Abstract

This research probes the representation of social actors in two prominent Western mass media. The Egyptian and Syrian governments are the focuses of this research. The data of this research were taken from two Western mass media, namely BBC and CNN. This research is descriptive qualitative in nature. The data includes the online news articles published in official sites of BBC and CNN. The analysis examined how social actors are excluded and included in the texts. The findings showed that BBC and CNN mostly represent the Egyptian and Syrian governments negatively. It was discovered from the excessive use of predicate with negative semantic load attached to the Egyptian and Syrian governments. Such excessive use of predicate implicates that BBC and CNN were likely to expose the bad sides of the Egyptian and Syrian governments to the world citizen. This practice appears to reflect how the two media view the two national governments. Keywords: Representation, Mass Media, Egyptian and Syrian Governments

Abstract

The study aims to identify the types of slang, subtitling strategies applied, and the types of equivalence discovered in the movie subtitle. There are three different theoretical frameworks employed in this study in order to analyze the data, those are the classification of types of slang based on the lexical meaning proposed by Finnegan et al. (1992) and the word-formation process proposed by Yule (1996), the subtitling strategies as proposed by Gottlieb (1992 in Ghaemi and Benyamin, 2010); and the types of equivalence by Kade (1968 in Pym, 2010). Descriptive Qualitative approach was employed as the research design in this study. There are 370 slang words and phrases as the collected data which were taken from 50/50 movie subtitle. The result revealed that out of 12 classifications of types of slang, there were 8 types identified, and Synonymy (55.14%) was the most frequent type of slang applied in the movie subtitle. Similar to the types of slang, there are 7 out of 10 subtitling strategies applied in the movie subtitle, and the most-used strategy applied in the movie subtitle was Transfer (43.43%). Furthermore, in types of equivalence, there are 3 out of 4 types with the most frequent type applied in the movie subtitle was One to Several equivalence (95.9%). In addition, in the combination of three analyses, Synonymy-Transfer-One to Several equivalence was mostly appeared simultaneously in the movie subtitle which has 73 occurrences. Therefore, it can be concluded that types of slang, subtitling strategies, and types of equivalence are correlated to each other. It happened because the subtitling strategies as the strategies which were used to translate the slang words and phrases resulted in the translated version of the slang that were classified into types of equivalence. Keywords: Slang words and phrases, Types of Slang, Subtitling Strategies, and Types of Equivalence.

Abstract

The research aims to investigate and identify the skopos of the target texts, translation method and strategies used by BBC in translating Middle East news online articles. This research employed descriptive qualitative methodology with descriptive statistics method. The data were taken from BBC main web site for 20 original articles (English version) and BBC Indonesia for 20 translated articles (Indonesian version). The data were analyzed based on translation theories of translation methods proposed by Newmark (1988) and translation strategies, including selected microstrategies proposed by Schjoldager (2008, in Jensen, 2009); and strategies related to journalistic translation from Klaudy and Laviosa in Vybíralová (2012), Bani (2006), and Bielsa and Bassnett (2009). The result revealed that the skopos of the target texts is to make informative text in form of brief online news articles for Indonesian readers. The target texts also should have the characteristics of the journalistic translation which are to give less-effort readability (Bani, 2006) and immediate comprehension. The translation method which becomes the translator’s overall plan is Communicative Translation in 14 articles (70%) with 93 occurrences (50%). Communicative Translation makes the target texts comprehensive and acceptable to the readership (Newmark, 1988). It also establishes less-effort readability. The other methods are Faithful Translation in 6 articles (30%) with 72 occurrences (38%) and Free Translation with only 21 occurrences (11%). In translation strategies analysis, Explicitation has 28 occurrences (37%), Calque with 26 occurrences (34%), Change of sentence order with 10 occurrences (13%), Simplification with 9 occurrences (12%), Direct transfer with 2 occurrences (3%) and Inclusion of explanation with 1 occurrence (1%). Explicitation is used more often than calque in the translation process as one of the functional characteristics of informative text type which is to transmit referential contents (Reiss, 1976 in Munday, 2001). The other strategies, Cutting was used in 18 articles (90%) and there are 13 articles (65%) in which their titles were changed. 12 articles were changed from direct to indirect titles and one article from indirect to direct titles. Cutting supports the skopos by omitting additional information (subsections), while Indirect Titles make the target text titles brief and establish attraction to the target readers by presenting hint.

