Abstract

This study aims to investigate syntactic awareness of word order changes in the categories of verbal structures and the effects of bilingualism and birth order in relation to syntactic awareness. Employing a mixed method (qualitative and quantitative), data were collected in three ways: 1) visual and audio tasks tapping identification and correction, 2) questionnaires for parents to give information on their children’s backgrounds such as bilingualism and birth order, and 3) observation during the task execution by using recorders for response time and production findings. Nineteen kindergarteners aged 5 and 6 years old participated in a kindergarten in North Bandung. The results reveal that syntactic awareness of word order changes has emerged among the preschool students. The high results can be interpreted in four factors: language-specific characteristics, children’s sensitivity to the larger meaning, innateness/competence, and props. For the categories of ditransitive and transitive, syntactic awareness indicates that the more complex the structures are, the more difficult they are to understand. The implication of the result also reveals that the discrepancy between syntactic knowledge and syntactic awareness may have something to do with the separate position between acquisition and metalinguistic awareness. Also, reading is not the necessary precondition for syntactic awareness of word order change. In the end, the findings on the external factors such as bilingualism and birth order do not seem to affect syntactic awareness performance. Keywords: metalinguistic awareness, syntactic awareness, factors of syntactic awareness, preschool students, linguistic knowledge

Abstract

Age and narrative structures are two elements which tend to be used by most researchers in studying language skill. However, most tend to analyze it separately and with older participants. In fact, children have developed this skill since very young age. This study aims to analyze the oral narrative structure in typically developing children aged two to seven, as well as the influencing social factors. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method to describe and investigate the research questions. The findings show that the typically developing children aged two to seven are able to tell story structurally. However, from the six elements of narrative (abstract, orientation, complication, evaluation, resolution, and coda), most of the participating children’s narrations consist of three elements namely abstract, orientation, and complication. Among older ages, their stories become more complete. In addition, from the three central parenting methods consisting of children’s participation in daily routine, engagement between children and caregivers, and appropriateness of material given, the first aspect seems to play the most visible effect in shaping the children’s narrative skills. This study is expected to give contribution in examining narrative skill development, especially in young aged children. Thus, any possibilities of language disorder and impairment in children can be identified and treated earlier. Abstract

Gender stereotyping is a common phenomenon shown in films. Many films, such as those produced by Disney, often portray their male and female characters stereotypically. One of Disney’s recent children movies is Moana (2016). This research aims to analyze how the main character in Moana (2016) is portrayed and seeks to answer whether the portrayal conform to or goes against gender stereotypes. To analyze the gender stereotypes embedded in the film, the study draws on Evans and Davies’ (2009) framework as well as those of Copenhaver’s (2002) and Brannon’s (2016). Meanwhile, Boggs and Petrie’s (2008) characterization in films has been adopted to unravel the character of Moana. The analysis shows that Moana is portrayed as a character who possesses both masculine and feminine traits; the masculine traits, however, are more dominant that the feminine ones. This indicates that the film tends to go against gender stereotyping by portraying a complexity of traits within the main character. Keywords: Disney’s Movie, Gender Stereotypes.

Abstract

Being cohesive in writing for deaf students is very crucial as it is a mean of expressing idea to those who do not understand sign language. Thus, this study aims to analyze the cohesion of deaf students’ recount texts in terms of the choice of theme and thematic progression patterns. Using Halliday’s (1994) theory of functional grammar as its main theory, the present study investigates types of theme, thematic progression patterns, and how these two elements support the cohesion of deaf students’ recount texts. The data were collected from 36 recount texts from high achiever and low achiever students from three educational levels. In terms of theme choice, the findings show that low achiever students tend to employ more marked theme (63,64% of the total marked themes) as they lack of the ability to write a grammatically correct sentence. In terms of the thematic progression, theme reiteration pattern is the most frequent pattern employed by deaf students, indicating that they want to make a strong focus on the topic discussed in their recount texts. Keywords: cohesion; theme analysis; recount text; deaf students.

Abstract

The research is a descriptive study of the representation of the cultures of Italy, India, and Indonesia in the novel Eat, Pray, Love (2006). The purpose of the research is not only to depict the way the traveler represents the three countries, but also to reveal the traveler’s manner towards the differences of the host cultures – Italy, India, and Indonesia – compared to her cultural origin. As a novel which contains travelling experiences and descriptions about the host culture, Eat, Pray, Love shows the tendency of the writer’s supreme attitude towards the cultures of the three countries. To answer the formulated research problems, the study uses Victor Segalen’s (2001) notions of Exoticism which emphasizes exoticism as the notion of difference: the perception of diversity. The research employed qualitative approach and was presented in a descriptive method. The findings of the study show that the three countries are exotic destinations in terms of their cultural, religious, and economic levels. The cultures of the three countries are exotic characterized by three aspects: the existence of the observer’s desires towards the observed object, the ability of the observed object in fulfilling the observer’s desire for exotic experience, and the remoteness of the observed object. From the analysis, it is found that the traveler gradually respects and appreciates the heterogeneity of the host culture’s world views. Keywords: Representation, Travel Writing, Exotic, Exoticism, Supremacy

