Abstract

This qualitative descriptive study attempts to evaluate the sentence types, the sentence logic, and the appropriateness of citations and references in the journal articles written by lecturers from the Faculty of Mathematics and Science and the Faculty of Engineering. The sentence analysis is based on the frameworks proposed by Alwi, Dardjowidjojo, Lapoliwa, and Moeliono (2003) and Oshima and Hogue (2007). Meanwhile, the analysis of citations and references is based on APA style (6th edition). The results of the sentence analysis show that complex sentences are the most frequent sentence type found in the journal articles. Moreover, the quality of sentence logic in the journal articles is good since most of sentences are written correctly and well structured. Citations and references analysis regarding the characteristics of reference sources show several important results: 1) books are the most frequent reference sources used in the journal articles, 2) the most common language used in the journal articles is Indonesian language, and 3) the sources published in 6 – 10 years are the most frequent source used in the journal articles. Regarding the appropriateness of citations and references, citations and references are mostly written inappropriately. In addition, mistakes related to the use of mechanics are the most common citation mistake and mistakes related to title are the most common reference mistake found in the journal articles. Overall, it can be concluded that the journal articles are good regarding the sentence logic but they need more improvement regarding citations and referencesKeywords: Sentence Types, Sentence Logic, Appropriateness, Citations, References

Abstract

This study explores alienation in Haruki Murakami’s Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman. It studies the aspects of alienation in three selected short stories from Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman: “A Folklore for My Generation: A Pre-History of Late-Stage Capitalism,” “Tony Takitani,” and “Firefly,” and how these aspects manifest in the lives of the people in the selected stories. To achieve the objectives, the study was conducted under postmodernist approach and employs Seeman’s theory on alienation known as Seeman’s Aspects of Alienation (1959) as the theoretical framework of the study. The findings divulge that there are four alienation aspects palpable in the selected short stories: powerlessness, meaninglessness, normlessness, and social isolation. They also disclose that the alienation aspects found manifest through four key points i.e. the unknown origins of alienation, the problem of choices overload, the fragmentation of life aspects, and disconnected relational self. Viewed from postmodern perspective, Murakami’s Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman can be interpreted as a representation of contemporary Japan as it portrays contemporary alienation issues, which are the effects of the breaking down of the Japanese traditional norms establishment, the grand narrative, in at least two occasions in Japanese history, Japan’s involvement and defeat in World War II and the student movement in the sixties. Keywords: Alienation, Postmodernism, Blind Willow Sleeping Woman

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze The Little Prince film using Marxism. The Little Prince film was released in 2015 with Mark Osborne as the director. This film was adapted from its book, but it tells the story from a different angle, which in turn changes the meaning of the film in some ways. A number of issues in the film can be analyzed from Marxism. The Little Prince film appears to highlight current thinking adopted by the society about work. Specifically, employing a qualitative research approach, this paper reveals the various representations of capitalism embedded in the film and the social class distinction that is portrayed. The analysis is expected to raise critical awareness among the audience of the ideologies embedded in the film. Keywords: The Little Prince, film, Marxist approach, capitalism, social class

Abstract

This study explores the use of conjunctive adverbials (CAs) in journals with different indexing levels, specifically to see the distribution of conjunctive adverbials and whether the most dominant conjunctive adverbial is used correctly. Thirty articles were collected from two journals, with specification: fifteen articles from journal indexed in international database (INT) and fifteen articles from journal indexed in national database (NAT), and encoded into INT-01 until INT-15 and NAT-01 until NAT-15. Forty adverbials belonging to four classes of conjunctive adverbials according to Celce-Murcia and Larsen-Freeman (1999) were searched using Laurence Anthony’s concordance program (AntConc). The results show thirty individual conjunctive adverbials from four classes occur in the whole corpus. From this finding, additive class dominates the frequency of occurrence in the whole corpus by 49.4 percent. In line with this result, the most frequently used CA is the conjunctive adverbial also, with 26 percent occurrence from 1380 CAs found in the whole corpus. Based on these results, the analysis is centered on conjunctive adverbial also as the most dominant CA in order to see how this CA is used. The findings show that the conjunctive adverbial also is mostly used correctly; however, there are cases where the use of conjunctive adverbial also is redundant with additive class members, and even overlaps with other classes. In conclusion, the case of overuse and inappropriate register still linger on the use of CAs in academic prose register, whether it is internationally indexed or not. Abstract

The present study investigates how ideational meaning is realized in Indonesian folktales. Three folktales from three different regions were used as the data, namely Malin Kundang, Timun Mas, and Sangkuriang. The analyses were conducted by using the Systemic Functional Linguistics theory proposed by Halliday (1985) as the theoretical framework, mainly focusing on the concept of transitivity. The findings show that material process, relational process, and verbal process are dominantly used in the folktales. There are also the two most identified participants in the folktales, namely goal and actor. The circumstance of time and the circumstance of place become the most frequent circumstances in the folktales. Moreover, the context of situation influences the use of language in the folktales. There are some attributes attached to the subject matters being conveyed, which are about family issues and supernatural events. Lastly, the main participants in the folktales have a variety of attributes representing themselves and their relationships. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate that Indonesian folktales used in this study reflect Indonesian’s cultural beliefs and way of life. Keywords: ideational meaning; transitivity; context of situation; systemic functional linguistics

