Passage is a journal published by English Language and Literature Study Program, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Initially published for students’ articles based on their final research paper, Passage now is also accepting articles from researchers outside the study program. The journal focuses on research in language and literary studies written in English. Passage addresses issues on, but not limited to, roles of language and literature, genre, gender, discourse, ethnicity, and media within the frameworks of linguistics and literary theories. It also welcomes more specific research on Indonesian and Southeast Asian contexts to introduce a wider scholarship in the region for a more global readership. This journal is published twice a year in the months of April and November.

Abstract

The present research investigated the narrative perspective or focalization and motherhood issue inside the novel entitled the Witch of Portobello by Paulo Coelho. The discussion focused on the main character in the story to reveal the character’s traits and her motherhood portrayal through focalization technique. The research utilized qualitative method particularly textual analysis framed by Genette’s (1983) and Culler’s (1997) focalization as the major theory. The result of the present research showed that Athena, the main character in the novel, that were presented to be a strong, independent woman with paranormal abilities who was brave enough to take dangerous risks and difficult paths to satisfy her curiosity. It was also revealed that the focalizations presented Athena to portray the traditional myth of motherhood.Keywords: Character Presentation, Motherhood, Narrative Perspective, Focalization, Literature

Abstract

The research aims to discover the types of translation strategies which were found in apparenticeship students’ translation products and to assess the students’ English-Indonesian translation quality by asking five English students to rank the students’ translation products. This research employs the theory of translation strategy proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (2000) and Sara Bani (2006). The criterias that are used to assess the apparenticeship students’ translation products are proposed by Barnwell (1980 as cited in Larson, 1984). Descriptive Qualitative study approach by Cresswell (2002), was used as the research design of the research. There are 172 selected phrases which were analyzed by the research. The result reveals that the most frequently used translation strategy is Calque (45.35%), then it was followed by Borrowing (29.65%), Adaptation (8.14%), Equivalence (6.40%), Substitution (4.66%), Generalization (2.33%), Transposition (1.74%), and Inclusion of Explanation (1.74%). The result also shows that (77.78%) of text was cut by the translators to eliminate the information that is too detail and unimportant, then to remove the information that had been covered by the previous sentences, and to cut the sensitive issue that may cause misconception to the readers. Most of participants thought that the translation products were good and understandable. However, the participants thought that the translation products are not natural since the translators used too much Calque translation strategy in translating the text.Keywords: translation strategies, translation quality, vinay and darbelnet (2000), Bani (2006)

Abstract

This study looks specifically at the borrowing words phenomenon among teenagers in one junior high school in Bandung. The borrowing words phenomenon being inverstigated in this study included the types of borrowing words, phonological process, the most dominant part of speech in borrowing words and some possible factors for borrowing to occur. The data were taken from 18 teenagers from three different grades. The seventh grade consists of six teenagers (11-12 years old), eighth grade consists of six teenagers (12-13 years old) and ninth grade consists of six teenagers (13-14 years old). The data were analyzed in a descriptive qualitative method by using the theories from Hoffer (2005), Campbell (1998), Field (2002) and Thomas (1993). The findings showed that the most frequent type of borrowing in all grades is loanword. In terms of phonological processes, the most frequent sound change occurs in the borrowing is Monophthongisation. With regard to parts of speech, noun appears as the dominant part of speech in the borrowing words. Four possible factors that cause borrowing words in teenagers are due to the frequency in using borrowing words, the number of speakers around the respondents, the habitual of expressing the English words and the low competence of the speakers. In conclusion, it seems apparent that borrowing words in this context udergo many phonological adaptations.Keywords: borrowing words, loanword, sound change, factors of borrowing words

Abstract

The study entitled “Comprehending Agent and Agentless Types of English Active and Passive Voice by Indonesian Learners of English” aims to analyze and describe how Indonesians as English learners comprehend agent and agentless types of English active and passive sentences, and to uncover the factors affecting comprehension. The participants of the study were 26 university students from a grammar class of 2015. The two main instruments used were an individual test and a set of questionnaires for personal information. Participants’ performances in the test regarding the agent and agentless types of English active and passive voices were correlated with their personal data which contain aspects affecting their learning of second language. The mean score and percentage of individual result of the test were used to determine the sentences that received the highest and the lowest performances. Two major ways were discovered that help participants comprehend those types of active and passive voices, namely identifying the items in sentences and selecting explicit choices. L1 interference is shown to have significant relations to the participants’ comprehension of agent and agentless types of English active and passive sentences, especially the interference in the structure of sentences and grammatical error. In addition to L1 interference, the factors that were taken into account to contribute to the comprehension, were individual differences. Abstract

