Abstract

Research on feed plants selection and nesting site of cuscus (Phalanger sp.) was conducted in Nature Reserve of Gunung Mutis, West Timor, East Nusa Tenggara. The study was done in the montane rain forest with the altitude of 1530-2010 m a.s.l. The results showed seven species of plants was selected by cuscus as their nesting site and 41 species of plants as their feed resources. Parts of the plants being consumed were young leaves, flower, and fruit. Their habitat was damaged caused by exploitation of the forest. Abstract

Feeding and habitat of slow Loris (Nycticebus coucang) in conservation forest located in Rangkasbitung-South Banten has been studied. This study was conducted in protected forest of the Paniga and Kiaralawang Baduy tribe in Cibeo for the inner Baduy and in Tinjoleat forest for the outer Baduy. The Study site was located about 250-610 m above sea level. The collected data consist of the type of feeding, nest sites and health. During the observation there were 61 plant species from 24 families which were dominated by Moraceae and Euphorbiaceae were consumed by slow Loris. Six other kinds of feed consist of small animals: reptile, mammals, aves, and insects. Abstract

An important component of many studies of cryopreservation of fish spermatozoa is the type of extenders and cryoprotectants. The suitability of extenders and cryoprotectants differs from one fish to another. There are many studies have been done in cryopreservation of fish spermatozoa. However, there are few review have been done. This review reveals some aspects of cryopreservation especially the role of extender and cryoprotectant in fish sperm cryopreservation. Fish produce high viscosity of sperm and in some cases only small volume is produced. Before cryopreserved in liquid nitrogen, sperm have to dilute with extenders and for long-term cryopreservation,cryoprotectants are needed to protect the sperm cell from cold and hot shock treatments and prevent cell dehydration during pre-freezing, freezing and post thawed. The suitability of extenders and cryoprotectants differs from one fish to another. Over the last decade, studies on the cryopreservation of mammalian sperm, animal husbandry sperm and human sperm have progressed significantly but studies on fish sperm is still confined to some aquatic.© 2005 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKey words: fish, sperm, cryopreservation, extenders, cryoprotectants

Abstract

Bali cattle is an Indonesian native beef cattle, the result of domestication of Banteng (Bos-bibos banteng). The main problem faced in the development of Bali cattle is the low quality of breed, which is predicted as the effect of inbreeding or raising management. The affects of genetic and cross breeding which usually inflict a loss are the decreasing of cattle’s endurance, fertility and birth weight. Seeing the fact, the government effort to introduce a quality bull to the breed source areas, the determination of cattle release including the controll on the cutting of productive female cattle, and to exactly count the number of Bali cattle which can be released in order to do not disturb its population balance, so it is necessary to do conservation attempt by in-situ and ex-situ. The result of this study shows that the characteristics on genetic resource of Bali cattle which comprises documentation, evaluation on reproduction and production, and attempt in increasing Bali cattle’s genetic quality in Indonesia have been done, eventhough those are still limited.© 2005 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKeywords: Bali cattle, animal genetic resource, reproduction, production

Abstract

Acacia mangium has been widely planted in industrial forest plantation (HTI). High litter accumulation in floor of A. mangium (Acacia) plantation due to slow process of decomposition, may disturb nutrient cycling process. It is also vulnerable to forest fire especially in dry season. The research was aimed to clarify the density of soil macrofauna in Acacia plantation and the roles of macrofauna in the decomposition of Acacia litter. The density of macrofauna was estimated by using pitfall traps and hand-sorting method in Acacia stand, at Wanagama Reaserch Center, Gadjah Mada University (GMU). In the laboratory, Spirobolus sp. (Diplopoda) were fed with the litter of Acacia and the ingestion rate, defecation rate, and assimilatioan rate were determined. C and N content of the litter and feces wereanalyzed at Laboratory of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture GMU. The results showed that the density of soil macrofauna was low (74.6 individual/m2). The study in laboratory showed that Spirobolus did not est newly fallen leaves of Acacia. Ingestion rate, defecation rate, assimilation efficiency of millipede fed with partly decomposed Acacia leaves were 76.8 mg/g/day, 7.0 mg/g/day, 6.1 mg/g/day respectively. C/N ratio of feces was lower than that of partly decomposed Acacia leaves. It indicated significant change during gut passage of Spirobolus sp. Abstract

