Abstract

This article concerns a study whose objective is to explain several issuesrelated to (1) a description of the domination, hegemony, and subordination ofcharacters in a novel, (2) the function of the power culture experienced by thecharacters, and (3) the meaning of power deconstruction in the novel. To reach the objective, the researcher conducting the study employs aqualitative-descriptive method. The source of data is the novel Dari Fontenay keMagallianes by Nh. Dini. The data are in the form of extracts taken from the noveland, complemented with the researcher's thoughts pertaining to issues related tosociety and power, collected through documentation and literary study withthorough understanding. Data validity is confirmed by employing a series of suchtechniques as (1) careful observation, (2) adequate literary reference, (3) peerdiscussion among parties sharing interest in literary works, and (4) triangulationby searching available articles for related information about the novelistconcerned. The results of the study show the following. (1) The types of powerdescribed in the novel are greatly reflected in the behavior of a character's husbandtoward his family (wife and children) and his colleagues. The power types could beexposed through the husband's attitude, ideology, and behavior in response to thesurrounding environment as part of his community. (2) The power culturefunctions to provide some characters with experiences suggesting that some socialissues have to be overcome by way of different unsatisfactory treatments. Inaddition, the power functions as a "bond" that makes someone obey what isinstructed by the one who is in power. (3) An analysis on the meaning of the powermanifested in the text through female characters shows that it is a kind of counterdiscourseagainst the hegemony of the central power. Keywords: current thought movement, new perspective

Abstract

Besides being one of the efforts to have texts transformed into Indonesian, this article also aims at studying and describing the pitutur, or values reflectinggood character, in the Javanese text Tiyang Tani lan Tikus. The text Tiyang Tani lan Tikus (TTT) is one of the texts contained in thecodex Serat Dongeng Warni-Warni and belongs to the category of literarymanuscripts. The codex is part of a collection stored at the library of Sana Budaya,Yogyakarta, given the code number PB C 154 71 Rol. 144 No. 13. The manuscriptis in prose using Javanese orthography. It tells a story but the time of its writing andthe name of the person who copied it in writing are not mentioned. However, inview of the condition of the paper used, it could be estimated that it was written inthSurakarta early in the 20 century. The essential values of good character contained in the story of TiyangTani lan Tikus are of (1) simplicity in life, (2) empathy, (3) softness of heart, (4)loyalty or faithfulness, (5) spirit of togetherness, (6) love toward others, and (7)frugality. All those values could be developed into material for the teaching ofvalues to children. This is an important matter because, in one's development, childhood is a sensitive period for the optimum development of somepsychological aspects if the environment could give adequate stimulation. Storiesor fables told to children could become a means of stimulating the development ofsome psychological aspects of children so that they could hopefully gain theuppermost boundary of their range of potential development. Keywords: Javanese classical fables, values of good character

Abstract

Students in general have difficulty in expressing their ideas in writing. This indicates that the teaching of writing is not yet successful. The lack of successis due to, among others, the dominance of theoretical explanation and discussionof how to develop good paragraphs and how to use punctuation correctly in classesof writing. Such teaching behavior may be urged by an underlying belief thatknowledge of writing and mastery of the language used are the main factorsdetermining writing ability. But current research results indicate that writing is acognitive process greatly determined by the thinking or reasoning ability. So theprocess of writing will be hindered when the process of reasoning experiences adead end or cognitive blocking. On the other hand, a reasoning process which runswell produces ideas which then demand expression. The pressure for expressionurges the owner of the ideas to study good language use and how to express ideas inan organized way. Therefore, the teaching of writing had better focus on improvingthinking quality and minimizing cognitive blocking. Keywords: the teaching of writing, cognitive blocking

Abstract

There has been an interesting phenomenon beginning late in the 20stcentury and lasting until early in the 21 century in Indonesian literary history: thegreat number of women writers suddenly producing literary works. In denial of theidea that it has been a phenomenon occurring all of a sudden, there has been aprecedent that could not be ignored: the number of Indonesian women writerscoming into activity far before the 1920s, the period becoming a milestonemarking the start of modern Indonesian literature, itself resulting from an impactof Western acculturation. The impact appeared first in the person named Kartini, awoman writer of some renown, whose achievement in the literary world is oftenunmentioned. The absence of women writers in the past from lists of knownwriters was often related to activities of placing their role on the sidelines by, forexample, not categorizing them writers of literary works or writers of qualityliterature (they being considered merely writers of popular literature) orcategorizing them merely happy-go-lucky writers and not the mainrepresentatives of their generation of writers. One may wonder whether the recentacknowledgement of Ayu Utami in Angkatan 2000 Sastra Indonesia as a pioneerin novel writing has been one of the strategies to bring about something contrary towhat has happened to those women writers in the past. It seems that the recentemergence of the aforementioned great number of women writers has not beenautomatically related to the efforts made by the feminist movement. A writer whohas made efforts for the sake of Kartini's fate is a male writer: Pramudya AnantaToer. Keywords : women writers, feminism, Indonesian literary history, role ofhistorical writing

