Abstract

The Mount Gede-Pangrango National Park has an attractive landscape view of mount summits with its crater, genuine floraand fauna of tropical rainforest, and a mild weather. Exploitation is forbidden in the area, but in reality encroachments occur,which will lead to changes in plant population status, particularly for threatened species. The aims of the research were investigate the populations status, dispersion pattern and possible interspecific associations of threatened plant speciesoccurred in the sub montane and montane zones of the Mount Gede-Pangrango National Park. Most of the threatened species occurred in the park had clumped distributions and only one of those showed a regular dispersion, namely Symplocos costata. It should be realized that populations with a clumped dispersion tend to provide over or under estimation of abundance, indicating the need for a larger sampling unit to cover. Based on the association tests conducted, three species (Antidesma tetrandrum, Pinanga coronata, and Castanopsis javanica) were significantly associated with Saurauia bracteosa, while Altingia excelsa and A. tetrandrum with Symplocos costata, as they had association indices more 0.3 using Jaccard Index. Pinanga coronata seems to be relatively closely associated with Saurauia cauliflora, Altingia excelsa with S. bracteosa, and Castanopsis javanica with S. costata. In contrast, Pinanga javana, Calamus adspersus, and Rhododendron album had low degrees of association, indicating their low abundance and co-occurrence with other species. Seven species of threatened plants were recorded in the Mount Gede-Pangrango: 5 of which had been proposed to change in their status. They were Calamus adspersus from vulnerable (V) changed into vulnerable (V UD2)., Lithocarpus indutus from vulnerable changed into critically endangered, Pinanga javana from endangered changed into vulnerable, Rhododendron album from vulnerable changed into endangered, and Saurauia bracteosa from vulnerable changed into endangered. 2004 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: dispersion pattern, interspecific association, population status, threatened plants, Gede-Pangrango National Park

Abstract

Plant species of family Poaceae have important roles in rural economic and daily human life. They have been used inconstructional building, tools, handicrafts, pulps, vegetables, fodder, baskets, traditional medicine, etc. Inventory to knowthe plant species and potentials of Poaceae were conducted in the Purwodadi Botanic Garden through observation in fields, interview, and literature studies. The results showed that there were 25 species of bamboos and 36 species of grasses in the garden. The bamboos genera Bambusa and Gigantochloa have more species than the other genera. Abstract

Fossil woods in Java Island have been excavated and sold for outdoor ornaments or indoor decoration purposes since 30years ago. These fossils are in danger of being drained out without known identities, composition and history. This studywas aimed to find out the botanical identity and geographical aspect of a newly recovered silicified fossil wood from Bantenarea in the west region of Java Island. The fossil trunk 28 m in length and 105 cm in diameter was buried in a tuffaceoussandstone layer. The age of the stratum was thought to be Lower Pliocene. A small sample was cut from the outer part ofthe log and then ground to obtain thin section for anatomical observation. The main anatomical features of the fossil woodare as follows: wood diffuse porous; vessel almost exclusively solitary, vascicentric tracheid present; axial intercellular canalpresent, distributed in long tangential rows; fibers with distinctly bordered pit. Abstract

An experiment was conducted in order to know the population of bacteria from soil in Tudu-Aog village, Passi district, Bolaang Mongondow, North Sulawesi, the purpose of the research was to study the population of bacteria from soil. Fourthy six soil samples were taken from two location, namelyTudu-Aog village and Bugis mountain. Isolation was done by dilution methods on YEMA medium (for Rhizobium bacteria), Winogradsky’s (for Azotobacter bacteria), Pycosvkaya (for Phosphat Solubilizing Bacteria), and selective Difco Pseudomonas (for Pseudomonas bacteria). Incubation at room temperature (27-280C) until 15 days, and the enumeration with plate count method. The highest enumeration of Rhizobium bacteria with plant rhizosphere of Alocasia esculenta (27x105 CFU/g soil), Theobroma cacao (29x105 CFU/g soil),and Euphorbia paniculata (26x105 CFU/g soil), Azotobacter bacteria with plant rhizosphere of Lycopersicum esculantum (38x105 CFU/g soil), Eugenia aromaticum (43x105 CFU/g soil), Andropogon sp. (34x105 CFU/g soil), Phosphat Solubilizing bacteria with plant rhizosphere of Sechium edule (27x105 CFU/g soil), Cinnamomum sp. (48x105 CFU/g soil), Cyathea sp. (72x105CFU/g soil), and Pseudomonas bacteria with plant rhizosphere of Oryza sativa (18x105 CFU/g soil), Vanilla sp. Abstract

