Abstract

One element of the biodiversity richness at Papua is its mammal especially marsupials. According to Petocz, (1987) there are 154 mammal species in Papua. One of them is cuscus. Menzies (1991) stated that 11 cuscus species exist in New Guinea, five species occur in Papua. Menzies (1991) also mentioned that the habitat, distribution and behavior of each species is not fully known yet and one strategy to answer the above mentioned questions is by conducting an explorative study of cuscus in several areas of Papua. This research to know species of cuscus in Taman Wisata Gunung Meja Manokwari using a descriptive method and observation technique. The result indicated that there was two species of cuscus in this area namely timor cuscus (Phalanger orientalis) and common spotted cuscus (Spilocuscus maculatus). Abstract

Monitor lizard (Varanidae) has dispersed widely in Indonesia, even in Papua. Papua contents of six species. It’s distribution, abundance, both in land and island have been known yet, even carrying capacity of feeding relative limited. However, species extinction rates in nature were increasing both in it. This research was done in Papaya Island in Teluk Cenderawasih National Park, Nabire, Papua since 24th -25th October 2005. Descriptive method was done to answer this study. This research resulted that in Papaya island contents only one species that is Varanus indicus. The V. indicus chosen same habitat in southern part of Papaya island. This species dispersed on 0-4 m above sea level, humidity about 78.6%, and temperature about 23.90C. Vegetation was dominated by coconut (Cocos nucifera), bitangur (Calophyllum inophyllum) and tikar (Pandanus sp.), papaya (Carica papaya, and ketapang (Terminalia catappa). V. indicus chosen Megapodius reinwadt nest as nesting area. Population of V. indicus was estimated as much 36.3 ≈ 36 pieces by King Method. The nest of V. indicus placed in Cassuarina sp. tree where cutting down. The diet of V. indicus was found such as megapods, sea birds, lizard (sauria), butterflies and bats (Macrochyroptera). Abstract

This research is to know feeding location for three species herons that lived in Pulau Dua Nature Reserve (CAPD), Serang, Banten Province. This research has been done at feeding area for the herons around Pulau Dua Nature Reserve. The data were taken from film shooting use Focal Observation Methods, while the film shooting analysed use Scan Sampling Methods. Result showed that Casmerodius albus and Egretta garzetta were using the mudflat, fisheries and rice-fields around CAPD as feeding location. Bubulcus ibis was using ricefield and grassland as feeding location. The preference for C. albus to feeding in mudflat was (χ²=21691,29; db=2, α=0,01). E. garzetta have preference for feeding in fisheries (χ²=18221,27; db=2, α=0,01) and the preference for B. ibis to feeding in grassland is (χ²=27,57; db=1, α=0,01). The selections of feeding location for three species herons were depend on the specific preys for them. Abstract

Tambra (Tor tambroides Blkr.) is consumed fish; its exotic size, rare population and expensive price but not yet cultured. The aims of study are to know biological aspects tambra fish, i.e: sexual maturity, fecundity, sexual dimorfism, sex ratio, food habits, parasities and dissease. The results were recorded two levels of sexual maturity that III and IV, fecundity ranges 3,125-8,201 eggs, sex ratio 1:2; sexual dimorfism based on shape and color body, tubercle at cheek and operculum of male, also papilla shape; food habits as omnivorous; founded two species of parasities, i.e. Argulus sp. and Lernea cypriniaceae. © 2006 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: tambra fish, biology aspects, domestication, exotic, rare and expensive

Abstract

A research about the toxicity of poison from spider Nephila sp. unto larvae of Aëdes aegypti L. had been done. The objectives of this research were to get the information about the toxicity of poison from spider Nephila sp. into larvae A. aegypti. The experiment method of this research was using Randomized Complete Block Design. This experiment used all of four instars of A. aegypti larvae. The experiment of each instar had been done with six treatments of the lethal concentration from spiders poison. Those six treatments were 1%, 10%, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100%. Each treatment had four replications. The result of this research showed that poison from spider Nephila sp. is toxic unto the larvae of A. aegypti. The average of lethal concentration for the first instar is 13.11%, for the second instar is 28.16%, for the third instar is 41.46% and for the fourth instar is 63.09%. © 2006 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: toxicity, lethal concentration (LC50), spider Nephila sp. and larvae of Aëdes aegypti L.

