Abstract

This article will argue that intuition-based description by native speakers to some extent may not be accurate in depicting what people really say and think about the language. Since the problem of learning a second language is essentially lexical, the introduction of machine-readable text corpora has been seen as an alternative for describing lexical behaviour of a natural language and media which second language teachers and learners can benefit from (see Fox, 1988, Willis, 1990, Francis, 1993). The corpus programs such as Concordancing, Sentence, and Collocation are capable of providing data of lexical properties, and thus, overcoming the failings of intuition. In addition, it also helps learners and teachers understand the characteristics of lexicon, various meanings of the word and acquire its syntactic properties

Abstract

This article discusses a part of findings of a study performed by Kumaidi and associates. The issue discussed in this article mainly focused on the aplication of Rasch model in analyzing data across classrooms and demonstrated the worth of the analysis. Data used in this article were responses of SMUN students in answering tests of English as an end of first quarter (Cawu I) test. The results of the study sugget that Rasch approach might be implemented to plot items from different classes in one single metric scale. This single metric would be useful to monitor student's progress in learning. It is suggested that the testing procedures be implemented which give rise a multilevel testing for end quarter tests in the future

Abstract

High quality of instructional design is needed to reach high instructional quality. It should be designed based on the assumption that different types of conditions and learner outcomes required different methods. In fact, this assumption has been ignored by the social studies teachers. It brings on low quality of instruction. Component Display Theory (CDT) model gives a set of instructional prescriptions based on the link and match of condition variables and those of the methods. CDT is coming up to overcome and keep the quality of instruction. The result of this research and development proved that instructional design being developed based on CDT model is better than those of the conventional methods.
