Abstract

This study aims to describe and explain among (caring) communication represented by learning speech acts. The among communication in learning speech acts is a natural phenomenon of language use in a socio-cultural context. This was a qualitative study employing pragmatics and ethnography. Based on the data analysis, three categories of findings are obtained. First, the front speech act leads and controls the communication. Second, the middle speech act guides and encourages the communication. Third, the back speech act lets the communication be free. These represent the children’s among communication in the front, the peers’ among communication in the middle, and the adults’ among communication in the back; they are figurative, motivating, and delegating in nature.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe a model of the development of the constructivist Indonesian language teaching to optimize students’ critical thinking patterns. The study was carried out by the teachers of Junior High Schools in Tondano. The indicators of such teaching were not so apparent (only 28.42%) in the teaching andlearning process in the classroom. In other words, the  constructivist teaching behavior was very poor in relation to the development of the students’ critical thinking patterns. The following indicators showed that the constructivist teaching was not implemented yet: (1) the students were not actively involved designing, doing, and assessing the teaching activities in the classroom; (2) they were not motivated to learn from their friends in the classroom through cooperation, team work, or selfreflection;the cooperative activities were not considered as the main stimulus in the learning process; (3) the teaching and learning activities were not related to the real world, world issues or concrete problems around the students’ life; (4) the students’various life contexts were not employed and developed and their prior knowledge was not taken into account in the learning process; and (5) the teachers did not act as facilitators in the students’ learning activities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe woman trafficking practice in modern Javanese fiction. Woman trafficking was analyzed based on the ideology and causes using New Historicism theory. The findings show that woman trafficking experienced by the characters in all of the stories is the same. They are deceived by procurers and sold as prostitutes in Indonesia and abroad. There are three causes of womantrafficking, i.e. a view looking down on women, woman dependency, and women’s poverty and low education. The stories of woman trafficking support feminism more. Women as victims of woman trafficking can get freedom and autonomy. Feminism ideology is also supported by men. The male characters help the female characters release themselves from woman trafficking by accepting them as their partners.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form and representation of socio-political historical events in Ayu Utami’s novels. The data sources were four novels written by Ayu Utami, namely Saman, Larung, Manjali dan Cakrabirawa, and Cerita Cinta Enrico. They were analyzed using the New Historicism perspective. The findings are as follows. First, socio-political historical events in the novels are: (a) an event in Medan from 1 March to 16 April 1994, (b) 30 September Movement in 1965, (c) the tragedy of 27 July 1996 in Jakarta, (d)the rebellion by the Republic of Indonesia’s Revolutionary Government, 15 February 1958 in Padang,(e)the demonstration by students of Technology Institute of Bandung and the publication of the Student Struggle White Book in 1978. Second, the events are represented in parts integrated into the events that the characters experience. Historical events from factual events are contextualized in the novels. In the New Historicism perspective, socio-political historical events are presented to question historical truths previously recorded.