Abstract

This research is geared towards discovering the representation of corruption in Djarum 76 television advertisements “Kontes Jin” and “Pungli” versions and revealing the ideology behind the advertisements. The research utilizes descriptive qualitative method. Drawing on data in the form of videos, the transformed scenes were analyzed using Selby Coedery’s(1995) theory of visual elements of television advertisement, and Barthes’(1977)theory of orders of signification. The research reveals that corruption in the advertisements is represented as a terrifying problem in Indonesia and is difficult to annihilate. Corruption is also represented as the product of materialism, which appears when the excessive desire of collecting affluence is not fulfilled. The research also reveals that materialism and corruption culture are the ideologies which can be found in the advertisements. Keywords: Representation, Ideology, Corruption, Djarum 76

Abstract

The present study is aimed at investigating the type of Indonesian cultural words found in the novel Negeri 5 Menara and the translated novel, and also to examine the translation techniques used by the translator in translating them into English, the translator’s tendency in translating cultural words and the factors leading to the translator’s tendency. To analyze the kinds of cultural word found in the novel and how those cultural words are translated, three primary theories were used: cultural words classification (Newmark, 1988), translation techniques (Molina Albir, 2002), and translation strategies (Venuti, 2004). To investigate factors leading to the translator’s tendency the interview with the translator was held. The result of the study shows that there are various kinds of cultural word found in the novel and most of them were domesticated. The factors leading to the translator’s tendency were cultural differences and the author’s intention to get wider readership. Keywords: Narrative techniques, Barry’s Version (2002) of Genette’s narratology theory (1980), Narrative Categorizations, Characterization, Methods of Characterization

Abstract

This present research examines the representation of the United States in Syrian conflict as evidenced in the BBC International and the BBC Indonesia articles by using van Dijk’ssociocognition framework (2009a 2009b). This research employed qualitative method to describe the representation and its significance. Drawing on 10 online articles from the BBC International and the BBC Indonesia, it was found that the U.S. is represented as the Globo-cop who controls the plot in Syrian conflict. The representation is indicated by three indicators, namely: the U.S. is a firm and powerful country, the U.S. is intimate with the Opposition, and the U.S. is the Opposition group helper. In addition, through sociocognition and context analyses, it was revealed that the ideology of the BBC International and BBC Indonesia is shaped by the culture of their owners. However, the different level of representation of the U.S in the two news corporations is influenced by their target readers. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Sociocognition, Van Dijk, Representation, Translation Media, Syrian Conflict. Keywords: Critical Discourse Analysis, Sociocognition, Van Dijk, Representation, Translation Media, Syrian Conflict.

Abstract

The present study, entitled Grice’s Conversational Implicature in Written Short Humor Dialogues examines the types of conversational implicature, hidden messages which are generated in written short humor dialogues, and audience’s responses to implicatures. The present study uses 45 written short humor dialogues which are taken from www.squackle.com, www.lotsofjokes.com, www.englishindo.com, and www.jokes4u.com. The data were analyzed qualitatively by using Grice’s conversational implicature (1975). The study is also supported by Hay’s humor support strategies (2003) to analyze the audience’s responses toward implicature. The study discovers that particularized conversational implicature is the only type of conversational implicature which appears in written short humor dialogues. Those particularized implicatures are generated through the failure in observing maxims, in the form of flouts. Moreover, flouts maxim of relation is the mostly flouted in the written short humor dialogues with 39 occurrences (86.7%) from 45 occurrences. With regard to audience’s responses, they are obtained through a short interview with 20 students from English Education Department. The result of the interviews demonstrates that the audiences only use three strategies proposed by Hay (2003) which are ‘contributing more humor’ (53%), ‘humor is support strategy itself’ (22%), and ‘mixed strategy’ (1%) between ‘contributing more humor’ and ‘offering sympathy’. All in all, the findings indicate that humors are easily made by flouting maxims. In addition, the audience’s responses signify that the humor is funny and entertaining. Keywords: Conversational Implicature, Implicature, Maxims, Audience’s responses, Written Short Humor Dialogues

Abstract

This present research examined narrative features used to reframe Egypt military coup news. The data were in the form of two articles taken from Al-Arabiya as the source texts and two articles taken from Kompas as the target texts. This research employed qualitative approach and descriptive method as research design and textual analysis to collect the data. To analyse the data, this research used narrative theory proposed by Baker (2010a). According to the results, this research showed that narrative features used are selective appropriation, temporality, and relationality. Selective appropriation is the most frequently used in this study which means that the texts were purposively selected to represent the target text news agency. By using temporality, the texts underwent an adjustment of time with the time in the target texts. In addition, temporality also made the texts reveal a distance between the readers and the place where the incident happened. Furthermore, by applying relationality, the texts underwent an adjustment with the understanding which existed in the target texts. Based on the findings, this study concludes that Al-Arabiya tended to support Ikhwanul Muslmin and Kompas tended to support Egypt military. Keywords: Narrative, Narrative Features, Reframing, and News
