Abstract

This study focuses on the translation and captioning techniques which are applied in the English Subtitle of Merantau film. Drawing on Hervey and Higgins’ (1992) concept of compensation techniques and Karamitroglou’s (1998) captioning guidelines, the study finds that the translator mostly uses Compensation in Kind technique to compensate for the translation loss. This choice may be due to the translator’s ability to find the equal expression in target language that is more acceptable. It is also found that the translated script has fulfilled the standards of captioning. Keywords: Compensation Techniques, Translation Loss, Captioning, Equal Expression

Abstract

News tends to be manipulated by some people to control over other people because news shapes publics opinions. Nowadays people can share news content easily in internet because internet becomes space where people can connect, communicate, and share everything easily. In line with that, this present research examined the representation of Muhammad Daming Sunusi concerning his controversial statement “women enjoy being raped” as evidenced in Indonesian Online Newspapers by using Sociosemantic approach from van Leeuwen (2008). This research employed descriptive qualitative method to describe the representation and its significance. The collected data were 6 online articles taken from Detik, Kompas, and Tribunnews. The data were analyzed in the unit of words, phrases, and sentences to reveal the representation of Muhammad Daming Sunusi concerning his controversial statement. This research disclosed that, according to the text, Muhammad Daming Sunusi was represented as the one who should be responsible of his statement and he was also represented in a negative way since his case was considered as an insult to the rape victims. Hence, by sociosemantic and context analysis, the research revealed that Detik, Kompas, and Tribunnews had the same pattern and thought in representing Muhammad Daming Sunusi. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Sociosemantic, Van Leeuwen, Representation, Muhammad Daming Sunusi

Abstract

The present study seeks to investigate the representations of Rasyid Rajasa regarding his highway accident in tvOne and RCTI news reports and the significance of the representations. This study employs a qualitative design with some measures of descriptive statistics and a perspective of CDA proposed by Fairclough (1995). The data include the selected four news reports of Rasyid Rajasa’s trial taken from youtube.com. The analysis uses theories of Transitivity and Thematization of Halliday (1994) in revealing the representations which signify underlying ideologies. The study reveals that Rasyid Rajasa is represented as guilty, a victim and as favored. From those representations, four ideologies are derived, namely democracy, capitalism, “fairness” in expressions and partiality in expressions. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Transitivity, Thematization, Social Actor, Representation.

Abstract

This research aims to investigate the major participants in Bambang Widjojanto’s case, how they are represented, and the meanings can be constructed from the representation. The data were taken from five headline news relating to the topic in online newspaper, The Jakarta Post. A Critical Discourse Analysis, especially Van Dijk’s framework, Sociogognitive Approach (2009) focusing on microstructure level has been used to analyze the data. The analysis reveals that there are two major participants in Bambang Widjojanto’s case, Bambang Widjojanto and the Police. The Jakarta Post generally represents Bambang Widjojanto positively, while the Police is represented negatively. Bambang Widjojanto is mostly represented as recipient and the Police is mostly represented as producer, on the other hand. It can be assumed that The Jakarta Post intends to convey that Bambang Widjojanto is a positive recipient or a right/good ‘victim’, while the Police is a negative producer or a wrong/bad ‘actor’. It shows that there is a polarization in representing the participants. This polarization signifies that the Police misused their power over Bambang Widjojanto. Moreover, those representations of the major participants can affect the representation of the institution in which they work. Keywords: The Jakarta Post, representation, CDA, sosicocognitive, microstructure, Bambang Widjojanto

Abstract

This research paper aims to make meaning of normalcy in Ken Kesey’s novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The meaning of normalcy is constructed from characters who are considered as not normal. Therefore, being not normal will be analyzed by Foucault’s idea of madness (1964) as the framework. In particular, the research analyzes textual evidences which indicate the aspects of madness. By employing a narrative approach in a qualitative method which emphasizes on the analysis of the characters in the novel, the finding reveals two main points. First, that normalcy means obedience. In this case, being obedient means being submissive toward the ward’s rules. Second, the idea of normalcy is determined by those who have power. From the analysis, it can be concluded that normalcy is not a fixed construction, it depends on those who hold the authority. Keywords: Aleph, Paulo Coelho, journey in literature, life meaning, life purpos

