Abstract

This research is based on the economic situation faced by fishing communities, whose income is unstable due to seasonal influences, weather fluctuations, ocean currents, and the number of fish caught. This situation has prompted fishing families to develop various strategies to maintain and improve their economic situation. This study aims to analyze strategies to improve the economic situation of fishermen families in the tourist area of Gandoriahh Beach, Pariaman. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach, collecting data through field observations, in-depth interviews, documents, and field notes. The research sample consisted of two fishermen and the wife of one of them, who is also a trader in the Gandoriahh Beach tourist area. The results of the study showed that fisher families implemented various economic strategies, including diversifying sources of income through side jobs, involving family members in economic activities, and managing finances through savings. In addition, the existence of the Gandoriah Beach tourist area has provided new economic opportunities for coastal communities through trade and tourism services. However, these economic benefits are not evenly distributed due to the decline in the number of visitors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These results show that fishing communities have a dynamic ability to adapt to economic instability in coastal areas.

Abstract

Child care in fishing communities is closely related to economic conditions, traditions related to the sea, as well as patterns of life and cooperation between family members and residents in coastal areas. This study aims to explain how fishing families in Gandoriah Beach, Pariaman take care of their children and understand their changing views on important things for children's future due to the influence of modernization. A descriptive qualitative method was used in this study, which included in-depth interviews with fishermen and their wives and children, community leaders, and junior high school teachers in the Gandoriah Beach area. The results of the study show that most parents apply a democratic approach in parenting. This parenting style involves flexibility in discipline and involvement of children in fisheries activities as a means to introduce a work culture. Nevertheless, children are not forced to make the fishing profession their job in the future. The primary role in day-to-day care is usually carried out by the mother, but supervision of the child also involves the collective support of family members, friends, and the surrounding community. Modernization, the development of formal education, and the use of digital devices have begun to change the aspirations and patterns of interaction of fisher children with their environment. This has an impact on reducing the number of young generations who choose to continue the traditional fishing profession. These findings reinforce the idea that child-rearing patterns in coastal areas are dynamic processes influenced both by local community traditions and by the impact of broader social and economic changes.

Abstract

Marketing activities of fishermen's catches are very important in the sustainability of the coastal community fishery community. This study aims to understand how the marketing process of fishermen's catches in Gandoriah Beach, Pariaman, West Sumatra, includes the process of selling fish, distribution of catches, pricing systems, and the relationship between fishermen and fish traders. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques in the form of observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The research informants consisted of 2 fishermen and 1 fish trader who were directly involved in the marketing activities of the catch. The results of this study show that most fishermen sell their catch to agents or collectors first before being remarketed by fish traders to consumers. The determination of fish prices is influenced by weather conditions, the number of catches, the type of fish, and market demand. In addition, the relationship between subscriptions and capital dependence between fishermen and agents also affects the marketing process of their catches. Erratic sea conditions also have an impact on the number of catches and also affect fishermen's income and smooth fish marketing. Therefore, marketing activities of fishermen's catches at Gandoriah Beach are not only related to the buying and selling process, but also involve socio-economic relationships between fishery business actors.

Abstract

This study examines the cultural conception of the expression of love language in interactions between parents and children in Minangkabau families living in Solok City. Using qualitative methods with a Life History approach as well as data collection techniques carried out through participatory observation, in-depth interviews, and literature studies. The informants were selected using purposive sampling, with key informants comprising nine families and ordinary informants, namely traditional leaders. The focus of this research is to understand how parents express affection for children in daily life, a practice constructed and influenced by Minangkabau cultural values. The results of the study show that the expression of parental affection in Minangkabau families is more predominantly manifested through nonverbal forms in real daily actions, such as attention, supervision, help, togetherness, and involvement in children's lives. Despite the differences in intensity between families, the informant pointed out that the expression of affection is firmly rooted in traditional and religious values as part of the Minangkabau cultural conception. The expression of affection is reflected in parenting, and communication styles in the family. In addition, there is a shift in the way of expressing affection between the old generation which emphasizes real actions and the firmness of moral values, and the current generation which prioritizes the expression of feelings and emotional closeness.

Abstract

Rituals are not merely religious practices but also cultural mechanisms through which Indigenous communities construct, transmit, and preserve ecological knowledge. Among the Kerinci people of Sumatra, Indonesia, the Asyeikritual has long been recognized as an important cultural tradition; however, its role as a Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) system has received limited scholarly attention. This study aims to examine how the Asyeik ritual represents ecological knowledge, facilitates its intergenerational transmission, and contributes to environmental conservation and disaster mitigation. Employing an ethnographic approach, data were collected through participant observation and in-depth interviews with ritual specialists (guriu or salih balian) across several customary communities in Kerinci between 2024 and 2026. The findings demonstrate that ritual materials—including diverse plant species, animals, water, and other natural elements—are selected based on ecological characteristics rather than solely ritual requirements. These species function as ecological indicators reflecting the health of forests, rivers, wetlands, springs, and other environmental landscapes while simultaneously embodying symbolic meanings that regulate human-environment relationships. Furthermore, myths and ritual symbols surrounding sacred ecological spaces operate as cultural institutions that discourage environmental exploitation and reinforce collective responsibilities toward ecosystem conservation. Consequently, the Asyeik ritual serves not only as a spiritual practice but also as a mechanism for transmitting ecological knowledge, strengthening community resilience, and sustaining socio-ecological balance. This study contributes to anthropological discussions by demonstrating that ritual functions as an institution for preserving Traditional Ecological Knowledge, thereby extending interpretive approaches to ritual toward broader debates on human-environment relations, Indigenous knowledge, and biocultural conservation.
