor was variety (Wilis, Pangrango and Brawijaya). The teak and pines canopy pruning (50% lower part of canopy) increases the incident irradiation among the trees by 70%-89% or equal to 600-1000 μ mol m-2 s-1 and 80% or 840 μ mol m-2 s-1 respectively. The increase in the irradiation among the trees enhances the photosynthetic rate of soybean. The response of the soybean to the enhancing irradiation is higher in specific leaf area (SLA). Biomass production and seed yield of the soybean increases due to the canopy pruning. The seed yield of soybean increase respectively from 0.12 to 0.57 tons ha-1 and from 0.78 to 1.74 tons ha-1 in no pruning and pruning teak and pines agroforest. Abstract

Twice field works to Wawonii Island was carried out in 2003 and 2004, in order to collect data on utilization of medicinal plants by local people. Two villages of Wawonii, which occupied by Wawonii tribe, were selected as study sites. Based on the study of 73 plants species, which uses by local people as traditional medicine and after having child were recorded. Similar to order inland areas of Indonesia, forest clearances and process of modernization was also occurred in this study area. Consequence the effect of those activities expected will beaffect in lost of local knowledge and destruction of natural resources. Abstract

The research was aimed at revealing the chlorophyll content, leaf area (the plant characters), and the corm production of taro as catch crop under the young rubber stand. This research was conducted by means of Nested Design with nine replication. The intercropping planting used independent variables i.e. N0 (open condition), N1 (under the two-year-old young rubber), and N2 (under the three-year-old young rubber). The dependent variables were the chlorophyll content, leaf area, and production of the taro corm. The parameters investigated were the leaves area, the chlorophyll a and b content, the weight of fresh corm, the weight of dry corm, and the corm production per plots. The research result showed that the leaves area, and the chlorophyll a and b content significantly increased, while the weight of fresh corm, and the weight of dry corm significantly decreased (P<0.05). The fresh corm production per plots under the young rubber two- and threeyear- old were significantly decreased compared the control (P<0.05). Abstract

Study of the effects of various media on growth of ebony (Diospyros celebica Bakh) seedlings through seeds multiplication was carried out. The experiment used various media i.e. sands, soil (latosol), compost and EM Bokashi. The study was arranged by Factorial Randomized Block Design with 4 replications, growth parameters were observed i.e. growth percentage, plant height, total leaves, total roots and rootslength. The results showed that the best medium of all parameter observed was EM Bokashi and the low results showed by latosol soil medium. Statistically all of parameter observed showed significant level at 5% Duncans’ tested to various media. Abstract

Mahkota dewa (Phaleria macrocarpa (Scheff.) Boerl.) is very popular recently because it is presumed as traditional medicine which can conquer various diseases, but research on the plant is still difficult to find. Although mahkota dewa is very popular as medicinal plants, it is very poisonous, especially if it is directly consumed which can cause swollen, sprue, numb at tongue, fever, even unconscious. A research was conducted to find out effect of sub chronic dosage of butanol extract of maturated mahkota dewa fruit. Observation was carried out on kidney tissue which is susceptible to chemicals entering body. Dosage of butanol extract of 0; 42.5; 85 and 170 mg/kg body weight was administered intra peritoneal to mice. The result showed that butanol extract of maturated mahkota dewa fruit with dosage until 85 mg/kg body weight did not affect kidney tissue. Abstract

Anti-arthritic effects of Musa paradisiaca sapientum L. and Aloe vera L. on the index responses of arthritic were investigated using adjuvant-induced arthritic rats. M. paradisiaca sapientum and A. vera pulp were blended into juice then the juices were administered orally on 17-30th day. To evaluate anti-arthritic effect of the juice, an arthritic rat model was developed using Complete Freund Adjuvant on 1-16th day. In addition, the research was divided into groups (n=5) including normal control groups, positive control groups, negative control groups, 3 groups were treated by M. paradisiaca juice at 50, 100, 200 mg/kgBW doses and the other groups were treated by A. vera juices at 1, 2 and 4 mg/kgBW doses. The indexes of arthritic were determined on 17th and 31st days then analyzed using ANOVA test and t test (p<0.05). The result showed that the indexes of arthritic rats were evidently decreased by either M. sapientum or A. vera juice. Moreover, indexes of arthritic to be closely restored to the normal levels through M. paradisiaca treatment at 50 mg/kg BW dose. Abstract

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) is an important tropical crop species used for human consumption, feed and raw material for various industries. Genetic transformation through embryogenic tissues is known as an effective method for cassava genetic improvements. Objective of this study was to obtain a suitable medium and length of explants to induce embryogenic callus on friable embryogenic callus (FEC) as a target for genetic transformation. Immature leaf lobes (1-3 mm, 3-5 mm and larger than 5 mm in length) of local genotypes of cassava (Adira 4. Menti, Iding, Gebang, Rawi and Timtim-29) cultured in vitro were used as explants. The explants were incubated for 2 and 4 weeks on MS (Murashige-Skoog) or GD (Greshooff & Doy) semi solid medium containing 10 mg/L picloram, 6 mg/L NAA supplemented with 4% sucrose and 4 μM CuSO4. Results showed that the highest percentage (100%) of embryogenic calli formation for 4 weeks obtained by culturing Iding of 3-5 mm length on GD semi solid medium, whereas the lowest (33%) one obtained by incubation 5 mmleaf lobe of Timtim-29 on the same medium. The most suitable medium for callus induction was GD, whereas the optimum length of explants was 5 mm or larger. Abstract

A study on seed germination and seedling growth of ramin (Gonystylus bancanus Miq.) was conducted at a green house, Treub Laboratory, Botany Department, Research Center for Biology- LIPI, Bogor. This study was to know the effect of growth media on the germination and growth of ramin. A Completely Randomized Designed with 13 treatments and 4 replications was used in this study. Thirteen compositions of growth media used were soil, compost, cocopeat, mixture of soil and compost (1:1; 1:3), soil, compost and cocopeat (1:1:1); soil, compost, cocopeat and goat manure (1:1:1:1); soil and cocopeat (1:1; 1:2; 1:3); compost and cocopeat (1:1; 1:2; 1:3); compost and husk of rice. The result showed that the highest germination percentage was 95% obtained on the cocopeat media, while on control (soil) was 55%. The highest germination value was 6.67 obtained from the mixture media of soil+compost = 1:3 and the lowest was 1.87 from the control. There was variation of leaf shape observed until 60 days after planting. Some compositions of suggested media for seed germination andseedling growth of ramin were cocopeat, mixture of compost+cocopeat (1:1; 1:2 and 1:3), compost and the mixture of soi+compost (1:2 and 1:3) respectively.
