Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of implementing Joyful Learning on the English vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Gunungsitoli Selatan. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 34 students, including 20 in the experimental class and 14 in the control class, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using pretests and posttests and analyzed through descriptive statistics, Normalized Gain (N-Gain), normality, homogeneity, and independent sample t-tests. The experimental class mean score increased from 56.60 to 67.40 with an average N-Gain of 0.25, while the control class increased from 46.79 to 48.43, with an average N-Gain of 0.03. The homogeneity test showed a significance value of 0.690 > 0.05. The hypothesis test yielded a t-value of 3.689 and a significance value of 0.002 < 0.05, indicating that Joyful Learning significantly improved students' English vocabulary mastery.

Abstract

Teacher professional identity plays a crucial role in shaping instructional practices and students' learning experiences. However, limited research has examined how English teachers construct their professional identity within the unique context of Indonesian Islamic boarding schools. This study investigated the professional identity construction of English teachers by exploring its formation, influencing factors, negotiation with Islamic values, and enactment in classroom practice. Employing a qualitative multiple case study, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, document analysis, and students' achievement records. The findings reveal that teachers construct their professional identity as both language educators and moral mentors, shaped by personal beliefs, institutional culture, and Islamic values. They actively negotiate English language teaching with religious principles by adapting instructional materials and classroom practices while maintaining communicative learning objectives. The study concludes that teachers' professional identity is dynamic, context-dependent, and fundamental to culturally responsive English language teaching in Islamic boarding schools.
