Abstract

Psychopath is an interesting form of mental disorder to discuss. Many films show psychopathic behavior which is considered as very cruel and sadistic yet still looks beautiful. Through this study the author wants to invite the reader to recognize the signs of someone who has a tendency to psychopathic behavior. One of the most famous works containing this topic is Perfume: The Story of a Murderer written by Patrick Suskind. Psychopathic behavior displayed in this work is in a character named Jean-Baptise Grenoulie who easily took the lives of 26 virgin girls as perfume ingredient. This study focuses on Grenoulies psychopathic and factors that motivate him to perform psychopathic actions. The theory uses Hervey Cleckleys Mask of Sanity theory which mentions psychopathic characteristics. Combined with the theory of needs by humanist psychologist Abraham Maslow. By using psychoanalytic approach, the data is taken from the novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer. Data were obtained using 16 psychopathic signs belonging to Cleckley which were then adjusted to the signs that emerged from Grenouliet. Which later on writer searched for background or motivation in performing the behavior. This study found that Grenoulie had 13 psychopathic signs from the 16 that had been mentioned. Then the factors underlying the psychopathic behavior are that many of his basic needs are not being met, so those feeling accumulate to the need for actualize himself. It was in this way of actualizing oneself that Grenoulie was referred to as a Psychopath. Keywords: Psychopath, Needs, Behavior, Perfume

Keywords: euphemism, joke, Late Show Language is simple way to communicate with someone else to deliver something not only orally but also written. . On the other hand, language also can be used to make known how your personality is, so that is why every person needs to choose which words that are match for speaking with. In this case, researcher takes euphemism as the theory and explains more about the types of euphemism, the meaning relation of euphemistic and the function of euphemism. It can be seen from the tittle of the research namely, Euphemism Practice by Craig Ferguson for Joking Fashioned in the Late Show. This research uses qualitative approach to answer the research questions. Qualitative approach is chosen as the methodology to analyze the data findings because it is the most suitable method to answer the research questions of the study. This research uses euphemism to analyze the video uttered by Craig Ferguson in the Late Show. This research showed four types of euphemism out of five. It can maintain good relationship between Craig Ferguson and his guests while in the Late Show. In this case, the researcher also did not find all types of euphemism but she only some. Bahasa adalah cara sederhana untuk berkomunikasi dengan orang lain dan menyampaikannya tidak hanya secara lisan tetapi juga tulisan. Di sisi lain, bahasa juga dapat digunakan untuk mengungkap kepribadian seseorang, sehingga setiap orang perlu memilih kata yang cocok dalam berbicara. Dalam hal ini, peneliti mengambil eufemisme sebagai teori dan menjelaskan lebih banyak tentang jenis eufemisme, makna hubungan eufemik dan fungsi eufemisme. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari judul penelitian yaitu, Praktik Eufemisme oleh Craig Ferguson untuk ucapan gaya bercanda di Late Show Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Pendekatan kualitatif dipilih sebagai metodologi untuk menganalisis temuan data karena merupakan metode yang paling cocok untuk menjawab pertanyaan penelitian. Penelitian ini menggunakan eufemisme untuk menganalisis video yang diucapkan oleh Craig Ferguson di acara Late Show. Penelitian ini menghasilkan empat tipe dari lima tipe yang menghasilkan kata-kata eufemisme yang diucapkan oleh Craig Ferguson di Late Show. Hal tersebut, membuat hubungan antara Craig Ferguson dan tamunya berjalan dengan baik. Dalam hal ini, peneliti juga tidak menemukan semua jenis eufemisme tetapi ia hanya menemukan beberapa jenisnya saja.

Abstract

Maxims was a principle must be applied in the communication process. According to Grice (1975), there were 4 maxims that must be obeyed in the communication process so that the process runs smoothly: quality, quantity, relation, and manner. In creating humor, a comic flouted one or more maxims. Analyzing flouting maxims in stand-up comedy would be interesting because a comic would flout maxims without any communication process in accordance with the purposes of this research. This study used qualitative method to answer research questions. The qualitative method was chosen as a methodology for analyzing data findings because it was the most suitable method for answering research questions. This research uses Grice theory to analyze utterance in stand-up comedy by Sierra Katow. The results of this study are as follows: (1) there were 4 types of flouting maxims that could be found in stand-up comedy act by Sierra Katow such as flouting maxim of quantity, quality, relation, and manner; (2) there were 7 of 11 types of humor that could be found in stand-up comedy act by Sierra Katow such as irony, satire, sarcasm, overstatement and understatement, self-deprecation, teasing, and double entendres; (3) there were 3 mechanisms of flouting maxims created humorous sense in stand-up comedy act by Sierra Katow such as incongruity, hostility, and release. In conclusion, Sierra flouted the maxims using 3 mechanisms and the flouting maxims have created on those 7 types of humor. In addition, there were 3 mechanism of creating humor (incongruity, hostility, and release) by flouting maxims of those 3 mechanisms.

