Abstract

This study aims to investigate the descriptions of an Indo character in Moh. Sanoesi’s Siti Rayati and what alternative meanings can be found from the descriptions. Indo character was chosen because it is interesting to study, considering hybrid is the results of borderline engagements of cultural differences (Bhabha, 1994). To answer the questions, the data were gathered through textual analysis with close-reading approach. It was revealed that the Indo character is described in the sense of being superior, humble, in between and well-exposed by Dutch culture. From the categories, it may be inferred that there could have been an attempt by the writer to change the perception towards Indo-people’s stereotypes at that time.Keywords: Indo-People, Hybrid, Alternate-Meaning, Dutch Culture, Sundanese Society, Indo-People’s Stereotype

Abstract

The present study entitled Breaking the Magic Code: Finding the Pattern of Goodkind’s Fantasy Fiction Wizard’s First Rule aims at identifying the pattern of the story through analyzing the fantasemes and the ways the story constructs the logic of the secondary world. Utilizing a qualitative research particularly descriptive method, the study adopts Nikolajeva’s (1988) fantasy theory. The study found that the fantasy story construction is presented through combination of fantasemes. From the analysis of the fantasemes it is clear that the story utilizes a pattern linear to common fantasy fiction, however it also creates a new pattern. Similar to other fantasy stories, this story has a character traveling and leaving home, challenged and helped, performing a task and gaining triumph. The differences are in the absence of primary world which is replaced by heterotopias. The story constructs the logic of the secondary world through following magic laws, namely limitation and consistency.Keywords: Fantasy, Fantasemes, The Magic Space, The Magic Time, The Magic Passage, The Magic Impact, The Magic Law

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of suffix {–i} and {–kan} in Indonesian online newspapers by discovering the bases as well as grammatical meanings and functions that are shown by the use of each suffix. The researcher also attempts to analyze the differences between suffix {–i} and {–kan}. Two hundred thousand words of the articles from three Indonesian online newspapers, Kompas, Republika, Tempo, were taken for being analyzed. The data were analyzed by a corpus program AntConc. For the knowledge of suffixes, the researcher used Sneddon’s (2010) book as a guidance. The results showed that the noun bases often appear to be attached by suffix {-i} and {-kan}. It can be concluded that the use of suffix {-kan} are more common in the articles of formal documents, in this case Indonesian online newspapers, because many Indonesian bases that come from English, which mostly appear in the formal documents, can be only attached by suffix {-kan}. Keywords: AntConc, Grammatical Functions, Grammatical Meanings, Suffix {-i}, Suffix {-kan}

Abstract

This study aims to examine the journey to maturity of the main character, Landon Carter, in A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks, by analyzing the literary elements that construct it. Employing a textual analysis method, this study is framed within Allport’s (1961) theory of maturity, and to discuss the analysis, Bean and Moni’s (2003) theory of young adult literature is also employed. The findings show that Landon’s journey to maturity is depicted mostly through the use of one literary element, namely characterization peculiar to Reams’ (2015). Based on Allport’s (1961) general criteria of maturity, throughout the story, Landon shows six types of maturity: (1) extension of the sense of self, (2) warm relatedness of self to others, (3) emotional security, (4) realistic perception of skills, (5) self-insight, and (6) unifying philosophy of life, and three types of immaturity: (1) an ego-centric sense of self, (2) emotional insecurity, and (3) lack of self-insight. Based on the analysis, several moral values can be obtained by young adult readers with different perspectives from reading Landon’s journey to maturity, such as the importance of being mature and the struggles of attaining maturity. Abstract

