Abstract

Corruption is often viewed as a social disease representing an endemic problem. The corruption in Indonesia is seriously increasing due to the slow law process of corruption, the non-discouraging effect of the corruption punishment, the easily-spread corruption behaviour, the corruption rooted from traditional values, and the non-transparent governance. Preventive and corrective actions should be taken to deal with corruption, one of which is through public learning.

Abstract

This study was aimed at finding the best model to explain pupil academic attainment in learning social studies. The data came from pupils learning Social Studies at grade 3 and 4 of primary schools. The structural equation model contained 2 exogenous constructs–attitudes toward school and locus of control–and 2 endogenous constructs–self-concept and academic achievement. It was confirmed that the academic self-concept and achievement related to each other and both were influenced by attitudes toward school and internal locus of control. The model was fitting differently for different grade.

Abstract

This essay argues that literacy is of paramount importance in schools, be it for the purpose of students’ completion of their studies, of their study career, or of their life-long education. To these ends, literacy necessitates serious, systematic, and contextual undertakings. This article will selectively out-line the views of a number of experts and critically review some research findings in the area, which, by and large, advocate the significance of efforts to improve the quality of literacy. The paper will also provide various examples of how literacy might be enhanced, for instance, by administering literacy hour and whole school literacy. An argument that scientific activities can serve as bases for the im-provement of students’ literacy will conclude the essay.

Abstract

Metaphor can be a semi-technical vocabulary in ESP. In fact, it is abundant in all branches of science. Being a significant part of human conceptual system, it plays a basic role in the imaginative cognitive mechanism, which is common not only in daily activities but also in scientific inquiry. Although most ESP materials have been developed based on careful research and needs analysis on lexicon, metaphor has been ignored in the teaching of ESP. Lexically-based language teaching, however, underlines the importance of metaphor in ESP.
