Abstract

Brachytherapy is a type of radiotherapy used to treat prostate, cervical, breast and other cancers. As a radiation source, iridium-192 radioisotope is packaged in micro-capsules of 316L stainless steel with an inner diameter of 0.6 mm; an outer diameter of 1.2 mm and a length of 4.5 mm known as a high dose rate brachytherapy. Iridium-192 is a beta transmitter radioisotope with energies of 530 - 670 keV and also emits gamma radiation (γ) at average energy of 370 keV with a half-life (t½) of 73.83 days. The iridium-192 was produced from irradiation of the natural iridium wire target in nuclear reactor. The aim of this study is to determine the maximum irradiation time in order to obtain Ir-192 radioactivity in the amount of 10 Ci which meets the requirements for high dose rate brachytherapy. The irradiation of2 pieces of 99.9% natural iridium wire has been carried out in the G.A. Siwabessy reactor for ± 4 months with a 1.2 x 1014 n/cm2/second neutron flux.

Abstract

The use of membrane on separation has been widely studied. In this study, the Chitosan-silicapolyethylene glycol (Ch/Si/P) solid membrane is prepared and performed adsorption test for bivalent metal ions, including Pb(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II), and Rhodamine B dye in textile waste water. The Ch/Si/P composite membrane is made by mixing of chitosan, silica (extracted from ash hulk) and polyethylene glycol with ratio 1: 0.8: 0.5 (w/w). The performance of membrane is carried out using dead end method. The result shows that membrane has a heteregenous and very tight structure. On the other hand, commercial membrane shows a fibrous structure. The rejection test shows that the selectivity of Ch/Si/P solid membrane increases from Cu(II)> Cd(II)> Pb(II)> Rhodamine B. In comparison, the commercial membrane shows the selectivity in the sequence of Rhodamine B > Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Cu(II). It is clearly observed that Ch/Si/P solid membrane for bivalen metal ions is better than commercially available, and it indicates that functional group spread on the surface acts as a binding site.

Abstract

Biodiesel is a promising energy alternative to substitute fossil fuels. Another reason is the productionprocess using a homogeneous catalyst that has many disadvantages. Raw materials using palm oils which is expensive, also compete with the food industry. Heterogeneous catalyst substitution of homogeneous catalysts and using kapok seed oil as raw material is a promising strategy for mass biodiesel production. This research focuses on developing heterogeneous catalyst CuO-ZnO buffered γ-Al2O3 for transesterification of kapok seed oil. We concern about the effect of calcination temperature and CuO loading. Catalyst synthesis using the sol-gel method. Catalyst characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, scanning electron microscope-EDX (SEM-EDX) and Brunnauer-Emmet Teller (BET). The catalyst activity test was applied to the transesterification of kapok seed oil with methanol in glass type batch reactor. CuO-ZnO/γ-Al2O3 was successfully synthesized quite well and potentially could be used as heterogeneous catalyst from kapok seed oil.

Abstract

The development of Samarium-based bioceramics, in the form of a seed, has the opportunity of solidcancers treatment using the brachytherapy method. Brachytherapy is a radiotherapy procedure whereradioactive sources is placed inside to theneo-plastic cancer tissues by implantation. This method canincrease radiation doses on the cancer tissues by applying a tiny radiation source. The ceramic seeds with Samarium-153, is biodegradable and beta-emitter radionuclide, is very likely to replace existing method of brachytherapy using radioactive metal-seeds. The raw material of ceramic seeds with samarium consists of samarium nitrate as samarium precursor and isotope target, calcium nitrate hydrate (Ca(NO3)2.4H2O as filler, and tetraethyl orthosilicate (Si(OC2H5)4 as a additive. Synthesis of ceramic seeds with samarium was conducted by sol gelprocesings, sintering, mixing with Polivynil Alcohol (PVA), molding and combusting. The raw material mixtures of ceramic seeds with samarium is characterized by thermogravimetry analysis (TGA). The morphology of ceramic seed both before and after combustion is analyzed by scanning electron microscope (SEM-EDX) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Based on TGA analysis. The raw materials mixtures of the ceramic seeds was decomposed at temperature of 100 oC - 550 oC.

Abstract

Rice husk is an agricultural waste and contains lignin (20-25%). NaOH, ethanol and acetic acid solvents are commonly used solvents in lignin isolation because they produce sulfur-free and high purity lignin. Lignin has potential as an adsorbent due to the presence of hydroxyl groups and aromatic rings that can bind to metal ions. The purpose of this study was to find out the best solvent in isolating lignin from rice husks, the characteristics of lignin, and the ability of lignin from rice husks as an adsorbent of Cd (II) metal. The quantitative laboratory research conducted was lignin characterization using FTIR and SEM and test the ability of the adorbent to absorb Cd (II) ions using the AAS instrument. Lignin isolated using NaOH solvent is more effective and efficient because it produces large amounts of lignin compared to ethanol and acetic acid. The isolated lignin has an absorption band in the area of 3500-3200 cm-1, namely the O-H stretch and 1600 cm-1, namely the vibrations of the aromatic and has spherical surface morphology in SEM instrumentation. Lignin was applied as a Cd (II) adsorbent and had the greatest adsorption capacity of A and B at a concentration of 2.0 ppm.

Abstract

Beach sand in Indonesia contains high silica crystals in the form of SiO2. High purity silica can be usedas a raw material for zeolite synthesis, one of them is ZSM-5 (Zeolite Socony Mobile-5). ZSM-5 can be used as a catalyst because it has advantages in structure and temperature resistance. Therefore, ZSM-5 is expensive so that if it can be synthesized by ourselves, it is very profitable. The research aims to determine the effect of the composition of SiO2 / Al2O3 in synthesis of ZSM-5 from beach sand silica. The research was done in 3 stages consist of (1) purification of beach sand, (2) extraction of beach sand silica, and (3) synthesis of ZSM-5. The results of the research showed that (1) the purity of extracted silica was 97.2%, (2) the composition of Si87Al9 resulted ZSM-5 better than that of Si89Al7.

Abstract

The potential of palm empty fruit bunch (EFB) ash as a base catalyst for hydrogen production fromhydrolysis of water with Aluminium has been inverstigated by using a simple hand-made reactor. This study was preceded by using conventional bases, NaOH and KOH, then compared with the use of K2CO3 and EFB ash as catalysts. The catalyst was prepared by ashing the EFB at 600oC for 2 h. Characterization of catalyst was conducted by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) methods. EFB ash contains potassium in K2CO3 and KCl form, with total potassium of 29.3% by weight. Water hydrolysis was carried out by reacting 0.01 g of Aluminum with various concentrations of KOH, NaOH, K2CO3 solutions, and EFB ash filtrates. The increasing of catalysts concentration caused the enhancement of hydrogen gas produced. The highest conversion of hydrolysis reaction was obtained by the application of KOH as a catalyst. The utilization of NaOH leads the reaction faster. K2CO3 and EFB ash filtrate also can be used to produce hydrogen with a high enough quantity but slower.
