Abstract

Abstract Persuasion or Attitude Change has been a main concern in the study of psychology. There have been many theories which evaluate the extent of variables in changing attitudes. However, none of them have conclusive results. Furthermore, the trend in the research of attitude change has been in the context of business or sales. There is very little to none research made to explain persuasion in religious sermons. Therefore, this study is meant to find how people could change their attitudes in religion. In particular, the subject used in this study is Zakir Naik, a well-known muslim proselytizer. He is well-versed in the field of comparative religion and has been holding talks and debates between religions. Many people from Christianity, Catholics, Hinduism etc. have become converts to Islam because of his speech. In this study, it was found that he used powerless language markers in order to persuade people into converting to Islam. He used powerless language markers to diminish Christianity and compliment Islam. Granted, with his vast knowledge of both theology he was capable of selecting certain verses in Christianity and proving that they are incoherent. Thus, people who once believed in Christianity, converted to Islam.Keywords: Persuasion, Attitudde Change, Religion, HedgesAbstrakPersuasi atau Attitude Change (perubahan pendirian) adalah suatu bahasan utama di bidang ilmu psikologi. Sudah ada beragam teori yang dibentuk untuk menentukan factor-faktor yang memengaruhi perubahan pendirian. Namun, belum ditemukan hasil yang konklusif. Selain itu, trend penelitian perubahan pendiriankebanyakan berada di konteks bisnis atau penjualan. Sangat sedikit sekali penelitian yang berfokus kepada ceramah keagamaan. Khususnya, subyek yang digunakan di dalam studi ini adalah Zakir Naik, seorang Dai Islam terkenal. Beliau sangat ahli di bidang perbandingan agama, dan beliau telah mengadakan acara dialog dan debat keagamaan. Banyak orang dari agama Kristen, Katolik, Hindu, dll. telah berpindah ke Islam dikarenakan ceramah beliau. Di studi ini, ditemukan bahwa beliau menggunakan hedges untuk membujuk orang masuk ke Islam. Beliau menggunakan hedges untuk mendiskreditkan ajaran agama Kristen dan memuji Islam. Tentu saja, dengan keluasan wawasannya atas ajaran teologi keduanya, beliau mampu memilih dan memilah suatu ayat di dalam Alkitab dan membuktikannya salah. Maka dari itu, penganut agama Kristen dapat terbujuk untuk masuk ke Islam.Kata kunci: Persuasi, Perubahan Pendirian, Agama, Hedges

Abstract

Code switching is phenomenon which occurs in bilingual country,such us,Indonesia. Code switching is the process of switching or mixing two languages or more with in or between sentence. Most of researchers analyze code switching in oral text. So, this study used written text to be analyzed, specially in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC). CMC is the communication between human by computer. This study used Instagram of DianPelangi who is famous designer. This study focused on her caption which is categorized asasynchronous CMC. The aim of this study is to uncover the reactions of her followers towards code switching in her caption. Questionnaire was the technique to collect the data. The results of this study revealed that most of the participants assumed that the use of code switching by Dian Pelangi is positive. However, the half of participants prefer if she employed only one language while writing caption. Keywords: language attitude, code switching, Instagram

Abstract

This paper is aimed to analyze people?s lifestyle that is represented through the choice of products based on advertisements. It used two printed advertisements of drink products which were Pocari Sweat and Coca Cola. The ads were then showed to 30 young adults as the participants. The results showed that 20 participants were fond of healthy lifestyle which was portrayed by Pocari Sweat while 10 of the participants felt that Coca Cola represented their lifestyle, in this case western lifestyle as the coke is an American product. Meanwhile, according to viewer reading theory, the participants were divided into three categories. 13 participants were regarded as a preferred reader as they catch the idea that the ad offered while 14 other participants belonged to oppositional reader since they were interested with the ads yet they were not really engaged with the products so it did not affect their choice at all. Lastly, 4 of the participants would like to think further if they face the ads.

Abstract

Breaking Dawn novel tells the story of the continuation from previous novel and with another problems that Bella has. Start with Bella?s decision to marry Edward and ended up having half human half vampire daughter. This thesis will analyse each component from triangular theory of love that being depicted in the novel using structuralism approach. There are three components of triangular theory of love. They are passion, intimacy, and commitment. It is best to analyze how triangular theory of love depicted in this novel using structuralism approach. How each character action in conscious way is constructed and depicted from three components triangular theory of love itself. Passion as one of the components from triangular theory of love put the study in to how people attracted to someone or something and there is always a reason for that. This component as one of the components in triangular theory of love represents in such an event before Bella and Edward?s wedding. Intimacy as one of the components from triangular theory of love put the study in to how people can show their closeness with someone that they loved. In Breaking Dawn novel, this thesis can analyze from such an event during Bella and Edward?s honeymoon in Isle Esme. Commitment as one of the components from triangular theory of love put the study in about how big a person love is for her beloved one. In Breaking Dawn novel, commitment component depicted during Bella and Edward?s wedding.