Abstract

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) directed by James Gunn presents a set of heroes that are different from the majorities of the other heroes, especially in terms of how they develop into heroes. The study examines the hero construction in Guardians of the Galaxy by using Campbell’s (2004) theory of hero construction as the theoretical guidelines. The qualitative method is used in this study to gain a deeper understanding of the construction. The findings show that the heroes are constructed in ways similar to the stages in Campbell’s theoretical proposition. The constructions are also very much influenced by external factors that the heroes meet. From the construction, the heroes in Guardians of the Galaxy are shown to develop from characters devoid of moral values, instead of characters with noble morals as frequently shown by the majorities of the other heroes. The heroes in Guardians of the Galaxy are also portrayed to have more human qualities in their construction which makes them more rounded. Repair Strategies in Online Chat: A Conversation Analysis Ari Tiara

Abstract

The study aims to: (1) investigate the types of repair strategies, (2) identify the techniques of repair initiation, and (3) discover the possible purposes of particular types of repair that are employed by the participants in a group chat namely Calterone 33. A group’s chat room which consists of 32 participants was chosen to explore the repair strategies. The dialogues contain repair were analysed by using Schegloff, Sacks, and Jefferson’s theory (1977) and Finegan’s theory (2008). The results of the present study reveal that the participants in Calterone 33 used all types of repair strategies in which other-initiated self-repair appears as the most frequently occurs (52.5%). It was affected by the topic selection from the participants with different knowledge which triggered the recipient to initiate a repair. Three techniques of repair from Finegan (2008) were found in group’s chat room, with an asking question technique as the most applied. It was used as the participants urge the explanation of the trouble source from the current speaker. Another technique was discovered in the chat, namely giving possible understanding. Repair strategies were used in online chat for some functions such as to get a further explanation, to clarify a thing, and to rectify the mistyping in the utterance. This study contradicts Zaferanieh (2004) and Meredith and Stokoe (2013) for its claim that SISR appears as the most applied in online chat; nevertheless, it supports Schonfeldt and Golato (2003), Sato (2012), Kendrick’s (2015) study about the use of SISR and other-initiation in conversation. Those findings indicate that the participants in Calterone 33 tend to initiate repair from others’ mistakes which affected by different understanding of the topic. They use other-initiation in order to get an explanation of the trouble source. Keywords: conversation analysis, repair strategy, online chat
The Portrayal of Antihero in Mario Puzo’s The Godfather (1969) Mohamad Sidiq Femy Hadirojaq

Show Abstract | Download Original | Original Source | Check in Google Scholar | DOI: 10.17509/psg.v7i2.21277

Abstract

This study aims to discover how the antihero is portrayed by Michael Corleone in The Godfather (1969) novel by Mario Puzo. The data were in the forms of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogues between the characters in the novel, which were then categorized into four types of characterization according to Rimmon-Kenan (2003), namely act, appearance, speech, and environment. Furthermore, the data were framed by conflictual points while identifying certain events and narrations that are considered as the portrayal of an antihero using the theory of antihero by Wilson et al. (2013). The data were then analyzed through a descriptive qualitative method to obtain deeper explanation and understanding. The result shows that the novel portrays Michael Corleone as an antihero for having the identical characteristics of an antihero proposed by Wilson et al. (2013), namely empathy, humility, self-awareness, flexibility, and an ability to acknowledge the uncertainty. Therefore, it is found that the characteristics of an antihero are not entirely dominated by negative traits as argued by Pangestu (2017), Jati (2018), and Garcia (2013). An antihero may have some negative traits, but they also have some positive ones. The findings of this study also indicate that the original antihero is the antithesis of a hero because an antihero portrays human nature in general. Keywords: antihero, portrayal, characterization

Abstract

Legitimation is one form ofthe social actionswhichis often done eventhough it isprobably less recognized. The present study examines the legitimation construction by the Regent of Garut and also the ideologies underlying the legitimation. It uses van Leeuwen’s (2008) framework regarding discursive construction of legitimation under the theory of Critical Discourse Analysis. This study is largely qualitative, but some quantification is employed to support the description. The collected data are in the form of statements delivered by Regent of Garut related to his unregistered marriage to a young girl. The data are analyzed in the unit of clause to reveal the legitimation construction in the texts. This study finds that from four major types of legitimation asserted by van Leeuwen (2008),only three types of legitimation are evidenced in the texts, i.e. rationalization (44.44%), authorization (44.44%), and moral evaluation (11.11%). Hence, the Regent of Garut’s actions in the texts are strongly legitimized through the logical explanation to support the unregistered marriage, supported by referring to high status as the basis of the actions, and the reference to moral value of humanity to avoid adultery. The ideologies underlying the legitimation are feudalism and masculinism. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Legitimation, Regent Of Garut, Unregistered Marriage, Ideology.
