Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the representation of male and female characters in the three short stories of Cerita Pendek tentang Cerita Cinta Pendek and revealing hidden meanings embedded in the representations by identifying the process type choices. This study employs a qualitative method and transitivity analysis proposed by Fairclough’s three-dimensional approach (1989) and Halliday’s transitivity (2004). Based on the analysis, all six process types of transitivity are embedded to male and female characters in which females have the highest number. It means that the short stories tend to represent male characters as a more passive participant while female characters as a more active and powerful participant. This study also finds that the female characters are still victimized by the male characters sexually and violently. The study suggests that the author intended to openly discuss the sexuality issue in Indonesian contexts from females’ perspective. Abstract

In its early emergence, the theories of masculinity are often associated with men, then female masculinity theories established and shifted the traditional notion of masculinity concept. This paper is intended to scrutinize the portrayal of masculinity in a major female character in a Joel Coen’s 1998 film entitled The Big Lebowski. Female masculinity is chosen as the main topic considering the shift of gender notions in these past few years using the theory proposed by Judith Halberstam (1998). In order to determine whether the characterization of the main object of this paper portrays masculinity, masculinity characteristics theory presented by Levant (1995) and film theory advanced by Amy Villarejo (2007) are also employed in this study. Using the theories mentioned previously, this paper used the dialogues, a number of mise en scene aspects, namely properties, costumes, hair do and makeup, and also cinematography aspects such as camera shots, angles and frames. The data were collected by taking notes on the character;s masculinity traits throughout the film. It is found that the focused character is depicted to have some masculinity traits through her confidence, emotions hiding, the absence of intimacy in sex. Self-reliant, strength, aggression, power, and domination. Thus, this paper proves that masculinity can also be performed with an absence of male body form. Abstract

Music video is a media of communication between the musicians and their listener or viewers that conveys message or represents the ideas in a form of images, lyrics and music. This study investigates the way ideological representation of globalism is represented in 2+2=5 and No Surprises music videos. The theoretical framework employs in this research is Barthes’s (1977) semiotic theory of orders signification which focuses on first order signification (denotation) and second order signification (connotation) of the visual elements of music videos. In addition, this study employs Goodwin’s (1992) theory of music video to analyze the key features of music video. The findings of the investigation show that globalism is represented through the lyrics and the visual images in the two music videos. The lyrics analysis shows that the narrative story in 2+2=5 music video signifies public mind control and anger to the totalitarian government. While in No Surprises music video, the narrative story signifies the modern society, an absolute power of the corrupt government, the hopeless and powerless feelings of the lower class society. In the visual analysis, the findings of the investigation show that there are some similarities and differences in the way of illustrating the ideology of globalism in 2+2=5 and No Surprises music videos. The similarities are represented through the use of the symbolic visual style, the use of black and white color saturations and the amplifying relationship between the lyrics and visual. Meanwhile, the differences are represented through the use of warm (red) color saturation that signifies agitation and anger and the intertextual references. Whereas in No Surprises, the use of close up frame size that signifies emotion and the use of cool (blue) color saturation represent the way of illustrating globalism. Keywords: Ideology, Representation, Globalism, Music Video