Sambar deer (Cervus unicolor) is the biggest of tropical deer with its distribution in Indonesia limited to Kalimantan and Sumatera islands and neighboring islands near Sumatera. Several countries such as Malaysia and Thailand have been developing their tropical deer farming, whereas in Indonesia they are still in its infancy, as captive breeding. The knowledge on the biology of reproduction from tropical deer is still limited, particularly those under their natural habitat. An evaluation on the reproduction profiles of captive sambar deer were conducted by analyzing log book of the captive breeding in East Kalimantan. The results indicated that conception rates was very low, only 48,8% (SD=16.24; n=10 years) with peak calving time between June and July and mean calving date was on 4 July (SD=10.4 days; n=109 fawns). Calving interval was 388,2 days (SD=82.45; n=33 fawns), with natural nursing lasted for 148 days. Young hind gave birth for the first time at the age of 693.8 days (SD=89.40; n=4 hinds), giving a time estimate of first mating at the age of 453 days.© 2005 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKeywords: Cervus unicolor, sambar deer, calving pattern, captivity, East Kalimantan.

Abstract

The physiological character, especially the effect of pH and organic substrate on the growth and activity of some ammoniaoxidizing bacteria was carried out. The results show that eight out of twenty isolates have ability to reduce ammonium, two of them i.e. isolate AOB1 and AOB2 could reduce more than 90% of ammonium. The growth and activity to reduce ammonium to nitrite was attained optimum at pH 7-8. From the result also indicated that the growth and activity of both isolate AOB1 and AOB2 were higher on the organic carbon (acetate)-containing media. Abstract

Research about species description of Rhizophoraceae family in mangrove forest at Baluran National Park was conducted from June to October 2003. The method were plot and survey. There were nine species of Rhizophoraceae. The species at mangrove were Bruguiera cylindrica, B. gymnorrhiza, B. sexangula, Ceriops decandra, C. tagal, Rhizophora apiculata, R. lamarckii, R. mucronata, and R. stylosa. Abstract

Agricultural wastes, such as coconut meal and kernel palm meal can be used to fulfill the need of feed for ruminants ormonogastrics. Fermentation technology using Aspergillus niger has been reported allow to increase their nutritive value.Isolation of the asporogenous strain which could spored at room temperature but could not spored at 37oC is expected to sole the fermentation of spores in the fermentation product. The spore formation of mutants at the fourth day incubationtime (10%) was less than the wild type (100%). The variance analysis of protein content in vitro Dry Matter Digestibility (IVDMD) and in vitro Protein Digestibility (IVPD) showed that the kind of mutants were interacted with the incubation time(P<0,01). The highest protein content of coconut meal was obtained from E27 mutant (33.0%), kernel palm meal wasobtained from E14 mutant (31.4%) at the fourth day of incubation time. The highest IVDMD of coconut meal (62.1%), kernel palms meal (61.8%) at the fourth day incubation time and from all E27 mutant. Abstract

The selection of appropriate rattan for a certain use must be based on adequate information about its potency, anatomicalstructure, and chemical properties. Standards methods of inventory development by Curtis method was used to obtain data on its density and frequency. To know the anatomical structure of preparation were made according to Schultze method and microtome preparation according to Staining Paraffin Section with Safranin. While to know the chemical component of rattan stem the analyzed by Standard Industry Indonesia procedures. Calamus occidentalis is one among other Java rattan species which its distribution is limited in the area of Ujung Kulon National Park, West Java. C. occidentalis may be utilized for various purposes based on the following characteristics: species density of 21 cane/ha; and anatomical structure: fiber length of 2204 μm, fiber-wall thickness of 4.26 μm, vascular bundle diameter of 812.5 μm, metaxylem diameter of 293.75 μm, proxylem diameter of 43.5 μm, and phloem diameter of 37.5 μm. Its chemical components are cellulose (49.95%), lignin (22.39%), and air-dry moisture (12.27%). Based on the above information, C. occidentalis rattan species possibly can be used as an alternative substitute of Calamus manan, an endangered rattan species, because several properties of C. occidentalis has similar with that of C. manan.© 2004 Jurusan Biologi FMIPA UNS SurakartaKeywords: commercial-value, possible utilization, Calamus occidentalis
