Abstract

English language learning in higher education requires innovative approaches that enhance student engagement and meaningful learning experiences. This study aims to analyze the implementation of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in the English course at the Primary Islamic Teacher Education (PGMI) Study Program of Institut Agama Islam Ngawi. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through observations, interviews with lecturers and students, and analysis of learning documents such as the Semester Learning Plan and teaching modules. Data analysis followed the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the implementation of PjBL increases student participation, promotes collaboration, and provides more contextual learning experiences through project activities and English presentations. Future research is recommended to examine the effectiveness of PjBL in improving English language skills and integrating it with digital learning technologies.

Abstract

Listening is a key part of learning a language as it helps learners understand what people are saying. Many English as a foreign language learners find it hard to understand listening materials because they don't get enough practice with organized listening texts and proper teaching methods. Therefore, this study aims to investigate EFL students’ perceptions of learning listening through recount texts using a genre-based approach. The study used a descriptive qualitative research design.  The participants were the private senior high school students Data were collected through a structured questionnaire comprising 20 items that assessed four indicators of students’ perceptions: the perceived usefulness of recount texts, learning engagement and motivation, clarity of genre-based learning stages, and perceived improvement in listening comprehension. The findings show that students mostly have good feelings about learning to listen by using recount texts with a genre-based method and help them better understand the order of events in listening passages and makes it easier to find important information in spoken texts.  The organized steps of the genre-based method help them stay involved and offer a clear way to learn during listening activities.  The implication of the study shows that combining teaching based on different genres with listening activities can improve students' learning and help them better understand what they hear in English language classes

Abstract

This study investigates the experiences of both students and teachers in applying the HyFlex model for English reading instruction in Indonesian vocational schools. A qualitative interview method was employed to gather data from participants, which were then analyzed using thematic analysis guided by Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory. The results indicate that HyFlex learning offers greater flexibility, enhances student motivation, and supports the development of reading skills. Nevertheless, several challenges were identified, including unstable internet connectivity, limited technological resources, and issues related to student discipline. The findings emphasize the crucial role of adequate technological infrastructure and effective pedagogical preparation in ensuring the successful implementation of the HyFlex model.

Abstract

This study investigates how translation shifts reconstruct the pragmatic force of directive speech acts in Indonesian movie subtitles. Focusing on the film Murder Mystery, this research aims to examine (1) how translation shifts affect the pragmatic force of directives, (2) which types of shifts are most frequently associated with pragmatic change, and (3) why such pragmatic modifications tend to occur in subtitling. Using a descriptive qualitative research, 59 directive utterances were identified and analyzed based on speech act theory and Catford's translation shift framework. The findings reveal that translation shifts systematically reshape directive force, resulting in three major pragmatic patterns: pragmatic weakening, pragmatic strengthening, and pragmatic reorientation. Pragmatic weakening emerges as the most frequent effect, indicating a tendency of Indonesian subtitles to reduce impositive force and urgency. Structure shifts are found to be the most dominant and most pragmatically consequential type, followed by unit and class shifts. The study further shows that pragmatic modification is motivated by the technical constraints of subtitling, cross-linguistic differences, socio-pragmatic adaptation, and the multimodal nature of audiovisual texts. This study contributes to pragmatic-oriented translation research by demonstrating that subtitling operates as a pragmatically transformative process rather than a purely linguistic transfer.

Abstract

This study aims to find specific types of speech acts and their intended meanings in Sinners movie. The writer used a descriptive qualitative approach to conduct the research. The writer gathered data from a movie script which provided speech transcripts. Sinners is a 2025 American horror film produced, written, and directed by Ryan Coogler. From the analysis, the writer identified three different types of speech acts that the movie used. The data used Searle’s theory. They are the locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. The writer also discovered that the illocutionary act can be grouped into five different types. They showed 4 assertive cases which most are affirming; 13 acts of directives including commanding and requesting; 8 commisives including promising, threatening, and vowing; 7 expressives, and 3 declarative ones are mainly used as statements. The most common kind of speech act is one where someone makes a direct statement to ask or to request, namely directives. Meanwhile, the most common type of illocutionary function the movie used is the promising function. From this study, we can see the different range of speech acts employed by the characters in Sinners and their impact on communication within the narrative.