Abstract

Besides entertaining, children’s literature is expected to stimulate children’s understanding about particular values in real life and contributes to their development and needs. Due to this importance, many stories for children are delivered through realistic fiction. This paper thus aimed at investigating a child character’s development in realistic fiction and identifying the contributions of focalization to the main character’s development by using Bal’s narratology (2009) as the main framework. To analyze data in the form of written texts, qualitative method with descriptive analysis was applied. The results showed that the main character developed through four key narrative events and different focalization. Both were examined to explicate the dynamic changes in his personalities and attitudes. The development was also contributed by the six characters’ focalization which mostly revealed the shifts of direct and indirect speech, and the cognitive and perceptual views. This means that R.J. Palacio’s Wonder is successful in portraying a realistic fiction picture of a deformed child. In consequence, it shows that multiple focalization opens horizon to different perspectives which is important in children’s literature (Nikolajeva, 2002).Keywords: Children’s Literature, Character Development, NarratologyNews tends to be manipulated by some people to control over other people because news shapes publics opinions. Nowadays people can share news content easily in internet because internet becomes space where people can connect, communicate, and share everything easily. In line with that, this present research examined the representation of Muhammad Daming Sunusi concerning his controversial statement “women enjoy being raped” as evidenced in Indonesian Online Newspapers by using Sociosemantic approach from van Leeuwen (2008). This research employed descriptive qualitative method to describe the representation and its significance. The collected data were 6 online articles taken from Detik, Kompas, and Tribunnews. The data were analyzed in the unit of words, phrases, and sentences to reveal the representation of Muhammad Daming Sunusi concerning his controversial statement. This research disclosed that, according to the text, Muhammad Daming Sunusi was represented as the one who should be responsible of his statement and he was also represented in a negative way since his case was considered as an insult to the rape victims. Hence, by sociosemantic and context analysis, the research revealed that Detik, Kompas, and Tribunnews had the same pattern and thought in representing Muhammad Daming Sunusi.

Abstract

In order to explore the issue of identity construction of an adolescent character in Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore, this research uses Nikolajeva’s (2003) theory on implicit characterization and Trites’s (2000) theory on identity construction in young adult literature. By employing a narrative approach in a qualitative method which focuses on the analysis of the main character, Kafka Tamura, and his quest of identity, the findings reveal three main points. First, through the implicit characterization depicted in his preferences, Kafka is portrayed as a teenager who distances himself from the society. Second, the most prominent issue in Kafka’s quest of identity is triggered by father-centered conflicts. Third, sex and death in this novel are used as conflicts resolution. From the analysis, it can be concluded that the identity constructed by Kafka in the end of the novel is a compromised identity who learns to accept the norms and values of the society he intends to leave.  Keywords: Adolescent, coming-of-age, identity construction, young adult literature

Abstract

The present study examines the flouting and violation of maxims in a defendant’s court testimony. It also investigates the possible reasons for flouting and violation of maxims committed by the defendant. As a descriptive qualitative study, the data of the present study are in the form of transcripts of a defendant’s full testimony in the session 26 regarding the court of Olivier café murder case. By employing Grice’s (1975) theory of Cooperative Principle, the findings show that the defendant flouts the maxims of quality, quantity, relation, and manner. It is also found that the defendant only violates the maxim of quality. This present study also discovers that the reason to why the defendant flouts the maxims is generally to build a public image that she is innocent. Furthermore, the defendant violates the maxim of quality because of the intention to get a lesser sentence in the court. The findings suggest that the defendant of the court tends to flout and violate the maxims in giving her testimony to yield hidden additional meanings and intentions in her utterances as well as to mislead her audiences. Abstract

Literature has a trend that has grown its fame across the globe, called manga. They are similar in form with Western comic books, but with a different style and structure of the story’s presentation. One of the key elements of a manga’s story, the characters, pique the interest of the researcher. Kaneki Ken is the protagonist of the Tokyo Ghoul series that possesses this interesting characterization to look into. He goes through a journey that changes his characterization in a certain point in the story. To analyze this characterization, two analysis methods are used; Vogler’s (1996) hero’s journey theory and Sicoe’s (2013) character arc theory. The hero’ journey theory is used to gain an understanding of the events Kaneki goes through in his story, while the character arc theory is used to determine the kind of change he experiences. The result shows that Kaneki’s journey is a tragic hero’s journey, different from the traditional hero’s journey, and that he experiences the fall arc, which is, essentially, a tragedy. Furthermore, analysis of Kaneki’s unorthodox hero’s journey leads to the discovery of how an idolized character can start a serialization of literature, and how a serial literature, especially mangas, tend to be devious towards the hero’s journey theory.
