Abstract

This study aims to examine the language features used by Indonesian food-vloggers of different genders as well as the functions of each feature in their utterances. Six Indonesian food-vloggers of different genders were selected as the data. This study used a descriptive qualitative method and differential language analysis to analyse the data. The results show that out of seven features, there were only six features that have classified as women and men’s language features used by both women and men food-vloggers; namely, lexical hedges (30 times in women utterances and 40 times in men utterances), followed by compliment (25 in women utterances and 15 times in men utterances), command and directives (13 times in women utterances and 14 times in men utterances), swear and taboo words (14 times in women utterances and 11 times in men utterances), question (11 times in women utterances and 9 times in men utterances), tag question (6 times in women utterances and 11 times in men utterances) and no minimal response feature is found. Regarding functions, the food-vloggers use hedging to damp down the statement force; say positive compliment to show satisfaction; give command and direct to make the interaction done properly; swear to show dissatisfaction; ask questions to make their viewers more involved in the interactions; use tag questions to confirm what the speakers have said. The findings show that males tend to be the dominant ones who applied the language features compared to the females’ food-vloggers. This may be due to the image of men in the society which is depicted as the masculine one, and to have masculine character means that they have to perform it. Therefore, these male food-vloggers make sure that their character as the food-vloggers could match with the viewers' expectations of how good vloggers should be, and one of the strategies is by communicating well enough with the viewers by using the language features. Abstract

A slip of the tongue is one of the speech errors that often encounter in everyday life. Many people may have experienced this phenomenon either consciously or not. However, it would be different when a public figure made slips of the tongue. One of the Indonesian female singers has been viral on social media because of slips of the tongue that she made. She frequently made slips of the tongue when speaking in front of people. Thus, the study is conducted to investigate the phenomenon of slips of the tongue of this singer by revealing the mistakes found in the process of the articulatory program of her utterances, the dominant types of slips of the tongue used by her, and the causes of slips of the tongue. Furthermore, the study is based on a qualitative case study. The data were obtained by downloading three YouTube videos that contained the compilation video of slips of the tongue by the singer and her interview video with Sarah Sechan Talk Show as well as Narasi Entertainment’s Podcast. The transcriptions of the three videos became the source of the data. The study uses the theory from Garrett (1975) about the process of the articulatory program and Clark and Clark (1977) about types of slips of the tongue and factors of speech error. This study also uses the theory from Carroll (1986) about other types of slips of the tongue which are addition and deletion to analyze the data. This study has revealed that this Indonesian female singer mostly made mistakes in the process of phonetic segments as many as 33 times. It was also found that substitution is the dominant type of slips of the tongue that used in the video, as many as 22 times. Moreover, the causes of slips of the tongue were cognitive difficulty and social factors. Keywords: Speech error; slips of the tongue; one of the Indonesian female singers.

Abstract

Research on text modifications has been around since the 80s until the present day. These studies have come a long way from manual text modification methods to the use of computerized models in its present form. However, there seems to be no resolution to the question of whether modified texts can help language learning. This study went back to the basics, manually modifying a text to find out whether it can help non-native English readers’ English reading comprehension. A text taken from a semiotic textbook was modified using the text modification strategies outlined by Parker Chaudron (1987). The text was then given to an experiment group comprising of 7th semester students studying linguistics at Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. Having read the text, these students were given a written test alongside a questionnaire. Their scores and their attitudes toward the modified text (from the written test the questionnaire, respectively) were taken to measure and compare with the scores and attitudes of a control group reading the original text. The results showed a difference between the scores of students in the control group and those in the experiment group, with the latter having more students who scored high. There are also more students in the experiment group with a positive attitude toward the text they read compared to those in the control group. However, the difference in scores proved to be statistically not significant, and also most students who viewed the modified text positively scored low on the written test. Keywords: Elaboration of text, simplification of text, text modifications

Abstract

This study is a transitivity analysis of the novel To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee (1960). This study aims to investigate representation of a colored man named Tom Robinson through the types of process related to Tom Robinson. By using qualitative research, the research used the theory of Transitivity proposed by Halliday (1994). The data sources were in the form of eighteen clauses that specifically represent Tom Robinson and were sorted by concordance software Antconc 3.8.1. The findings of the research showed that there are four processes found in the clauses related to the character. Material process is the most frequent process (50%) followed by Relational process (27%) which are divided into two: Attributive Relational process (22%) and Identifying Relational Process (5%), Mental process (17%), and Verbal process (7%) are the second lowest and least frequent type in this research. The result of the research indicates that Tom Robinson as one of the people of color in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird is represented as a man who experienced social injustice. Keywords: Representation, Systemic Functional Linguistics, Ideational Meaning, Transitivity

Abstract

It has been a recent trend for video games to include story as part of the gameplay to further enhance the players experience in playing. However, as any other form in literature which may portray social issues within the story, games also have the same possibility to portray social issues, such as power. Because of this reason, the present study aims to investigate how power manifests among characters in a video game, Suikoden V. The study uses a qualitative method, and uses the theoretical framework from French and Raven (2008) to categorize the data acquired. Foucault’s (1982) theory of power is also used to analyze the findings. The present study finds that power is exercised frequently by the people of authority and in higher position such as nobles and leaders. Power often exercised for two major purposes. The first is for the leaders to control the people, and the second is to construct identities which allow the leaders to control the people more efficiently. The findings revealed how the leaders are able to construct the society through the use of various types of power. Keywords: characters, power, power relation, video games, French and Raven, Foucault.

