Abstract

Misestimating portion sizes of food consumed will affect the quality of the estimate and result in inaccurate nutrient intake. Conventional digital food scales only measure body weight without listing nutritional values, thus limiting their usefulness in health education and promotion. This study aims to develop and test Nutridi, a modified digital food scale equipped with nutritional reference values, as a tool to support nutrition education. Research Methods This research is a quantitative study with a research and development (R&D) design at Poltekkes Kemenkes Yogyakarta between April and October 2022. The object of this study is the Nutridi digital scale, developed by integrating food composition data into the digital weighing system. Data processing using the Stata application began with a normality test using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and then a paired t-test. The results of weighing 62 food ingredients showed that the Nutridi digital scale was proven to be precise (CV 0%) and accurate equivalent to the Camry digital scale (mean difference ?1 g), The normality test on the distribution of differences between the Nutridi digital scale and the Camry digital scale (pooled, n = 186) with Kolmogorov–Smirnov showed deviations from the normal distribution (mean diff 0.0430 g; SD 0.2034 g; D = 0.5407; p <0.001), which was likely influenced by the large number of identical difference values ??(ties; e.g. 0 g or ±1 g) due to the limited resolution of the measuring instrument. However, the paired t-test per ingredient showed that for ingredients with measurement variations, there was no significant difference between the two scales (p>0.05), while for ingredients with all identical replicates between tools, the t-statistic was not calculated because the variance was zero which practically indicated that the results of both tools were exactly the same. In conclusion, the Nutridi digital scale has good precision and accuracy and is suitable for use as a learning tool in food weighing practicums at the Nutrition Department of the Ministry of Health's Polytechnic of Health, as well as for household use. Further research is needed to validate its accuracy, improve its usability, and expand its food database for broader applications.

Abstract

DNA isolation is a fundamental technique in molecular biology and medical research. Despite its importance, structured evaluations of DNA isolation practicums in medical education remain limited, particularly in Indonesia. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a column-based DNA isolation practicum in improving students’ understanding of biomolecular techniques. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design was conducted with 163 second-year medical students at Universitas Islam Indonesia. Whole blood samples were used for DNA isolation employing a commercial column-based kit (Favorgen). DNA concentration was measured using a NanoDrop spectrophotometer (ng/µL). Students’ knowledge was assessed through pretest and posttest scores, and learning experiences were further evaluated using a structured questionnaire on teaching assistant performance and laboratory facilities. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and descriptive statistics (SPSS v23). The practicum yielded DNA concentrations ranging from 26.25 to 1495.73 ng/µL, although one sample failed to be detected. Students’ mean test scores significantly increased from 64.63 (SD 24.28) to 93.19 (SD 11.32) (p < 0.001). Questionnaire results demonstrated high satisfaction, with mean ratings of 3.94 for assistant performance and 3.93 for laboratory facilities (scale 0–4). The column-based DNA isolation practicum effectively enhanced students’ theoretical knowledge and provided hands-on experience in molecular laboratory skills. Despite some variability in DNA yield, the overall evaluation indicates strong pedagogical value. These findings support the integration of structured DNA isolation practicums into medical curricula to strengthen competency in biomolecular sciences. Future research should explore long-term retention of skills and optimization of practical protocols.

Abstract

The use of augmented reality (AR) technology in health education is growing rapidly due to its ability to provide interactive and immersive learning experiences. However, research that comprehensively evaluates the feasibility of AR applications on female reproductive system material is still limited. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of an augmented reality (AR)-based application as an interactive medium in learning about the female reproductive system. The evaluation was conducted on four main aspects, namely: software engineering, learning design, visual communication, and user acceptance. The research method used is a quantitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through assessment questionnaires by experts and end users (students). The evaluation results show that the software engineering aspect obtained a feasibility score of 82% (excellent feasibility), the learning design aspect 85% (excellent feasibility), the visual communication aspect 71% (good feasibility), and the user acceptance aspect 85% (excellent feasibility). These findings indicate that the developed AR application is generally very suitable for use as a learning medium, especially in supporting the understanding of the concept of the female reproductive system interactively and contextually. However, the visual communication aspect still requires improvement to optimize the user experience. This research contributes to the development of innovative learning media in the field of health education and opens up opportunities for further research that tests the effectiveness of learning quantitatively and in the long term.
