Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant changes to family life, including the role of parents in accompanying their children in the digital era. This study examines the role of parents in supporting children's digital literacy during the pandemic, while also identifying challenges in minimizing the risks of exposure to harmful online content. Using a quantitative approach, the study involved 25,164 children and 14,169 parents across Indonesia. The findings show a drastic increase in children's gadget use, with the majority of time spent on online entertainment. However, parental supervision remains limited, both in terms of quantity and quality. Only 59.1% of fathers and 68% of mothers consistently provide digital literacy education. This lack of supervision exposes children to risks such as cyberbullying, exposure to harmful content, and technology addiction. The study highlights the importance of collaboration between parents and educational institutions in strengthening safe and beneficial digital literacy practices for children in the digital era. Keywords: Children's digital literacy, family education, harmful online content, parental supervision, technology addiction.

Abstract

Effective communication strategies can increase public awareness and understanding of climate change, leading to behavioural changes that support environmental sustainability. However, how climate change communication has influenced responsible environmental behaviour among residents of Niger state has largely remained uncertain. The study was guided by four research objectives with survey as the method of enquiry, while the questionnaire served as the instrument for data collection. Taro Yamane (1964) statistical formula was used to arrive at a sample size of 400 respondents derived from the study population, while the theory of reasoned action (TRA) served as the theoretical framework. Findings revealed high level of awareness and knowledge of climate change communications among residents of Niger state with radio and public campaigns identified to have played crucial roles in disseminating climate change information. The study concluded that, diverse communication channels and appropriate framing techniques should be utilized to not only create awareness about climate change effects, but to also drive people to act to maintain a sustainable environment. It was recommended among other things that climate change messages should be disseminated utilising both the conventional and social media to educate and inform a more diverse and heterogeneous audience. Abstract

This study examined how language use and communication strategies influence doctor-patient interactions in Tanzanian public hospitals. Guided by Communication Accommodation Theory, the study focused on Amana, Mwananyamala, and Temeke Regional Referral Hospitals. Using a phenomenological qualitative design, data were collected through observations, interviews, and document reviews from 90 participants (30 doctors, 30 nurses, and 30 patients). Data were analyzed using NVivo 12 software, enabling thematic coding and sentiment analysis. Findings revealed that Swahili was the dominant language, but code-switching with English was common, particularly for technical terms. While simplification, analogies, non-verbal cues, and occasional third-party interpretation improved understanding, excessive or unexplained English terms led to confusion especially among elderly or less-educated patients. Cultural and linguistic mismatches further hindered communication when doctors failed to adapt to patients' backgrounds. The study recommends Swahili communication training, standardized bilingual materials, and integration of communication skills into medical education. These findings contribute to efforts toward linguistically inclusive and culturally responsive healthcare in Tanzania.

Abstract

The digital landscape is transforming perspectives and approaches within the modern tourism industry. In previous eras, the approach to tourism was centered on exploiting natural beauty. Today, the focus has shifted towards the narrative of tourist experiences. Furthermore, the rising popularity of culinary tourism through social media and mass media channels has played a role in this paradigm shift. One country with popular culinary products is Thailand. This research will analyze how the phenomenon of culinary promotion in Thailand can be seen as a practice of gastrodiplomacy executed through a digital branding strategy. This study employs a qualitative research approach with a case study strategy. Data was collected using an open-ended online questionnaire. Research informants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The criteria for informants were undergraduate students aged 18-25 who are active users of various social media platforms. This study found that culinary-based tourism promotion strategies on digital platforms can persuade audiences. Culinary content on digital media not only fosters the intention to travel but also awakens gastronomic curiosity—the desire to experience cuisine firsthand in its place of origin. Two key elements of content quality were identified: the authenticity of personal storytelling and visual quality. Both elements play a role in the promotional effectiveness of culinary content. The anatomy of the most appealing advertisement for the audience is content that can present a complete experiential narrative, centers on the authenticity of street food, and values the process of creating culinary products as a cultural art form. These findings offer a strategic model for countries with similar potential, particularly Indonesia, to optimize gastronomy as a tool for tourism promotion on the global digital stage.

Abstract

The research offers insight into news outlets to explain how traumatic incidents are presented in Bangladeshi field journalism, and it, therefore, fills a significant gap in the media studies of Global South. It is one of the earliest attempts of its sort to embrace a mixed-methods approach to such a study. In a bid to expose themselves to psychological harm, journalists usually play first responder during situations involving pandemics, protests, and disasters. Even though there has been a report of high prevalence of PTSD, depression and burnout internationally, there has been sparse systematic data on the same in South Asia. It is a mixed-methods study that will investigate findings on how reporting of traumatic events, such as the COVID-19 epidemic, political instability, and industrial accidents, affected the Bangladeshi field journalists in their mental health in the period 2020-2025. Consecutive survey of 100 reporters and 15 interview qualitative interviews showed that 10% respondents fit the PTSD aspects (PCL-5 ≥33) to 15% moderate to severe depression (PHQ-9 ≥10), 20% with anxiety disorder (GAD-7 ≥10) and 30% with burnouts (MBI≥27). It was also discovered that two-thirds of journalists were accompanied by symptoms of great depressive level, and a significant percentage of journalists took maladaptive coping measures such as using substances (30%), and avoidance (55%). The institutional help, nonetheless, is little, indicating the dire necessity of introducing trauma-aware mental health services to the media sector. It did not have any institutional backing up till 2025 when programs such as Khola Janala counseling and gender-based para-counselor were established but still very few. The evidence suggests that Bangladeshi journalists are at risk with mental health equivalent to war correspondents, but with no systemic coverage and PRISM has not been established, counseling services, trauma-related newsroom changes, and stigma reduction initiatives are urgently needed to maintain the freedom of the press.

Abstract

Workplace conditions significantly impact journalists' work-life balance and psychological well-being. This study explores male journalists' challenges in maintaining personal relationships outside of work via a phenomenological approach using purposive and non-proportional sampling to understand how they experience newsroom demands and balance their relationships. Respondents revealed the complexities of balancing such relationships and their professional responsibilities. The study identified three main themes: the impact of newsroom demands on work-life balance and romantic prospects, coping mechanisms and boundary management, and conflict resolution outside work. Researchers also saw a divide between older and younger participants regarding these themes. These findings provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by male Filpino journalists and the strategies they employ to navigate their personal and professional lives. Recommendations emphasize the need for tailored support systems within newsrooms. By advocating for policy changes such as respecting journalists' time off, newsrooms can foster an environment that protects their well-being.

Abstract

The massive spread of narratives tied to emotional constructs such as threats and hatred has brought about destructive impacts on society. There is a growing need to enhance knowledge and skills in media engagement, particularly in responding to circulating information. Digital literacy has become a crucial aspect that must be improved by the information society. Through an education-entertainment approach, Nitijana emerges as a medium for digital literacy education in the form of a game. This study examines the digital literacy elements presented in the Nitijana game through qualitative content analysis. The analysis draws on Japelidi's components of digital literacy, Schell's game development framework, and the concept of cyberspace to dissect this phenomenon. Users are able to play the game while simultaneously learning and practicing various aspects of digital literacy, such as fact-checking hoaxes and verifying information. The findings of this research reveal several aspects of digital literacy, including access, selection, comprehension, analysis, verification, evaluation, participation, and distribution. Meanwhile, the fundamental elements found in the Nitijana game include its mechanics, storyline, and aesthetics. It is hoped that this article will contribute to the field of communication science, particularly in the areas of entertainment media and digital literacy.