Abstract

YouTube has now become one of the most successful video-sharing platforms used by many people around the world. It seems that one of the reasons why people tend to choose YouTube rather than any other video-sharing platform is the attractive headline. This study aims to reveal the realization of interpersonal meaning in YouTube video headlines and to reveal the realization of interpersonal meaning in different types of headlines. This study is largely qualitative supported by descriptive quantification. The data include a hundred headlines collected from Jay Shetty’s channel on YouTube. In order to find out the realization of interpersonal meaning, the headlines are categorized based on the speech function and its typicality proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2014). The headlines are also categorized by using Maslen’s (2010) types of headlines. There are two findings of this study. Firstly, four initiating speech functions are realized in Jay Shetty’s headlines namely statement, question, command, and offer. The dominant speech function found in this study is offer, which is realized untypically in the imperative mood. Secondly, the dominant type of headlines found in this study is the headlines that arouse the curiosity of the readers. This type of headline appears in all of the speech functions found in this study. Keywords: Interpersonal meaning; speech function; types of headlines; typicality.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze trauma in short story "The Black Cat" (1843) by Edgar Allan Poe. Trauma in a way can be described as a recollecting memory of unpleasant events that may harm the mind of the one who suffers it. Studies on trauma in Poe's story are mentioned in Journal The Edgar Allan Poe Review (2019) as part of its further study on Poe's works. To fill the gaps in the research on "The Black Cat", this study aims to analyze the construction of trauma in the story and its effect on the story in narrative form. The data is analyzed using textual analysis trough close reading activity. The data then is interpreted using Caruth’s (1996) model on analyzing trauma in literature. The results show that (1) trauma is suffered through narrator’s attachment with the cat, (2) narrator’s regret of his wrongful violence, (3) through the repeating appearance of the cat, the trauma is reconstructed in the story, and (4) through trauma the character suffer mental deteriorations. The research concludes that trauma patterns based on Caruth's (1996) study appear in the story and it may help further study narrative in trauma study. Keywords: Trauma, Edgar Allan Poe, Cathy Caruth, The Black Cat, Narrative

Abstract

This case study explored the unlikely phenomenon of the use of humor in academic lectures. The previous studies in this area have shown that, though traditionally unlikely, humor is commonly used as a linguistic strategy in academic discourse. Therefore, this case study aims to contribute to the literature of Indonesian academic discourse by examining the creation and functions of humor in Indonesian academic lectures. Through the descriptive qualitative method, this study analyzed five classroom lectures of English Literature major in Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia. After the lectures were transcribed according to Jefferson’s (2004) transcription convention, the question of the creation of humor was answered based on Grice’s (1975) conversational maxim theory. This analysis discovered that there was a slight inclination to create humor by flouting the Maxim of Quality in the data, which implies that the lecturers tend to rely on untruthfulness to create jokes. Afterward, the function is analyzed based on Nesi’s (2012) theory of functions of humor in academic contexts, and it was found that the lecturers mostly used humor to build rapport with the students. Keywords: Academic context, Conversational maxims, Cooperative principles, Humor, Functions of humor, Pragmatics

Abstract

The issues regarding gender hegemony in literary works have been widely discussed; yet only few relate the issue to non-human characters. Non-human characters, in this case, are characters which are technologically made and thought-driven being with a lesser capacity for emotion. This study was conducted to investigate how gender hegemony for non-human characters is constructed in a film. The non-human characters that were analyzed are K and Joi from Blade Runner 2049 (2017), a science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve. K is portrayed as a male synthetic being called the replicant, while Joi is portrayed as a female holographic digital companion called a DiJi. To investigate gender hegemony among the characters, this study applied Schipper’s (2007) framework of gender hegemony, Boggs and Petrie’s (2008) theory of characterization, and Heintz and Stracey’s (2006) film elements to analyze the hierarchy of masculinity and femininity in the film. The analysis revealed that the gender hegemony in the film is constructed through the exploitation of characterization, particularly between K and Joi who are presented with stereotypical hierarchical gender characteristics. These stereotypical characteristics created a gendered hegemony revolving around three major themes, namely love, loyalty, and revenge. Further exploration implies that, because the gender hegemony is very embedded in the film, the filmmaker could not offer an alternative of male-female relationships for non-human characters. Keywords: Blade Runner, femininity, gender hegemony, masculinity, non-human characters

Abstract

Different genres are used to address bullying as a social problem. This research investigates bullying in a film, Wonder (2017) which uses an elementary school as the locus of the story. The research aims to determine how the film depicts bullying in an elementary school and what messages are conveyed from the presentations. The researcher uses Coloroso's (2015) theory of bullying and Boggs Petrie's (2008) theory of characterization in films to analyze the presentation of bullying in films and the messages conveyed from the presentation. The research discovered that there are three types of bullying depicted in the film. They are verbal, physical, and relational bullying. The findings indicate that bullying does happen in elementary schools, the bullying victim tends to remain silent, and people around the victim tend to ignore the occurrence. The film suggests that bullying is an issue for society to be aware of. The research then suggests that this kind of issue should be addressed in other literary genres as bullying presentation in literary genres can be used as the tool for learning the ways to solve bullying and sharing perspectives of people who are affected by bullying.
