Abstract

The research aims to investigate the types of Sundanese slang used by teenagers on a social media LINE and the social factors influencing the use of slang. This research applies a descriptive qualitative research method. The participants of this research were 28 students of a senior high school in Bandung, whose ages are in the middle of 16-18. The data were collected through conversations on social media LINE. To analyze the data, the theory proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006) and other theory of slang types were implemented to identify the types of Sundanese slang. To examine possible factors which influence the use of Sundanese slang by the teenagers, this study uses Holmes (2003) social factors and social dimensions of language use. The findings reveal that the participants express slang on social media LINE. Those slang words are categorized into five types. However, the Sundanese slang found in this research only matched with the two types: imitative type and clipping type. In addition there are two other types of slang found in the research outside the categories proposed by Allan and Burridge (2006), namely loan or borrowing and back slang. The most widely used type of slang is clipping type with 57 %, followed by imitative type with 20%, loan/borrowing type with 20%, and back slang with 3%. The teenagers tend to use the clipping type because they want to write as fast as possible, in order to save a bit of their time. Furthermore, the findings show that there are three social factors influencing the use of slang by the teenagers, namely participants, settings, and topics. This study confirms Zhou (2013), Pedersen (2009), Reyes (2005), and Tannen (1996) who state that male tends to use more slang rather than the female. The present research is also in line with Richter (2006) and Reyes (2005) who claim that the use of slang is influenced by the topics. However, this study contradicts Warsa (2013) who asserts that Sundanese slang is not influenced by other languages and there is almost no clipping on it. Whereas, the results of the present research show that the Sundanese slang used by the youth is influenced by Indonesian and English, and the most frequent slang used by the youth is the clipping type. Abstract

Sherlock Holmes is a prominent fictional character in detective fiction that has inspired many literary works. However, there are debates nowadays concerning whether or not Holmes is categorized as a sociopath, and the present study was done to find the answer. The present study aims to investigate the extent to which sociopathic characteristics are attributed to Sherlock Holmes in A Study in Scarlet (2013). The data used in the study comes mainly from the narration of Dr. Watson concerning the behaviors of Sherlock Holmes. The theories applied in the data analysis are Genette’s Focalization (1980), Minderop’s Characterization (2005), Hare’s Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) (1998), and Scarlet’s (2011) categorization of Hare’s PCL-R items. The study reveals that the sociopathic attributes are constructed through the assumption of Dr. Watson and Stamford. The findings also show that the score of Hare’s (1998) PCL-R of Holmes is eleven, which is lower than the minimum score of a sociopath (22-29) and higher than a normal person (0-6), thus he cannot be classified as both. For this reason, further studies concerning the topic are needed to identify the suitable category of Sherlock Holmes. Keywords: characterization, focalization, Hare’s psychopathy checklist-revised, Sherlock Holmes, sociopathic attributes

Abstract

This study investigates the portrayal of sibling rivalry in the novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (2008) by Jeff Kinney. The purpose of this study is to describe how sibling rivalry is portrayed in the novel Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules. The sibling rivalry aspects in the novel is analyzed using the theory of psychoanalysis proposed by Freud (1989) through the events occurring in the novel among the Heffley siblings, which are Rodrick, Greg, and Manny. This study is also supported by the theory of sibling rivalry proposed by Hurlock (2001). This study uses a qualitative method to interpret the data. From the analysis of the study, it was found that the sibling rivalry aspects portrayed in the novel appear in the Heffley sibling’s id, ego, and superego. The findings of the study suggest that the novel portrays some of the sibling rivalry aspects proposed by Hurlock (2001), which are aggression and jealousy. The portrayal of sibling rivalry in the novel is articulated through selfishness, aggression, competition, humiliation, avoidance, jealousy, and lack of appreciation. In addition, the most dominant sibling rivalry aspect is selfishness. However, the sibling rivalry aspects between the Heffley sibling is different from one to another; the eldest, Rodrick, shows the most sibling rivalry aspects. Abstract

This paper is entitled “Representation of the Conflict between KPK and POLRI in Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s Speech”. By employing a sociocognitive approach in accordance with the categories of semantic macrostructure and microstructure proposed by van Dijk (2008), the study demonstrates how the representation of the conflict between KPK and POLRI is projected and the ideology behind the former President’s speech. This study focuses on the former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s speech on October 8th, 2012, which presents his standpoint towards the conflict. The analysis shows that the conflict between KPK and POLRI is represented as frailty of the state institutions in enforcing the law, therefore showing a great political crisis. Regarding the analysis of microstructure, this study also finds that the President shows his full support for KPK more than POLRI as he questions the accusation of Novel Baswedan and the DPR’s offer related to the readjustment of KPK’s regulation. Furthermore, the President shows his egocentric demeanour by significantly emphasising his attempt of reconciliation in response to the public’s expectation. Additionally, the president considers the conflict as a collective responsibility. This consideration is then viewed as a strategy to restore his blackened reputation due to the public’s consideration of the government’s inactivity in resolving the conflict and therefore reflexes a social democracy. Keywords: representation, sociocognitive approach, ideology, macrostructure, microstructure

Abstract

Metaphor is not merely a matter of language, but it is also concerned with the conceptual system of an individual. There Is No New York Today (2016) by Aan Mansyur is a poetry anthology that employs metaphors to deliver the themes of the poems. This study attempts to investigate how the metaphors work in conveying the theme of longing in the 10 selected poems of Aan Mansyur. The three theories, consisting of Lakoff and Johnson’s (2003) conceptual metaphor theory, Kovecses’s (2010) common target and source domains formula, and Scheibe, Freund, and Baltes’s (2007) longing characteristics, are employed to unravel the types of target and source domains in the metaphors and examine the way the metaphors construe the persona’s state of longing. The findings show there are at least 28 metaphors of longing discovered in this study, wherein 10 target domains and 22 source domains are identified. Based on the analysis of these metaphors, longing becomes the major theme expressed throughout the poems. The persona is found to encounter five longing characteristics, namely feeling of incompleteness, persona utopia, emotional ambivalence, tri-time focus, and reflective and evaluative component. The dominant longing characteristic found in this study is feeling of incompleteness, in which mostly conveyed by the natural forces as the source domain. The variety of metaphors are proven to conveyed the theme of longing differently, as different characteristics appear to show different side of longing encountered by the persona. In this study, the metaphors are proven to take a crucial part in conveying the abstract concept of human feeling, namely longing, as well as enriching the meaning of the longing in the poem into several layers, from the negative state to the positive developmental one. Abstract

This study aims to discover the lexico-grammatical features and social function of Ria Ricis and Atta Halilintar’s, promotional captions on Instagram. There were some frameworks used to guide this research, such as Gerot and Wignell’s explanations about the lexico-grammatical features and social function of descriptive, procedure, and recount text (1995), and Halliday’s transitivity analysis (2014). The qualitative method was used to conduct this research. The results show that promotional captions could consist of descriptive, procedure, and recount texts with different lexico-grammatical features and social function for each text type. Relational Processes dominate descriptive texts, while Material Processes appear frequently in procedure texts. In terms of recount texts, Ria Ricis’ recount texts are dominated by Material Processes while Atta Halilintar’s recount texts contain Material Processes, Mental Processes, and Behavioral Processes. The social function of promotional caption is to sell products and services online. However, each text type has different social function.