This study aims to analyze types of structural shifts found in the nominal groups and verbal groups a novel translation and investigate how the structural shifts affect the meaning. This study follows a descriptive qualitative method (see Cresswell (2009). The data of the study are taken from the novel entitled “The Fault in Our Stars” by Green (2012) and the Indonesian version translated by Nimpoeno (2016). The analysis of the study draws on Gerot and Wignell’s (1994) theory of nominal group and transitivity and Catford’s (1965) translation theory as the basis of the categorization of the structural shifts. The data analysis reveals that there are two types of structural shifts found in the data. Those are single translation shift that includes: 1) structure shift, 2) unit shift, 3) class shift, and 4) intra-system shift and double translation shift that is the combination of the shifts. The study shows that the most frequent shifts found in the structural shifts of nominal groups is the combination of structure and class shift (38.94%). On the contrary, the most frequent shift found in the verbal groups is intra-system shift (70.59%) which belongs to the single translation shift. The study shows that structural shifts slightly affect meanings of the translation. This study suggests that linguistic analysis can indicate how learning to translate requires linguistics knowledge of certain language as the expert translators conduct the translation. Abstract

Crazy Rich Asians (2013) is a best-selling novel depicting the life of Chinese characters who were born and grew up in Singapore and America respectively. Throughout their life, they interacted with Chinese as well as American culture which made them culturally hybrid characters. Thus, this study aims to analyze how Chinese characters are represented in the novel and the meaning behind the representation within the qualitative approach and textual analysis method. Using the theory of representation (Hall, 1997) and hybridity (Bhabha, 1994), this study reveals that the Chinese characters are represented through their thought, behavior, and language which inclined towards American culture. It is found that Rachel and Nick, despite their Chinese ethnicity, are represented to adopt and uphold American culture while also maintaining a few aspects of Chinese culture. Rachel adopts and chooses American culture consciously while maintaining her Chinese culture subconsciously. On the other hand, Nick is portrayed to uphold and maintain both American and Chinese cultures by choice throughout the novel. Furthermore, the analysis of this study indicates the effort of the author to challenge and subvert the existing Chinese stereotypes in literature namely yellow peril and model minority by utilizing the characters’ hybridity. The characters are shown to interact and negotiate with the new culture within the “Third Space of Enunciation” where all presumed characteristics and perceptions are nullified. By negotiating the cultures, they invalidate the notion of pure and fixed culture which is glorified by the stereotype of Chinese. Abstract

This study aims to examine the turn-taking patterns and the possible factors influencing turn-taking in The Help (2011) movie. Particular conversations were used as the data, namely the conversations between Miss Celia and Minny (M1) as well as the conversation between Miss Hilly and Minny (M2). Using the turn-taking theory from Levinson (1983) as set out by Sacks, Schegloff, and Jefferson (1974), this study found three turn-taking patterns that occurred in both conversations; they are self-selection (SS), current speaker selects the next speaker (CS2TNS), and current speaker continues (CSC). Factors influencing turn-taking were also found in the conversations; they are social status and discourse topic. Regarding the turn-taking patterns, self-selection (SS) is the most common pattern that emerged in M1, meanwhile current speaker selects the next speaker (CS2TNS) is the dominant used in M2. The use of SS in M1 indicates that the participants have a close relationship which is portrayed through the topic being discussed. On the contrary, in M2, CS2TNS which occurs mostly in the form of command shows the power of the maid’s master. This suggests that the use of CS2TNS pattern is mostly influenced by social status. Abstract

The present study entitled Dystopian Transformations and Character Construction in Young Adult Science Fiction Lauren Olivers’ Delirium focuses on the issue of dystopian transformations and character construction. The study investigates the main character, Lena; character construction in the novel; and the contribution of character constellations in the construction of Lena’s characterization. The study was conducted within a descriptive text analysis by applying a qualitative method and is framed by theoretical frameworks of narrative theory (Rimmon-Kenan, 1983) and young adult literature science fiction and dystopia (Bradford, Mallan, Stephens McCallum, 2008). The results demonstrate that Lena’s characterization is constructed through two factors. Abstract

This Paper entitled “A Critical Discourse Analysis of Indonesian Government’s Macroeconomics Policies toward Economic Development Aspects in National Budget Plan and Financial Memorandum (2012) Speech”. It is aimed to investigate whether the Indonesian government’s economic development policies adhere to the 1945 Constitution. The study is qualitative in nature which utilizes van Dijk and Kintsch’s (1983) Semantic Representation Model. The data are the economic development policies which are elaborated in the National Budget Plan and Financial Memorandum presented before the Plenary Session of the House of Representatives by the Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on August 16, 2011. The study revealed that the substance of each government’s policies and measures on economic development in the text are in accordance with the notion of the 1945 Constitution Chapter XIV Article 33 as a basic regulation of the national economy and social welfare. Moreover, those findings clarify that the government orients each economic development policies and measures toward the idea of the fifth point of Pancasila as the fundamental principle of democratic economy.Keywords: Macroeconomics, Economic Development, Critical Discourse Analysis, Democratic Economy, Semantic Representation Model

Abstract

This study is conducted to construct ideology in Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s Footsteps. In order to construct ideology in the novel, Eagleton’s theory of six ideological features is employed as the tool to analyze the text. This study finds that there are two dominant class ideologies which are constructed in the novel, which are capitalism and feudalism. This study also finds that the characters are attributed with five ideological features, which are legitimation, rationalization, action-oriented, universalization, and naturalization to maintain the domination and advantages of the dominant classes and their ideologies.Keywords: ideology, unifying, action-oriented, rationalization, legitimation, naturalization, universalization