Abstract

AbstractPhenomenon called code mixing currently becomes a well-known event in Indonesia. Indonesians tend to combine two languages or more in every utterances or sentence and upload it in social media. The reason for this may come from their surrounding environment (external factors) or their desire (internal factors). This study aims to determine how Suhay Salim, a popular beauty vlogger on YouTube, mixes her languages between Bahasa Indonesia and English in each of her videos. Analysis of the video demonstrated that there are three types of code mixing and five reasons influencing Suhay Salim?s code mixing found in her video. The results indicate that Insertion becomes the dominant type of code mixing because word is the smallest unit that can be inserted into a given structure easily. It also indicates that the most occurring reason influencing Suhay Salim is Low Frequency Words where Bahasa Indonesia word is harder to remember, less popular and has unstable sense/meaning while English word is easier to remember, more popular and has stable sense/meaning.Keywords: code mixing, social media, video, beauty vlogger.

Abstract

Keywords: Language choice, women language features Language choice is a phenomenon that is common in multilingual societies. Language encounters that happen over and over can create a bilingual or multilingual group. This research is motivated by the use of the diversity of language codes used by members of the EQWIP HUBs community. EQWIP HUBs is a community in surabaya build by volunteers from Canada. The purposes of this study are 1) to describe the form of language choice and explain the factors that determine the language choice in this community, 2) to know what personal reason that makes them use different languages and 3) to describe what women language feature use in this community and how they enhance English language by using women linguistic features. This study examines the sociolinguistic perspective on language choice in the EQWIP HUBs community based on Hymes? theory known as the SPEAKING acronym, such as (1) setting and scene (2) participants, (3) ends, (4) act sequence, (5) keys, (6) instrumentalities, (7) norms, and (8) genre. The last problem use Lakoff theory about women language features. The method used in this research is qualitative method. Some steps has been done such as, observation, interview and transcribe. The result of this study state that English is the main language used in this community because of the rules set by the community and presence of the native speaker. Language choice from three languages, English, Indonesian and Javanese is only done by the members. This research acknowledges that language choice can only be made by a multilingual or bilingual group. All members in this community are multilingual people who speak three languages and they use the three languages with different interlocutors.

Abstract

Abstrak Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk: (1) mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis slang yang digunakan oleh gamers dalam komunitas game online, (2) memahami konteks dalam penggunaan slang words oleh gamers, (3) mengungkap alasan penggunaan slang words oleh gamers, (4) menganalisis dampak penggunaan slang words terhadap gamers lainnya. Penelitian ini menggunakan kajian dari beberapa konsep yakni, konsep Zotevska tentang ragam dan keunikan slang, yang akan didukung dengan konsep konteks sosial dan variasi bahasa yang dikemukakan oleh Hudson. Guna mendukung konsep penggunaan bahasa, penelitian ini akan menggunakan konsep Croft mengenai masyarakat penutur dan kaitan antara bahasa dengan masyarakat yang dikemukakanolehWardhaugh. Lebih jauh, penelitian ini akan didukung juga dengan konsep game online yang dirumuskan oleh Crawford serta Castranova. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif. Penelitian ini memilih subjek yang tergabung dalam komunitas “Clash World” dalam permainan Clash of Clans. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan online observation. Peneliti bergabung dalam komunitas yang dimaksud, serta interview yang dilakukan kepada gamers. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan, penggunaan slang words dalam komunitas game online Clash of Clans memiliki beberapa varian, antara lain: blending, acronyms, abbreviation, misspelling, swearing words. Lebih jauh, game online merupakan “rumah kedua” bagi gamers. Mereka bisa mendapatkan identitas baru di dalamnya. Beberapa modal simbolik yang bisa diraih dari game online ini (avatar, nama karakter, gaya bicara), mendukung gamers untuk merengkuh dan membentuk identitas barunya. Penggunaan slang dalam komunitas game online adalah sebuah variasi bahasa yang diperoleh dari kelompok penutur. Slang menjadi berbeda dari bahasa konvensional dan bahasa formal, dan ini hanya bisa dipahami oleh seluruh anggota komunitas game online “Clash of Clans”. Kata Kunci: slang, variasi bahasa, game online, identitas virtual   Abstract The aims of this study are to: (1) identify the types of slang used by gamers in the online gaming community, (2) understand the context of the use of slang words by gamers, (3) uncovering the reason for the use of slang words by gamers, (4) analyze the impact of the use of slang words against other gamers. The concept used in this study is slang diversity and uniqueness by Zotevska, which is supported by the concept of social context and variation of language. This study used qualitative methods, and subject of this study are the members of the community "Clash World" in the game Clash of Clans. Data was collected by online observation. The researchers joined the community in question, as well as interviewed gamers. The results of this study showed that the use of slang words in the online gaming community Clash of Clans had several variants, among others: blending, acronyms, abbreviation, misspelling, swearing words. Furthermore, online gaming is a “secondary home" for gamers, in which they get a new identity. This study concluded that various symbolic capital to be gained from online games (avatar, character names, style of speech), supporting gamers to embrace and form a new identity. The use of slang in the online gaming community was a variety of language that come from a group. Slang as a language that is different from the conventional order of language, was only understood by members of the "Clash of Clans" community. Abstract