Abstract

The present study entitled The Portrayal of Women in Katy Perry’s Selected Song Lyrics aims at drawing the portrayal of women in the selected song lyrics and revealing gendered messages in the selected song lyrics as viewed in post feminism perspectives. Utilizing a qualitative research particularly descriptive method, the discussion of the present study is framed within gender studies and theory of post feminism. The result of the present study shows that most of women in One of the Boys album (2008) are portrayed through five portrayals highlighting women’s physical appearance, women as sexual subject, women’s passive behavior, and women’s attitudes to cover their dependency on men. These portrayals support patriarchal ideology in which women are in accordance with patriarchal society’s expectation. The present study also discovers that gendered messages in most of song lyrics in One of the Boys do not show the notion of post feminism by being passive and dependent to men. Nevertheless, several songs explore the theme of sexuality as one of feminism values. Keywords: Gender, Feminism, Ideology, Women

Abstract

This paper investigates the ways the Persians are represented in the movie ‘300’. Furthermore, the study also analyzes the relationship between the movie and the current socio-political issues between the United States and Iran. This study uses Edward Said’s (1978) Orientalism as the main theoretical framework and Davis, Mules and Thwaites’ (1994) character and characterization as the supporting theoretical framework. In addition, Brian’s (2005) Film and Politicsin Americais used to to analyze the relationship between the movie ‘300’ and the socio-political issues between the U.S. and Iran. The study finds that Persians are characterized as being inferior, evil, savage, bestial, and corrupt, amplifying their positions as the villains in the movie. This negative portrayals, from a perspective of the Orientalist, areforms of pejorative stereotypes. With regard to the relationship between the movie and the current socio-political issue between the U.S. and Iran, it seems apparent that the movie is used asapropaganda by the U.S. government. This can be clearly seen from the negative representation of Persians as villains, the movie producer, and the time of the movie release. All the findings above indicate that a film can be used as a tool for a propaganda. Keywords: Orientalism, Orient, Occident, Character and Characterization, Representation, Persians

Abstract

This study explores the oppression and identity in Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 (henceforth, F451). It examines the portrayal of oppression in the F451 society and how these oppressions affect the main protagonist’s identity construction. To meet the purposes, the study was designed under cultural materialism approach and applies Young’s theory on oppression known as Five Faces of Oppression (1990) and Hall’s theory on identity as the theoretical framework of the study. The findings reveal that there are five forms of oppression evident in the novel: exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence. It also indicates that the main protagonist’s identity is constructed by the oppression that he observes and notices through his interaction with characters and things around him. As the result of these oppressions, Montag’s identity is transformed from ignorant to non-conformist. Seeing from the cultural materialism perspective, the fictional world of F451 is a metaphor of a more media-absorbed society of America 1950s. As such, this oppression should be resisted. In this case, Montag’s identity construction can be interpreted as the representation of the resistance. Thus, parallel to its context, F451 presages the threat of media dominance and at the same time offers a possible way to fight against it.Keywords: Oppression, Identity, Cultural Materialism, Fahrenheit 451

Abstract

This research investigates the issue of freedom in Anthony Burgess’ novel “A Clockwork Orange (1962). The aim of the research is to identify the way this novel define freedom. The research employs descriptive qualitative method in which the writer describes, interprets and analyses the text to answer the research question. This study uses the works of Anshari (2014) and Gallie (1956) on freedom in post-colonialism along with the works of Swenson (1948) and Dastagir (2007) on freedom in existentialism as the theoretical framework to analyse the data. The findings show that this novel defines freedom through the actions of the main character, Alex who is driven by two factors in three stages of freedom and also a question of freedom that repeated throughout the novel. Moreover, the research also finds that according to the novel, freedom is a treat that is specialized for humans and thus becomes the characteristics of being a human and differentiate humans with any other creature. When humans lose their freedom, they cannot choose and those who cannot choose cease to be humans. Keywords: Post-Colonialism, Existentialism, Freedom

Abstract

Isolation and estrangement is probably still one of the most recurring themes in today’s literature. Haruki Murakami, a renowned contemporary novelist, often adapted the theme of alienation and the endless search for true freedom in his works. Written as a a bildungsroman novel by depicting the life of a troubled young adult protagonist, Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage is Murakami’s recent work which also highlights the alienation issue. Abandoned by his group of close friends without any apparent reason, Tsukuru is haunted by the feeling of loneliness and unreasonable guilt which drives him to yearn for death. Employing Irene Taviss’ (1969) theory as a framework, this study aims to discuss the representation of social and self-alienation of the main characters in the latest Haruki Murakami’s novel. It is shown that Tsukuru experiences both social and self-alienation that estranges and also torments him mentally. Moreover, the findings also discover that Tsukuru’s self-alienation is mostly triggered by the social alienation event that he experienced in the past, representing that self and social alienation is interlinked to each other.