Abstract

In the earlier films produced by Disney, the female main characters are dominated by white-skinned women. Disney’s films that have non-white female main characters just emerged at the end of the 20th century. However, the question whether white women and non-white women maintain the same qualities are still going on. Thus, this study investigates the representation of Disney’s white and non-white women in Brave (2012) and Moana (2016) produced by Walt Disney Studios in the 21st century. Adopting a qualitative method, this present study analyzes the female main characters’ characterizations which are drawn upon Boggs and Petrie’s (2008) framework of characterization in films. The study also employs Corrigan’s (2010) framework of mise-en-scene to strengthen the analysis. The findings reveal that Disney’s white and non-white women are represented differently. Disney’s white women tend to be represented as a rebellious female main character in the domestic sphere. On the other hand, Disney’s non-white women represent a devoted female main character in the realm of the public sphere. Despite the differences, both female main characters represent a new archetype of Disney’s princess who is more egalitarian, brave and not dependent on men. Keywords: women representation, white and non-white, domestic and public sphere

Abstract

This research entitled Face Observance in Twitter Conversationsis aimed at investigating the politeness strategies used by the speakers in observing and non-observing their hearers’ face in Twitter conversations, the response given by the hearers, and the effects which may be resulted from (non) observance. This study employs a descriptive qualitative study. The data were taken from conversations made in Twitter. This study showed that the four types of politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987) namely, bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record are used by the speakers in observing and non-observing their hearers’ negative and positive face. The hearers’ response to the (non) observance done by the speakers by using different strategies may produce some effects to the conversation itself. The result shows that there are two kinds of effects resulted from (non) observance done by the speakers. The first effect is that the conversation goes well without any distraction while the second one is that the conversation is distracted or even stopped. It is suggested that positive politeness strategy seems to be the preferred choice taken by the participants in maintaining a conversation. Keywords: Face, Observance,Politeness, Face Threatening Acts, Politeness StrategiesKeywords: Face, Observance,Politeness, Face Threatening Acts, Politeness Strategies

Abstract

This research attempts to discover how a young adult dystopian novel entitled Legend by Marie Lu portrays a totalitarian government controls its subject and the way young adult characters resists to it. This research employs Foucault’s discipline technique and categorization of resistance. The findings shows that the controlling strategies in the society within Legend reflect two of Foucault’s techniques: geneses organization, and distribution system. Additionally, the controlling strategy is supported by terror and knowledge concealment. For the young adult resistance aspect, the characters’ resistance acts are found to be directed towards subjection and domination. The resistance is manifested through actions which embody two major characteristics, aggressive or submissive. In addition, Legend also demonstrates the use of discourse as a device to revolt. Ultimately, Legend appears to inherit the didactic nature of young adult dystopian literature as it cast warning about absolutism of certain group, the danger of a certain policy in current society, and the importance of knowledge, individuality and freedom of choice. Keywords: control, resistance, discipline, dystopia, young adult literature

Abstract

This study explores the idea of American Dream in Chang-Rae Lee’s dystopian novel entitled On Such A Full Sea. It examines how American Dream manifests in the text. To meet the purpose, Cullen’s (2009) theory and indicators of American Dream are used for this research. This research uses qualitative approach in form of textual analysis. The findings reveal that American Dream is not static, as it is always changing. American Dream in the text manifests through the formations of negotiations. These negotiations are in forms of alternatives for their American Dream that appears through the characters’ process of self-learning as they go through their life journey. It is found that there are three out of four indicators of American Dream that appear in the text: freedom, equality, and upward mobility. This study also finds that according to the text, happiness can be attained, even though the American Dreams mentioned are not achieved. Through the characters’ process of self-learning, it is found that being useful for people around, being thankful for what is already owned, and being with loved ones in tough times can result in happiness. Keywords: American Dream, freedom, equality, happiness, upward mobility, dystopian literature