Abstract

Siregar HM. 2016. Four new varieties of Begonia from interspecific hybridization Begonia natunaensis C.W.Lin & C.I.Peng × Begonia puspitae Ardi. Biodiversitas 17: 776-782. Increased phenotypic diversity of ornamental plants (e.g. Begonia) can often be achieved by hybridization and selection in the F1 generation. This study aimed to produce new F1 varieties which it was hoped would display improved phenotypic characteristics compared to the contributing parents. The study was conducted in the green house of Bogor Botanic Gardens. Two native species of Indonesia, Begonia natunaensis C.W.Lin & C.I.Peng and B. puspitae Ardi, were used as parent plants. The mature F1 seeds were sown and selections were made among the plants produced. The result of the selection were four new accessions of F1 plants (X1, X3, X10, X22). The selected F1 plants were then propagated vegetatively with leaf cuttings. These were named, described and registered at the Center for Plant Variety Protection (PPVTPP). This resulted in the registration of the following F1 cultivars: X1 named Begonia Blirik which is registered as No. 347/PVHP/2015 and is characterized by purplish peltate leaves with bright whitish green veins, and white flowers; X3 named Begonia Fiandani, registered as No. 348/PVHP/2015 and characterized by dark green leaf color, corrugated leaf surface, and pink flowers; X10 named Begonia Green Peltate, registered as No. 345/PVHP/2015 and characterized by large green peltate leaves, and red flowers; and X22 named Begonia Natunapangean, registered as No. 346/PVHP/2015, and characterized by eccentrically shaped, green basifixed leaves, with ovate shape, and cordate leaf base. Thus the new varieties have been registered in PPVTPP, in accordance with legislation in force. These new varieties are beautiful ornamental Begonia hybrids with exotic leaves, which will be developed as commercial ornamental plants. Kanti A, Sudiana IM. 2016. Comparison of Neurospora crassa and Neurospora sitophila for phytase production at various fermentation temperatures. Biodiversitas 17: 769-775. There is general consensus that the presence of phytate in poultry negatively influences protein in and energy utilization by poultry, and these influences would be mitigated by augmentation of hydrolytic enzymes. The objective of this study was to evaluate phytase production by Neurospora crassa and Neurospora sitophila on solid state fermentation. The isolates were isolated from oncom Bogor. Phytase production ability was first determined on submerge fermentation (SmF) using glucose as the main C-sources, and on solid state fermentation (SSF) on media containing maize 30%, soybean 30%, and rice brand 40% w/w. Maximum enzyme activities were observed at 96 h incubation. SSF produce higher phytase than SmF. Optimum temperature for phytase production was 35°C. Highest phytase production by Neurospora crassa was 45.25 Unit per g substrate, while 40.78 Unit per g substrate was produced by Neurospora sitophila. Peptone and yeast extract were good N-sources for both isolates. Starch supplement increased phytase activity. Increased amylase activity was also observed when starch supplement was added on SSF. This study proves that Neurospora crassa and Neurospora sitophila can be used to produce phytase for better poultry nutrition. Abstract

Burahol (Stelechocarpus burahol (Blume) Hook & Thomson) is one of fruit tree that originally was founded in Indonesia. Traditionally burahol is used as natural deodorance, but due to low economic value, the cultivation program of this plant species is almost abandoned. Regarding to this situation, currently this plant species could be categorized as one of endangered species. At present, economic value of this fruit is almost neglected and this is the main reason why not many people interested to cultivate this plant. In order to change the people opinion on this plant and to improve it economic value, study on the chemical content of this plant had been carried out. From the research work, it was founded that burahol fruit have a significant content of anti-oxidative compound. From the anti-oxidative analysis using DPPH (1,1-diphinil pycril hidrazil) method, the lowest IC50 was showed by n-buthanol extract of flower (22.44 ppm) and ethyl acetate extract of fruit (29.12 ppm). Flower part also showed low IC50 of ethyl acetate extract (35.07 ppm). One of the reclamation activities in the tailings area of ex community gold mine is revegetation. The success of revegetation is strongly influenced by the selection of suitable plant species. The purpose of this research was to determine the prospects of indigenous plant species for revegetation in the tailings area of ex community gold mine. Research has been conducted at the tailings area of ex community gold mining in Menjalin subdistricts Landak District West Kalimantan, using an experiment method with randomized complete block design (RCBD). Used ss basic for blocking is the difference of tailings area age: 2 years old and 10 years old after mining activities. In both locations, seven indigenous plant species were planted, i.e: Dillenia suffruticosa, Vitex pinnata, Archidendron pauciflorum, Anacardium occidentale, Shorea leprosula, Alstonia scholaris and Hevea brasiliensis. The results showed that the seven indigenous plant species are tolerant to mercury and can grow well in the tailing areas of ex community gold mine of both 2-years and 10-years after mining. Five indigenous plant species use phytostabilization to remediate mercury in the plant tissue, while two others species use phytoextraction. Therefore, the prospect of using indigenous plant species for revegetation in tailings area of ex community gold mine is very well. Abstract

A study was conducted in Bukit Bangkirai forest, East Kalimantan, to understand the impact of forest fire on the existence of soil fungi. Three permanent plots were used for the research, i.e. undamaged plot (K), lightly damaged plot (LD), and heavily damaged plot (HD). Each plot was 1 ha and divided into 100 sub-plots (10 m x 10 m). For observation of soil fungi, in the center of the five randomly selected sub-plots from each plot was made a sampling plot (2 m x 2 m). After removing the organic matter surface (O layer), soil sample was collected from top layer (A) and second layer (B) in each of the five sampling plots. Soil fungi were isolated using dilution plate method and they were incubated at room temperature (27-28 oC). This process was replicated two times for each soil sample. The result indicated that forest fire decreased the diversity and population of soil fungi. The highest soil fungi population was found in the undamaged (K) plot at the top layer (A) (389.0 colonies/mg dry soil), while the lowest population was in the lightly damaged plot (LD) at the second layer (B) (12.3 colonies/mg dry soil).