Sonneratia spp. was genetically unique genera. They had some members in Java, especially Sonneratia alba and S. caseolaris. This species have ability to cross reproduction, and produce fertile hybrid, although the fertility is lower than the parent, so they hard to differ  morphologically. This research had been done in 6 sites (populations) of the southern and northern coast of Java, i.e. Bogowonto estuary, Kulonprogo (1 pop.), Segara Anakan, Cilacap (2 pops), coast of Pasar Bangi, Rembang (1pop), Juwana estuary, Pati (1 pop), and Canal Wulan estuary, Demak (1 pop). The research indicated that S. alba was more dominant, but there were some confused inmorphological character, that may be caused by hybridization. Isozymic analyses on peroxidase and esterase marker to 60 individuals (10 per population) had been no differing in isozymic band significantly. They have similarity index value more than 60%. It indicated, that they tend to same species than separate it.Keywords: isozyme, diversity, Sonneratia, northern andsouthern coast of Java.

Abstract

Sulawesi is the largest island in Wallacea region and a biogeographically unique area. The island is very rich in endemic species, worldwide known only known from Sulawesi. Nevertheless, scientific knowledge of the plants of Sulawesi is still limited and there is a lack of botanical exploration and publications. In 2000, Tadulako University of Palu with support of the German Research Foundation (DFG), the Universities of Göttingen and Leiden and the Herbarium Bogoriense, hasconstructed a herbarium, the Herbarium Celebense. The herbarium has been registered in the International IndexHerbariorum (New York) with the abbreviation CEB. The Herbarium Celebense contains about 3000 plant specimens,especially from Central Sulawesi and mainly spermatophytes and pteridophytes. Abstract

The main purposes of the research were to support taxonomic evidence data in particular of palinology spesies classified inMyristicaceae family at Java and determine phenetic relationship as an effort of increasing objectivity and repeatability of classification result. Pollen was collected in Herbarium Bogoriense and Bogor Botanical Garden, and prepared for light and Scanning Electron Microscope. Acetolysis method was used for light microscopy of the pollen preparation, and coating with gold was prepared for SEM. Abstract

Pinanga coronata is one of palms species that has complex characters in morphology, because distribution of the species isvery diverse. In the wild, P. coronata is found throughout Java and Bali, occuring on lowland forest to montane forest at altitude 1.900 m asl. This paper presents leaf anatomy observation on 21 samples from different localities and altitudes throughout Java and Bali. Abstract

Baron beach is a specific habitat due its characteristic as a narrow beach with outlet of sub-surface rivers. This researchhad been done in order to know its microbial characteristic. Research used survey method and bacterial identification wasdone based on comparative description. The research showed that during high tide of seawater, the total bacterial countwas 1.0 to 6.0 x 107 cfu/ml on NA and 2.0 to 7.0 x 107 cfu/ml on NA+0.5% NaCl. Furthermore, during the low tide of seawater, the total bacterial count was 1.4 to 8.8 x 108 cfu/ml on NA, and 3.2 to 9.0 106 cfu/ml on NA+0,5% NaCl. This studyfound 14 genera of bacteria and dominated by Gram-negative bacteria. Abstract

The objectives of the research were to study the genetic variation and allozyme band pattern of Pristipomoides multidens from several locations of Indonesian sea based on the pattern of allozyme. Samples of the fish were collected from three geographically different water areas of Bali, Sumbawa and Moluccas. Ten different enzymes, ADH, MDH, LDH, α-GPD,PGM, GPI, IDH, ME, EST and SP were used in this study. Polymorphic loci of genetic variation were in line with the Hardy-Weinberg’s equilibrium. The genetic variation was calculated based on the proportion of polymorphic loci, frequency ofallele, amount of allele per locus, and heterozygosity. The results of this research indicate that from the 10 differentenzymes, 16 loci were detected, and 3 of them were polymorphic (PGM-1, GPI-1 and EST). Population of Moluccas has 2 polymorphic loci (PGM-1 and GPI-1) by proportion of 13%, however, population from Bali and Sumbawa has only 1polymorphic locus (EST-1) with the value of 6%. The allelic number per locus was 1.06 – 1.125, while the observedheterozygosity (D) of the populations was 0.005. The fish population of Moluccas is having better genetic variation than that of population from Bali and Sumbawa. The genetic distance between populations was between 0.002 – 0.005. The closestgenetic distance is between Bali and Sumbawa (D = 0,002), while the longest genetic distance was resulted betweenpopulations of Sumbawa and Moluccas (D = 0.005). Based on the UPGMA cluster analysis for the genetic distances,indicated that there was 2 main geographic groups, (1) Moluccas, and (2) Bali and Sumbawa as single population.© 2003 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: allozyme, genetic variation, Pristipomoides multidens.