Abstract

This study examines the use of figurative language and contextual meaning in Nahdlatul Wathan (NW) poetic verses written by TGKH. Muhammad Zainuddin Abdul Madjid. This topic is important because Wasiat Renungan Masa Pengalaman Baru functions not only as a medium of religious preaching and education, but also as a representation of moral, social, religious, and cultural values conveyed through figurative expressions. The study aims to identify the types of figurative language based on Leech's theory (1969,2014) and analyze their contextual meanings using the theory proposed by Dancygier & Sweetser (2014). This research employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data consisted of Wasiat Renungan Masa Pengalaman Baru verses containing figurative expressions. Data were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed by classifying figurative language types and interpreting their contextual meanings within the religious, cultural, and social context of Sasak society. The findings reveal seven dominant types of figurative language: metaphor, hyperbole, metonymy, simile, personification, litotes, and synecdoche. Metaphor appeared as the most dominant type because it effectively conveyed spiritual, moral, and ideological messages symbolically. Furthermore, the contextual meanings reflected religious values, educational principles, loyalty, socio-cultural identity, and criticism toward political and moral behavior in society. This study contributes to the development of stylistic and contextual semantic studies, particularly in Indonesian local religious literary works.

Abstract

This study examines the use of slang by Generation Z on the TikTok platform from a sociolinguistic perspective. The development of social media has encouraged the emergence of new language variations that reflect the creativity, identity, and interaction patterns of digital users. This study aims to identify the forms, meanings, and social functions of slang used by Generation Z in TikTok communication. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with a sociolinguistic approach. The data were collected from TikTok content, including videos, captions, and comments containing slang expressions used by Generation Z users. The data were gathered through observation and documentation techniques and analyzed based on Allan and Burridge’s theory of slang classification, Traugott and Dasher’s theory of semantic change, and Tajfel’s social identity theory. The findings reveal that slang used by Generation Z consists of five types: clipping, imitative, fresh and creative, flippant, and acronym. Clipping appears as the most dominant type, indicating Generation Z’s tendency to use concise and practical language in digital communication. Furthermore, several slang expressions experience meaning changes depending on their social context. This study highlights that slang functions not only as an informal communication style but also as a medium for identity construction, self-expression, and strengthening social relationships within digital communities.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the problems faced by English teachers in improving student’ achievement at MTS Raudlatul Falah. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design to explore teachers’ readiness and the challenges encountered in the teaching ang learning process. The study was conducted at MTS Raudlatul Falah involving two English teachers and several eighth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using the interactive model of miles, Huberman, and Saldana, including data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings showed that English teachers had generally prepared learning materials based on the curriculum, syllabus, lesson plans, and textbooks; however, the development of contextual and authentic materials remained limited. In terms of teaching methods, teachers employed lectures, question and answer sessions, assignment, discussions, and simple conversation practices, yet teacher centered instruction was still dominant. The use of learning media was also limited, with teachers relying mostly on textbooks and basic classroom facilities. These conditions effected students’ motivation, participation, vocabulary mastery, pronunciation practice, and in summary English learning achievement.

Abstract

This study explored how students utilized brainstorming using journalistic questions in recount text writing. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed with 38 eleventh-grade students from SMK Negeri 2 Palangka Raya. Data were collected through brainstorming sheets, students’ written texts, and semi-structured interviews. Only data meeting the criteria of completeness, legibility, topic diversity, and variation in writing ability were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis. The findings indicate that brainstorming using journalistic questions effectively helped students generate and organize ideas for recount writing. However, it was less effective in supporting idea development. This limitation was associated with students’ limited vocabulary, lack of confidence, and selective omission of details. Brainstorming was most beneficial for high and moderate achievers, while low achievers required additional support to develop their ideas into complete texts. These findings provide practical implications for improving EFL writing instruction.

Abstract

This research explores students’ learning experiences in using the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) method to support reading comprehension at MAN 1 OKI. The researcher uses a qualitative descriptive approach to examine students’ perceptions, participation, and challenges during the implementation of TPS in English reading activities. The data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that TPS encourages students to become more active, confident, and engaged through individual thinking, peer discussion, and classroom sharing activities. The method also helps students construct meaning from texts collaboratively. However, several challenges were found, including limited vocabulary, time constraints, and differences in students’ participation levels. The findings highlight that Think-Pair-Share can create a more interactive learning environment and support students’ reading comprehension development.
