Abstract

The present study is concerned with verbal strategies applied by doctorate students in expressing their disagreements during discussions in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes. The study collected data from fourteen classroom discussions among the doctorate English Program students speaking in English as a foreign language. Among the five broad strategies applied, aggravating a disagreement seems to be an undesired strategy, and, acknowledging peers and asserting vulnerability during disagreements are the more favored strategies. Hence, the results of the study strengthen Viechnicki's (1997) findings that intellectual figure is fundamental to the graduate students that needs to be protected

Abstract

This study is intended to examine the influence of the democratic climate of classrooms on student engagement and learning outcomes in order to find out a more adequate model of learning in Civic Education classrooms. A model is developed for testing with data obtained from a sample of 930 students from schools in North Sulawesi. Prior to the analysis, scales are analysed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and are calibrated using Rasch Measurement Model Analysis (RMMA). The analysis shows that the trimmed model (Model B) is slightly more coherent and simpler than the hypothesised model (Model A). However, both models indicate that the democratic climate of Civic Education classrooms has significant effects on student engagement, student civic knowledge and interpretation skill, and student concepts of citizenship.

Abstract

The present study reports the actual strategy use of good readers when they face hindrance in the form of unfamiliar words. Eight undergraduates majoring in English at Surabaya State University performed think-aloud while reading two texts to find out how they coped with such difficulties. The verbal protocol indicated that half of the participants mainly relied on a bilingual (English-Indonesian) dictionary to attack unfamiliar words, and only one of them preferred to use a monolingual (English-English) one. Two of them employed context cues to infer the meaning of the words, while one participant combined the use of context cues and a monolingual dictionary as the major strategy. All but one of the participants skipped some of lexical items whose meaning was unknown to them, especially when these words did not have a key contribution to the meaning of the whole text.

Abstract

This study analyzes the extent to which educational backgrounds and (the length of) teaching experience are attributable to the teaching performance of teachers of physical (sport) education across the sub-districts of Batu, Pujon, Kasembon, Junrejo, Bumiaji, and Ngantang. The results of descriptive analysis and ANOVA show that teaching experience is not significantly influential to the teaching performance of the teachers. The teaching performance is significantly affected by the teachers’ background education or training. Teachers with SPG training are by far different from those trained at SGO/SMOA, PGSD, and CP (Crash Program) in their teaching performance. The latter perform better.

Abstract

This cross-sectional study aimed to explain the epithet of verb performance within the syntactic properties gained by the students in their essays, i.e. (1) tense, (2) aspect, (3) voice, and (4) mood. The data had been gathered from the 50 samples for each graded level by using a proportional random sampling technique. The processes of soft data attempted to search the epithet of verb performance through the equilibriums between accuracy and inaccuracy. As a result, the research findings indicated that epithet of the students' verb performance was 12.06%, including tense (27.83 %), aspect (21.51%), voice (-35.72%), and mood (34.63%).
