Abstract

This project sought to explore the perception about processes used by four teachers in Australia and Indonesia on their use of controversial discussions in developing critical thinking in everyday teaching. The comparative case study data were collected using guided interviews and analyzed by a thematic analysis. Analysis was validated by feedback from the subjects. The research found that there were variations in Indonesian and Australian teachers' perceptions about developing critical thinking in students through discussing controversial issues. Adequate pre-service and in-service training was necessary to provide teachers with the confidence and skill to open up discussion of difficult and divisive community issues

Abstract

This article argues that plagiarism in Indonesia exists due to some reasons. The reasons range from the requirements on the part of the students to adhere to uniformity in terms of thesis format to failure on the part of the government to effectively enforce a regulation dealing with plagiarism. Anecdotal observations as a student in one Indonesian university will give color to the discussion throughout this article. A recommendation to subdue plagiarism in Indonesia will conclude the article.

Abstract

This article discusses the thinking process of pseudo covariational reasoning in constructing graphs of dynamic events. The reasoning is examined using the VL2P framework (Vinner, Lithner, Leron, and Pape). The thinking process of one student taking Calculus II course was analysed, followed with interviews, revealing that at the low level, the pseudo covariational reasoning was close to Vinner’s pseudo analytic; that higher level of reasoning was equal to Lithner’s Establish Experience; that the reasoning was dominantly affected by the first process of Leron’s Dual Process Theory; and that it took place when direct translation was involved consistent with Pape’s Direct Translation Approach. These suggest that process view be emphasized in mathematics teaching and learning.

Abstract

It is taken for granted that students' vocabulary can be developed to a certain degree and its development can be done through a number of ways. This study investigated the effectiveness of linguistic approach in developing EFL learners' vocabulary. 50 participants were involved in the study. They were divided into experimental and controlled groups, consisting of 25 students. The experimental group was taught using linguistic method while the controlled was instructed with a conventional method. The experiment was carried out in the classroom setting and lasted for one semester. The two groups were evaluated by means of pre-and post-test. The results show that the experimental group performed better than the controlled. The value of t-test is bigger than the value of t-table, and assessment of student' performance level, by the help of two native speakers, shows significant development; it developed from marginal to modest or between modest and competent, or from basic level to intermediate with the mean difference of 1.76.

A Critical Moment in The Teaching Profession: a Discourse of Tensions Yazid Basthomi

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.17977/um048v14i32007p135-139

Abstract

This article presents some interpretive understanding of a critical moment in my teaching profession. Different from the widely conducted Classroom Action Research (CAR) which tends to be focused on the very practice of teaching-learning activities in the classroom, the article refers to post-activity evaluative comments from students as data to start the discussion. The students giving the evaluative comments were participants of my course units of Speaking I and Discourse Analysis, Under-graduate Program, English Department, Faculty of Letters, State University of Malang, Indonesia. In the light of Ortega’s concept about the “exuberances and deficiencies” of utterances and the notion of “the said and the unsaid” of discourse, the article interpretively assesses the tensions instead of unidirectional-deterministic understanding of the seemingly-simple-yet-complex teaching-learning activities. The article also argues that students’ evaluative feedback as discourse bears paradoxes, indeterminacy, and tentativeness. The corollary is that teachers need not be impulsive and, instead, need to be open to students’ evaluative feedback, be it positive or negative.

Abstract

The present article reports on a research project investigating teachers' level of abstraction ability, commitment, and teaching skills. The research was also aimed to see the relationship between different frequencies of supervision on teachers and the teachers' teaching ability. The population included teachers at Primary Schools, Junior High Schools, Senior High Schools, and Vocational Schools in Malang. The sample, consisting of 20 schools and 84 teachers, was selected using cluster random sampling. The data, collected using questionnaire and through observations, were treated employing descriptive, correlational, and regression analyses. The research found that the teachers had an adequate level of abstraction ability. They also had sound commitment and teaching skills. The results also disclose that the most frequently used supervision techniques were collaborative and directive techniques. With regard to the frequency of the supervision, it was found to be adequate. The supervision frequency also correlated positively with the teachers' teaching skills.