Abstract

This article explains the phonological deviations in Indonesian utterancesof children with the age range from 1.0 to 2.6, which represents a stage of languagedevelopment with the children of the age range from 1.0 to 1.6 producing their firstsingle-word utterances (SWU), those of the age range from 1.6 to 2.0 producingtheir first word combinations (FWC), and those of the age range from 2.0 to 2.6producing their first simple and complex sentences (SCS). The data show that 11phonological deviation patterns are found in SWU, 13 phonological deviationpatterns are found in FWC, and 7 phonological deviation patterns are found inSCS. On the basis of these available patterns, it could be stated that (1) the mostproductive patterns are stopping, gliding, nasalizing, and cluster reduction, (2) thedeviation patterns tend to decrease as age increases, (3) as children get older, thereduplication pattern is abandoned and the deletion pattern decreases, and (4) alateralization pattern occurs when children begin producing SCS. Most of thepatterns are universal since they also occur in the utterances of subjects of otherresearchers. Keywords : patterns of phonological deviations, children utterances, underlyingrepresentation, phonetic representation, SWU, FWC, SCS

Abstract

This article is about a socio-pragmatic study on the language used by theJavanese society which has some speech levels (or unggah-ungguh in Javanese)called ngoko, krama madya, and krama inggil and the language used by the Bataksociety which does not have such speech levels. The difference concerning speech levels between the two societies isinfluenced by their traditional ways of living. The traditional Javanese society isdivided into two levels: the priyayi (or the nobility) and wong cilik (or thecommoner) levels. A priyayi uses ngoko in communicating with a wong cilik butthe latter cannot use it in communicating with the former. In such a case, the wongcilik uses krama inggil. This seems to indicate that solidarity in the Javanesesociety is poor. On the other hand, the Batak society does not have such levels sothat there are no speech levels in its language. Though the Batak society has manymargas, which means that any members of the society having the same last namebelong to the same marga and are regarded as members of the same family (therelevant term is dongan sabutuha), they are obliged to help other people who donot belong to their marga because the philosophy of the Batak society is dalihan natolu, which explains that solidarity in the Batak society is very important. Keywords: socio-pragmatic, ways of living, speech levels, solidarity

Abstract

A literary work as a cultural artifact is a verbal symbol that has to beinterpreted in a broad context because it correlates with the writer's intention inresponding to an experienced situation. Kerudung Santet Gandrung is a novel setin Banyuwangi representing the life of practitioners of the Gandrung traditional artand that of santris, people studying at Islamic religious boarding schools. Thereare many symbols in the novel which potentially could be seen as indications oftextual elements in the dynamic relation between the two different communities.By using a cultural hermeneutic approach, the novel strives to depict an effort inresistance made by Hasnan Singodimayan, an observer of Banyuwangi culture, toreconstruct a new and positive image of traditional artists. His resistance is anattempt to preserve Banyuwangi traditional arts which are threatened withextinction by Islamic purification movements. Keywords: novel, Gandrung, symbol, resistance

Abstract

It is already generally assumed that women possess characteristicsdistinguishing them from men. One of these characteristics is in their languageuse. Women's language is considered different from men's. In this context, theterm sexist appears. Sexist language represents women and men differently. Suchlanguage also represents women's and men's stereotypes, which is sometimesharmful to both sexes but is more often harmful to women only. Understandingwomen's language involves at least four perspective. First, women's language isperceived as a system of representation, meaning that it is a method of stating orverbalizing a certain event, experience, view, and reality in life. Second, women'slanguage is perceived as a site for social struggle containing a variety of women'sideologies. Third, women's language is perceived as showing women's corneredposition. Fourth, women's language is perceived as showing a relation betweenlanguage and gender where there is asymmetry in language representationbetween men and women. Keywords : women's language, representation, theory of domination, theory ofdifference, gender analysis

Abstract

The extent of vocabulary possessed by learners of BIPA, of BahasaIndonesia sebagai Penutur Asing, or of the Indonesian language as foreignspeakers, has a positive correlation with the extent of their achievement inmastering that language. As part of the effort to keep applying communicativeteaching, careful attention needs to be paid to the teaching of vocabulary tolearners of BIPA in order that it remains on the communicative lane and thevocabulary learned has enduring retention in their memory so that they could makeit function both as a means of communication and as a means of performing theirspeech acts. The syllabus planned for the vocabulary teaching is a curriculum modeldetermining the direction of the teaching program and describes the objectives tobe achieved in each learning activity. The syllabus design enables the teachers toformulate lesson plans that are in line with the teaching objectives to be achieved. The plan of the syllabus should be made integrally in order that the vocabularyteaching could be linked with other components like skill aspects of the targetlanguage such as function, context, and grammar as well as its cultural aspects. Keywords: vocabulary, foreign speakers, teaching