Abstract

Person deixis is a type of deixis that exemplified the encoding of participants? role in the speech event where the utterance in question is given. In other words, the expression of person deixis is described as referring to the person who the speaker intends to refer. In political speech, person deixis plays a very important role. It can be used to represent the speaker?s identity through his way the speaker refers to himself, his opponent, and his audience. In this study, the writer examines person deixis used by the Eighth President of Singapore, Halimah Yacob in her speeches. This study aims to find out the type of person deixis and to explain the roles of personal pronoun (I, we, you, they) used by Halimah Yacob in her speeches. This study uses a qualitative method, documentation technique in collecting data. The result shows the types of person deixis that are first person, second person, and third person deixis appeared in Halimah?s speeches. The most types of person deixis that used by Halimah Yacob is first person deixis. Another, there are some roles of personal pronoun (I, you, we, they) that used by Halimah Yacob. The most personal pronouns in three speeches used by Halimah Yacob is I then following by pronoun we. Halimah becomes a president is not only there is no candidate who passed a Certificate of Eligibility but she wants to show her positive qualities through her personal experiences before becoming a president by using the pronoun I. She also wants to show her commitment seriously to solves the problems that existed in Singapore by using the pronoun I. However, Halimah used the pronoun I to refers herself rather than used pronoun we as represents herself and her administrations. Halimah becomes the only one to be blamed if there is something happen. Even though Halimah used the pronoun I which is distancing herself with her administrations but she still can get responsibility from the audiences. In this case, the second place is the use of personal pronoun we which is referred to Halimah and the audiences. Halimah used the personal pronoun we is to shares responsibility and creates involvement with the audiences. So, Halimah used mostly first person deixis (I and we) above to manipulate the use of pronouns which is to create good effects on the audience, such as highlighting her achievements, shortening the distance from the audience, denying or distancing themselves from the responsibility for specific political action, and encouraging solidarity

Abstract

Abstrak African American Vernacular English (AAVE) adalah sejenis variasi bahasa Inggris Amerika lainnya.Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengklasifikasikan fitur gramatikal bahasa Afrika-Amerika Bahasa Inggris Vernakular yang ditemukan di Toni Cade Bambara, The Lesson dan menggambarkan alasan karakter Afrika-Amerika menggunakan bahasa Afrika-Amerika Vernakular Afrika dalam cerita pendek ini.Penulis lebih fokus pada fitur AAVE dalam sintaksis dan morfologis.Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penulis menemukan sepuluh fitur tata bahasa (Syntactical and Morphological) dari African American Vernacular English (AAVE), berdasarkan pada dua teori oleh Rickford (1999) dan Green (2002).Kesimpulannya penulis mendapatkan alasan orang Afrika-Amerika memanfaatkan AAVE. Dalam setiap narasi dan percakapan, mereka memiliki fitur tata bahasa yang unik.Yaitu untuk menampilkan identitas kelompok etnis Afrika-Amerika dan untuk memunculkan kelas sosial di antara karakter.

Abstract

This research focuses on the analysis of speech act and transitivity emerge in Annual Press Statement Speech 2017 by Minister Foreign Affairs. The purpose of this research is to reveal the significance of speech act and transitivity emerged through Annual Press Statement speech. This research includes the analysis of each types of speech act and transitivity process in the speech by employing theory of Speech Act by Yule combined with Transitivity process theory proposed by Halliday. It is combined with illocutionary act and Halliday?s SFL theory to analyze the function implicitly emerged throughout the speech. Since the data of this research are the Minister utterances in script of Annual Press Statement speech, this research employed descriptive qualitative approach and documentary study. The results show that all of the types of speech act are found in the speech. Those are; Representatives, Declaratives, Expressives, Directives and Commissives. Representatives are the most frequently used type in the speech it is used to convey factual information and description regarding with diplomacy performances. Meanwhile among six types of transitivity process, there are only three types that are found from the Minister utterance in the speech, those are; Material Process, Mental Process, and Relational Process. Since those processes are three main processes in English Transitivity approach. Material process is the most frequently used process since it described tangible action in diplomacy context such as performances and accomplishments of Indonesia diplomacy. Through Material Process, the Minister conveyed act and performance which is accomplished by the Minister and staffs. The Minister also used Mental process to share her feeling and perception toward challenge encountered in managing diplomacy affairs. While the Minister used Relational process to describe the identifying of Indonesia by stating Indonesia?s contribution and cooperation for diplomacy. Based on the analysis in revealing the function of Speech act and Transitivity emerged through the Annual Press Statement speech, this research is analysed by employing theory of illocutionary of speech act combined with transitivity and Halliday?s SFL theories. There are four major functions of speech act and transitivity produced in the speech which is identified from different process of transitivity and types of speech act. Material process followed by representatives type of speech act produce the function for empowering the audiences by describing the performance, accomplishment and achievement through the speech. The statement contained Material process followed by Directives type created the function for motivating the audience in the form of suggestion to the audience in order to improve their work and performance for diplomacy interest. By applying Representatives and Relational process, it is used to show Indonesia?s integrity in managing diplomacy by describing Indonesia?s involvement and contribution in several associations. The Minister tried to influence the audience in order to increasing their commitment through mental process and expressive type by stating appreciation words for the whole performance and hard work in handling diplomacy concern.