Abstrak Studi ini fokus pada konvergensi bahasa yang dilakukan oleh dua pekerja migran, guru native bahasa Inggris berkebangsaan Inggris terhadap pekerja lokal di EF Pakuwon Trade Centre, Surabaya. Pekerja lokal diartikan sebagai pekerja EF berdasarkan divisi staf, yaitu: (1) guru lokal; (2) konsultan kursus lokal; (3) office boy lokal; and (4) orang tua murid sebagai konsumen yang statusnya tertinggi dalam dunia kerja. Konvergensi mencerminkan usaha guru native bahasa Inggris sebagai speaker dalam menurunkan gaya bahasa untuk beradaptasi dengan lawan bicara yang kemampuannya berbeda dalam memahami bahasa Inggris sebab bahasa pertama lawan bicara adalah bahasa Indonesia. Studi ini menggunakan teori akomodasi oleh Giles (1975), SPEAKING model oleh Hymes (1974), dan konteks sosial dalam bahasa, dimensi sosial oleh Holmes (1992). Analisis dalam studi ini berisi penjabaran dari bagaimana guru native bahasa Inggris mengkonvergensi bahasa mereka terhadap para pekerja local. Riset ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif dengan transkripsi orthographic yang dikembangkan oleh Gail Jefferson (Wray, Trott, Bloomer, Reay, & Butler, 1998; Litosseliti, 2010). Hasil dari studi ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam mengkonvergensi bahasa, pembicara memiliki pola yang sama dari: penggunaan intonasi yang tinggi; pertimbangan pola tata bahasa dalam percakapan yang pada dasarnya, tidak semua lawan bicara memahami pengginaan tata bahasa dalam bahasa Inggris; penggunaan medium verbal dan non-verbal dalam percakapan yaitu, gestur dan verbal fillers; penerapan penurunan kecepatan berbicara; penggunaan panjang ucapan yang normal pada kalimat-kalimat complex dan compound; dan penerapan pause per kata. Di samping itu, mereka cenderung menghindari penggunaan dimensi sosial dalam berbicara. Tiga skala formalitas, keintiman, dan status tidak mempengaruhi perubahan kode dan pengucapan pembicara. Konvergensi bahasa berdampak terhadap bahasa Inggris yang diketahui oleh baik pembicara maupun lawan bicara. Sesuai dengan teori yang ada, studi ini mengusulkan bahwa tujuan konvergensi bahasa yang dilakukan oleh pekerja migran adalah untuk: (1) membangun hubungan emosional antara pembicara dan lawan bicara yang menandai kebutuhan pemahaman yang seringnya dilakukan secara tidak sadar dalam integrasi atau identifikasi sosial; (2) mempersilahkan lawan bicara atau member lawan bicara rasa nyaman dalam percakapan; (3) memenuhi persyaratan yang ditafsirkan oleh pendengar atau lawan bicara; (4) membuat komunikasi lebih mudah dipahami oleh lawan bicara atau sebaliknya; (5) dan diterima secara sosial.   Kata kunci: teori akomodasi, ,konvergensi, tempat bekerja.   Abstract This study focuses on language convergence done by two migrant workers, British English teachers toward Indonesian or local co-workers in EF (English First) at Pakuwon Trade Centre, Surabaya. The local co-workers are defined as EF employers based on staff division, they are: (1) local teachers; (2) local course consultants; (3) local office boys; and (4) EF student’s parents as the consumers whose status is the highest in business world. The convergence reflects the British English teachers’ effort as the speakers in lowering speech to adapt the interlocutors’ different skills of English comprehension as their mother language is bahasa Indonesia. This study uses theories of accommodation theory proposed by Giles (1975), SPEAKING tongue model proposed by Hymes (1974), and social context in language, social dimension proposed by Holmes (1992). The analysis of this study consists of elaboration on how English native teachers converge their language toward local workers. This research uses descriptive qualitative method using the orthographical transcription developed by Gail Jefferson (Wray, Trott, Bloomer, Reay, & Butler, 1998; Litosseliti, 2010). The result shows that in converging the language, the speakers have the same patterns of: using high intonation; considerating grammar pattern in conversation that in fact, not all of the interlocutors understand the use of grammars in English; using verbal and non-verbal medium in conversation, that are gestures and verbal fillers; applying adjustment of speech rate; using normal utterance lengths of complex and compound sentences; and applying pause per words. Besides, they tend to avoid the use of social dimension in speaking. The three scales of formality, intimacy, and status do not influence the speakers’ change of code and pronunciation. In line with the theories, this study proposes that the purposes of language convergence done are to: (1) build emotional link between speaker and interlocutor that reflects the needs of comprehension often non-conscious for social integration or identification; (2) please the interlocutors or putting them at ease; (3) meet the interpreted requirements of the listener; (4) make the communication more understandable to the partner or not; (5) and get social approval.   Keywords: accommodation theory, convergence, workplace.

