Abstract

Majapahit (Crescentia cujete L.) leaves contain secondary metabolites, particularly flavonoids, which exert analgesic effects by inhibiting cyclooxygenase activity, thereby reducing prostaglandin biosynthesis from arachidonic acid and alleviating pain. This study evaluated the analgesic efficacy of an ethanolic extract of Majapahit leaves in male Swiss Webster mice using the hot plate method. Pain responses were recorded at 0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 min post-administration. The results demonstrated that the optimal analgesic effect was achieved at a dose of 375 mg/kg body weight (BW), yielding an efficacy level of 82.80%, which was comparable to the positive control group treated with mefenamic acid. Statistical analysis performed using SPSS via one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD post-hoc test revealed no significant difference between the 375 mg/kg BW dose group and the positive control group (p > 0.05). These findings indicate that the 375 mg/kg BW dose has potential as an effective analgesic dose and may provide a basis for further investigation into its development and application as a potential analgesic agent.

Abstract

The increasing demand for energy storage devices has encouraged the development of alternative silica-based anode materials. This study aimed to synthesize and characterize a silica/carbon (SiO₂/C) composite using geothermal waste as the silica source and coconut shell charcoal as the carbon source. Silica was synthesized using the sol-gel method, while activated carbon was prepared through carbonization at 700 °C and activation with 3 M KOH. SiO₂/C composites were synthesized by the solid-state method at SiO₂-to-carbon mass ratios of 1:4, 1:9, and 1:19, followed by calcination at 500 °C.  Characterization was conducted using XRF, FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDS, and titrimetric analysis. The synthesized silica contained 93.50% SiO₂. FTIR confirmed the presence of Si–O–Si, Si–OH, and C=C groups, XRD indicated an amorphous structure, and SEM-EDS revealed irregular particle morphology. The SiO₂-to-activated carbon mass ratio influenced the composite surface area and yield, with the 1:19 ratio exhibiting the highest estimated surface area of 321.8635 m²/g and the highest yield of 96.01%.

Abstract

Gelatin, a protein derived from collagen, is widely used in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. The use of conventional porcine-derived gelatin raises concerns about halal compliance, highlighting the need to develop alternative gelatin sources acceptable to a broader range of consumers. This study successfully produced halal gelatin from goat skin through enzymatic extraction using a mixture of proteases produced by indigenous bacterial isolates MSF6 and MSF11. Optimal protease production was achieved on day 2 at pH 9 and 37 °C, while maximum protease activity was observed at pH 9 and 57 °C. The highest gelatin recovery (78.93%) was obtained using a 3:1 ratio of crude protease extracts from MSF6 and MSF11. ATR-FTIR analysis revealed characteristic amide A and amide I absorption bands, while SDS-PAGE analysis showed a predominant protein band with a molecular weight of 66.34 ± 2.65 kDa. The extracted gelatin exhibited a gelling temperature of 8 °C, a pH of 7.56, and a gel strength of 19.9 Bloom.