In this era of advance information and technology, many e-commerce platforms are rising and competing to attract the prospect customers by creating unique and out of the box video advertisements. Among them are Bukalapak, JD.ID, Lazada, Shopee, and Tokopedia as the top five rising e-commerce platforms in Indonesia which place their video advertisements in YouTube. The objectives of this research are to identify the realization of the generic structure elements in the video advertisements of those five mentioned online shops and how copy elements are distributed in the generic structure of each video. Genre analysis under the theory of Systemic Functional Linguistics by M.A.K Halliday (1984) are utilized as the framework of the analysis to see the generic structure of each video advertisement, and copy elements theory proposed by Maslen (2009) are used to identify the copy elements. The needed data were mainly taken from each online shop's YouTube channel which were further transcribed and put into designed table. This study applies qualitative approach and employs simple descriptive statistics analysis to help mapping out the findings regarding the generic structure of the video advertisements and the copy elements distribution. Abstract

This paper aims to investigate écriture féminine features in The Selection Series: The One novel written by Kiera Cass (2014). Female writers of dystopian literary works have increased in the past current years. The fact that the story of The Selection Series by Kiera Cass is narrated from a female perspective in a patriarchal country has drawn a connection to feminist study. This research used descriptive qualitative method and textual analysis that employs the theory of Écriture féminine by Helene Cixous (1976) and patriarchy by Gerda Lerner (1986). It is found that two primary features of écriture feminine, namely patriarchy and bisexual writing, are depicted in the novel as being interrelated. Patriarchy in the novel is mostly found in public sphere; therefore, a large amount of evidence of bisexual writing is found as responses to the patriarchal system. Three main forms of bisexual writing are found in the novel: negotiation, empowerment, and plurality. It seems that Kiera Cass successfully adapts écriture féminine in her novel. However, the end of the story of The One (2014) also implies that the deconstruction of patriarchy occurrs when there are acceptance and willingness of plurality, not only from women but also from men. Keywords: bisexual writing, dystopia, écriture feminine, patriarchy.

Abstract

The study entitled “A Bodily Codes Analysis Used in Revealing an Imaginary Friend Character in Bill Watterson’s Comic Strip: Calvin and Hobbes” seeks to discover the representation of imaginary character of Hobbes based on his bodily codes occurred in the 5 selected strips purposively. To obtain deeper understanding, this study applies four basic premises of experientialism proposed by Buckland (2004) towards 9 bodily codes proposed by Chandler (2002). This study uses a qualitative method in order to describe the premises in a narrative way. It discovered that Hobbes makes 76 bodily codes. There are 14 appearances as a real tiger (18.42%), 14 gestures (18.42%), 12 postures (15.79%), 9 proximities (11.84%), 9 physical orientations (11.84%), 8 facial expressions (10.53%), 7 gazes (9.21%), 3 bodily contacts (3.95%), and 0 head-nods (0%). Furthermore, this study also discovered 5 representations of Hobbes. The first is Hobbes as a cloning of Calvin. The second representation is Hobbes as a friend of Calvin. Third, Hobbes is represented as a pet. The forth representation is Hobbes as an opponent of Calvin. Lastly, Hobbes is represented as a real tiger which has instincts as a wild animal. Therefore, in Bill Watterson’s Calvin and Hobbes, Hobbes is visualized as something very close to very distant for Calvin. Keywords: Bodily Codes, Basic Premises of Experientialism, Representation, Comic Strip.

Abstract

This research analyzes narrative techniques in Sue Monk Kidd’s novel The Secret Life of Bees (2002) by using Barry’s version (2002) of Genette’s Narratology theory (1980). The purpose of the research is to identify how the story is narrated and how the narrative constructs the main character as evidenced in the novel. By applying the theory, this research attempts to gain insights into how the narrative is presented to the reader in the form of first person mode. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method. This research finds that the story The Secret Life of Bees is narrated through six narrative categorizations: narrative level, narrative time, narrative voice, focalization, narrative of words, and narrative mode. Moreover, the narrative constructs the main character through four methods of characterizations: physical description, dialogue and actions, thoughts and feelings, and what other characters’ say about the main character. This research implies that the story The Secret Life of Bees is well organized. The use of first person narrative and the presence of child character who is also the narrator have made the story interesting and easy to follow. Furthermore, the development of the main character also plays a crucial role in giving the clue to the story’s meaning and successfully covers the major theme of the story.Keywords: Cultural Words, Translator’s Tendency