Abstract

Abstrak Sang anak biasanya mendapat kata pertama mereka dalam usia satu hingga tiga tahun. Banyak orang percaya bahwa di balik sukses seorang anak dalam mendapatkan kata pertama adalah ibunya. Tetapi, banyak diantara mereka tidak tahu seberapa jauh peran sang ibu dalam membantu sang anak meraih kata pertama. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk mengetahui secara pasti peran seorang ibu dan efeknya kepada dalam meraih bahasa pertamanya. Studi ini menggunakan qualitatif deskriptif untuk melihat sejauh mana ikut berperannya seorang ibu dan juga perkembangan dari sang anak ketika terlibat dalam sebuah percakapan dengan ibunya. Setelah melakukan identifikasi di percakapan dan menklasifikasi usia dari sang anak dengan observasi yang dalam dan menggunakan metode tingkatan pemerolehan bahasa pertama dari Crystal, penulis beranggapan bahwa sang anak mampu memperoleh kata pertamanya dari kebiasaan. Sedangkan sang ibu hanya memberikan support dari sang anak dan melihat sejauh mana perkembangan yang dibuat oleh sang anak dalam percakapan. Jadi,  dalam kasus ini penulis beranggapan bahwa sang ibu merupakan sistem pendukung pemerolehan bahasa        Kata kunci: Peran, Pemerolehan bahasa,  Ibu, Anak     Abstract The child usually acquires their first word at age of one until three years old. Many people believe that behind the child’s success in acquire their first word is his or her mother. But, most people did not know how far does the role of mother to help the child in acquire their first word. The purpose of this study is to know what does the exact role of the mother and also the effect to her child in acquire their first word. This study is uses descriptive qualitative to see how far does the mother’s involvement and also the development of the child in his or her conversation with the mother. after identified the conversation with their mother and classified the age of children by deep observation and method from crystal’s stages of language acquisition, the writer found that the child can develop in acquire new word in behaviour way, the mother then can only provide the support for their child and see the improvement that the child has make. Abstrak Penelitian ini pada dasarnya mempermasalahkan cara slogan dari merek-merek terkenal untuk dapat bertahan dan bahkan berkembang luas karena keberhasilan merek tidak bisa dilepaskan dari slogannya. Slogan memiliki dampak untuk membuat merek menjadi terkenal seperti yang didaftar oleh advergize.com. Oleh karena itu, sangat penting untuk melihat slogan-slogan sebagai bagian penting dari branding, terutama jika dilihat dari wacana dibalik slogan-slogan tersebut. Deborah Schiffrin menjelaskan wacana melalui penandanya; bahasa (struktur), makna (semantik/bahasa kiasan) dan konteks sosial, yang kemudian dapat dipermasalahkan menjadi tiga pertanyaan; (1) bagaimana bentuk kalimat yang digunakan dalam slogan lima merek yang ada di website advergize.com? (2) bagaimana makna ditemukan dalam slogan lima merek yang ada di website advergize.com? dan (3) Bagaimana konteks sosial membentuk wacana di slogan lima merek yang ada di website advergize.com? Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dan data yang diambil berasal dari lima merek yang didaftar oleh website. Data diklasifikasikan dan kemudian dianalisis. Berdasarkan apa yang peneliti menemukan dalam analisis ini, slogan-slogan dari merek-merek terkenal di atas memiliki tiga penanda seperti yang telah diuraikan secara teoritis dan ketiganya saling terhubung satu sama lain; linguistik, makna, dan konteks sosial. Akhirnya, ditemukan bahwa penanda wacana dapat mempengaruhi keberhasilan slogan karena di balik slogan-slogan, ada kekuatan dan kekuasaan yang mengacu pada wacana di balik itu. Kata kunci: slogan, penanda wacana, bahasa, makna dan konteks sosial.     Abstract This study basically problematizes the way slogans of famous brands can survive and even expand broadly because the success of brands cannot be released from its slogans. The slogans have the impact to make the brands to be famous as it is enlisted by advergize.com. Therefore, it is very important to see slogans as the major part of branding, especially if it is seen from the discourse behind the slogans. Deborah Schiffrin clarifies discourse through its markers; language (structure), meaning (semantic/figurative language) and social context. Thus, it can be problematized in to three questions; (1) how is the form of sentence used in the top five brands’ slogan on website advergize.com? (2) how is the meaning found in the top five brands’ slogan on website advergize.com? and (3) How does the social context form the discourse in the top five brands’ slogan on website advergize.com? The method that is used qualitative and the data are taken occasionally from the top five brands listed by the website. The data are classified and then it is analyzed. Based on what the researcher finds in this analysis, the slogans of the top famous brands own three markers as it has been elaborated theoretically and those three are connected to each other; they are linguistics, meaning, and social contexts. Finally, it is found that discourse markers can affect to the success of the slogans because behind the slogans there is power and the power refers to the discourses behind it. Abstract