Abstrak Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Deskriptif kualitatif digunakan selama penelitian, karena penelitian ini menggunakan semua ucapan dalam Film Sherlock Holmes-The Game of Shadow. Ini berarti bahwa fokus penelitian dipersempit hanya secara bertahap dan kategori atau konsep analitik ditentukan selama proses penelitian. Data disajikan dari bentuk kata dan ucapan Sherlock Holmes dan karakter lain dalam adegan tertentu dalam "Film Sherlock Holmes-The Game of Shadow". Data dianalisis berdasarkan teori Martin Joos. Selain itu, bagian ini terdiri dari hasil dari jenis gaya bicara, faktor sosial, dan dimensi sosial yang digunakan oleh Sherlock Holmes dan karakter lain dalam film "Sherlock Holmes-The Game of Shadow", konteks sosial yang mempengaruhi Sherlock Holmes untuk gunakan gaya itu. Ada beberapa jenis gaya bicara yang ditemukan dalam penelitian ini. Penulis menemukan 9 data tentang ucapan Sherlock Holmes dan karakter lain yang terdiri dari gaya bicara. Dari data yang telah diambil, semua data akan dianalisis. Data itu juga sudah disortir dari film "Sherlock Holmes-The Game of Shadow" karena jumlah datanya.

Abstract

Abstrak Kesopanan menyiratkan jumlah situasi dalam varietas varietas. Ini digunakan untuk menyampaikan pesan individu untuk mencapai tujuan komunikasi tertentu. Dalam film John Wick Bab 2, semua karakter menggunakan strategi kesopanan untuk mencapai beberapa tujuan untuk meminta atau memberi perintah. Dalam film ini setiap karakter memiliki karakteristik, kekuatan, dan latar belakang sosial masing-masing yang dipengaruhi oleh penggunaan strategi kesopanan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan lima aspek strategi kesopanan, namun hanya empat yang digunakan untuk memverifikasi seluruh data, yaitu strategi yang tidak direkam, botak, yang positif dan negatif. Dokumentasi adalah instrumen penelitian sedangkan deskriptif kualitatif dipilih sebagai metode untuk menganalisis data. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bagaimana karakter utama menggunakan strategi dalam film, serta faktor sosial yang mempengaruhi penggunaan strategi diikuti dengan dampaknya. Data diklasifikasikan berdasarkan empat jenis strategi kesopanan, botak pada catatan, tidak direkam, kesopanan positif dan negatif.

Abstract

Abstrak Kata umpatan sudah menjadi hal yang lumrah di kehidupan sehari-hari, hampir setiap hari dan setiap kejadian akan terdengar kata umpatan diucapkan. Dijaman yang sudah berkembang seperti sekarang ini mengumpat dan melontarkan kata makian sudah tidak lagi menjadi hal yang tabu di masyarakat umum terlebih dikalangan anak muda. Ini menjadikan kata umpatan menjadi hal yang menarik dalam ruang lingkup kebahasaan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengklasifikasikan jenis-jenis dari kata umpatan dan tema nya yang diucapkan oleh karakter utama di dalam film ?The heat?, dan juga mendeskripsikan alasan dari tujuan sang aktris dalam menggunakan bahasa umpatan, dan juga untuk mengetahui dasar kekuasaan/ wewenang yang membuat karakter utama melakukan umpatan di film ini. Penulis di dalam penelitian ini lebih fokus terhadap jenis, tema, tujuan, dan dasar kekuasaan yang membuat pemeran utama melakukan makian. Data yang telah dikumpulkan diambil dari skrip dialog dari karakter utama Shannon Mullins di dalam film ?The Heat?. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penulis menemukan 5 jenis ekspresi makian, 5 jenis tema, 2 jenis bentuk kesopanan, dan satu dasar kekuasaan yang digunakan dalam film ini. Kesimpulanya, penulis telah menemukan dan mengetahui jenis-jenis dan juga tema dari kata makian yang digunakan karakter utama dalam film ?The Heat? dan juga mengetahui alasan dalam penggunaan kata makian dalam kehidupan sosial dan pekerjaannya; terlebih lagi penggunaan dasar kekuasaan dalam penggunaan kata makian tertentu terhadap seseorang. Abstract Nowadays swearing is not taboo anymore in public utterance especially for a teenager. It made swearword becomes one of the most interesting aspect in language. Swearing has some kind of meaning. Because of that, largely people have accepted swearword has a lot of variation. It is believed that swearword is one of the ways to show emotional expression and motive life since it is nearly impossible to strengthen emotional expression without using swearwords. The writer focuses on the types, theme, intensity and base power that construct the character in swearing. The aims of this study are to classify the types of swearword uttered by main character Shannon Mullins in ?The Heat? movie and describe the reasons of the intensity of the speaker in stating the swearword, and what base power that makes her swearing in this movie. the result found that based on the theories served there are 5 types of swearword expression, 5 types of theme, 2 types of impoliteness view, and one type of base power. In conclusions The writer got knowing the types and the theme for each spoken swearword and the reason why the main character used certain swearword, and the base power that support the main character in stating swearword in her daily life.
