Abstract

Along with the establishment of the national policy which acknowledges English as the first foreign language taught in schools, writing has been part of the teaching and learning of English in various levels of education. Accordingly, many research studies on EFL writing in Indonesia have been reported and practices in the teaching of writing outlined in various types of publications. However, no publication has offered a comprehensive synthesis of the findings of those studies and teaching experiences. In response to the need for providing an overall analysis as such, this article discusses the state of the art of the teaching of EFL writing in the Indonesian context. Taking into account the historical development of teaching methodology and theoretical framework of research on writing in a wider context, this article discusses current development of EFL writing research and teaching, and elaborates the future trends of this area of investigation.

The students’ achievement was measured using a test. Computation in the forms of percentage and average score was carried out to show the results of the data analysis. The results demonstrate that 1) the students’ scientific attitude in Cycle I was quantified as 60.69%, in Cycle II 71.16%, in Cycle III 80.77%, 2) the lecturer’s teaching activities were getting better as the cycles progressed, and 3) the students’ achievement in Cycle I was 5.92, in Cycle II 6.71, and in Cycle III 7.62. The results show that the application of Cooperative Learning Approach can improve the quality of students’ learning activities and the students’ learning achievement.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop an instrument for measuring students self-confidence toward Mathematics. The instrument was tried out twice to 150 students of the faculty of engineering, Universitas Negeri Jakarta (UNJ). The factor analysis produces eight factors extracted from the data obtained by exploratory method Principal Components Analysis (PCA), which was in accordance with the theoretical estimated factors. Theta reliability was used to determine the reliability of the instrument (Q = 0.7929). Theta internal consistency obtained was Q = 0.7177. It can be concluded that the Questionnaire measuring self-confidence toward Mathematics developed has an appropriate construct validity and internal consistency. Further try-out is still needed to standardize this instrument which can then be used to measure students self-confidence toward Mathematics in wider areas.

Abstract

The purposes of this study was to examine the effectiveness of Metacognitive Strategies in Cooperative Learning (MS-CL), compared to Metacognitive Strategies (MS), in genetics learning. A quasi-experiment design was applied in this study, involving 92 out of 230 third-year students of SMAN 6 Surabaya. Data were collected by means of achievement test and were then analyzed by analyses of covariance. The results indicated that the thinking skills of the students employing MS-CL were low, but their scores on genetics exam were not significantly different from those employing MS. However, the MS-CL was found to develop students colaborative skills. The students with high ability showed higher thinking skill and higher score on genetics exam than students with low ability.