Abstrak Didalam setiap interaksi, orang-orang selalu melakukan sebuah komunikasi dengan orang lain. Beberapa orang beranggapan bahwa terdapat sebuah komunikasi yang membutuhkan pemahaman yang lebih baik serta perlakuan tertentu seperti halnya dalam sebuah negosiasi. Dengan kata lain, terdapat dua komunikasi yaitu komunikasi biasa dan tidak biasa. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk meneliti tipe-tipe strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh para karakter kepada para pembajak di dalam sebuah negosiasi. Ketika berkomunikasi di sebuah negosiasi, mereka mengaplikasikan strategi kesopanan dalam rangka mencapai tujuan tertentu dan alasan tertentu.  Salah satu tujuannya adalah mencoba untuk menyelesaikan konflik dengan baik-baik diantara pihak yang bersitegang melalui negosiasi. Didalam penyelesaian konflik tersebut, para karakter  menggunakan gaya konflik komunikasi yang cocok dalam negosiasi melalui strategi kesopanan. Tujuan lain dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengungkap fitur-fitur yang terdapat dalam gaya konflik komunikasi dimana hal tersebut membawa keberhasilan komunikasi itu. Disisi lain, penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang mendeskripsikan ucapan-ucapan yang ada di negosiasi untuk menganalisa strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh para karakter. Pengumpulan data yang digunakan berasal dari pengamatan pada ucapan-ucapan di dalam situasi negosiasi. Data yang dianalisis melewati proses pengkategorian, analisis dan diskusi. Terdapat 3 ucapan mengindikasikan adanya bebarapa gaya konflik komunikasi yang melekat pada strategi kesopanan yang memberikan pengaruh. Hal ini diakibatkan karena para karakter memberikan keberhasilan pada komunikasi disaat menggunakan strategi tersebut kepada para pembajak. Kata Kunci: negosiasi, strategi kesopanan, gaya komunikasi konflik.   Abstract In everyday interaction, people are always having a communication with others. It is some said that there is a requirement for better understanding and certain treatment for particular communication such as negotiation. On the other word, there is an usual and extraordinary from various kind of communication. The aim of this study is to reveal type of politeness strategies used by the characters to the hijcakers in the negotiation. When people communicate in a negotiation, they are apply strategy of politeness to attain particular purposes for particular reasons. One of the purpose in negotiation is trying to resolve the conflict between the parties in a good ending. In the way of resolve the conflict, the characters are select the appropriate conflict communication style in the middle of the negotiation which is occured in a certain situation such negotiation through the strategy of politeness. This study also aims to hit upon the features which are having affections to bring a successful communication. In addition, this study uses a descriptive qualitative research to describe the negotiation utterances to analyze the politeness strategy used by the characters. The data are collected from the observation on the utterances in negotiation situation in the movie of Captain Phillip. The data are analyzed through the process of categorizing, analyzing and discussing. From 12 data, the result of the study shows that there are 3 utterances which are analyzed in types of conflict communication style through strategies of politeness give influences. it is because the characters bring successful communication while using those strategy to the hijackers.
