Abstract

This study aims to describe the Indonesian society’s cultural orientation in the microaspects of news journalistic discourses. This was an interpretive discourse analysis study. The data were analyzed using two models, namely descriptive discourse analysis and critical discourse analysis. The findings are as follows. First, the Indonesian society’s cultural orientation leads to the typology of collective culture. Second, the Indonesian society’s activities in a variety of social facts show relevance to the indicators of the position of collective culture awareness. Third, the Indonesian cultural orientations include those to: (a)loose and time-free events, (b) holistic thinking, (c) non-critical matters by accepting life as it is, (d) the human relationship with a characteristic of maintaining relation, (e) a certain status, position, and social role more than to achievement and capability, and (f) hidden vulnerability by not revealing a mistake, failure, and weakness openly and publicly

Abstract

This study aims to describe teacher interventions in deaf students’ oral expressions,comprising those in speech acts, speech functions, and speech strategies. It employed thequalitative descriptive approach. The data comprised descriptive and reflective data. Theywere analyzed by means of pragmatics theory, especially clinical pragmatics. The findingsare as follows. First, interventions in speech acts include illocutionary acts, conversationcapabilities, understanding, and narration. Second, interventions in speech functionsinclude directive and facilitative interventions. Third, interventions in speech strategiesinclude context manipulation and pre-symbolic and minimum symbolic interventions.

Abstract

This study examines interrogative sentences in Indonesian by focusing on speechfunctions. The data were interrogative sentences in Indonesian nowadays used incommunication among ethnic groups. It employed the pragmatic approach stating thatwhen one is saying a sentence at the same time s/he is performing an action called aspeech act. An interrogative sentence, which is basically used to ask a question aboutsomething, can also be used to express a variety of speech acts. The findings show that there are four speech acts expressed by interrogative sentences, namely representative, directive, comissive, and expressive acts. Interrogative sentences are sometimes used to express indirect speech acts to maintain politeness (to soften the tone) or to express something firmly, rudely, and even impolitely.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan teknik, metode, dan ideologi penerjemahanteks The Gospel According to Matthew ke dalam teks bahasa Indonesia. Penelitianmenggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data adalah teks The Gospel Accordingto Matthew, pasal 5-7 dan terjemahannya dalam bahasa Indonesia. Hasil penelitiansebagai berikut. Pertama, terdapat sembilan teknik penerjemahan, yakni (a) modulasi, (b)transposisi, (c) amplifikasi, (d) harfiah, (e) penambahan, (f) penghilangan, (g) peminjamanalamiah, (h) reduksi, dan (i) generalisasi. Kedua, terdapat empat metode penerjemahan,yakni (a) bebas, (b) komunikatif, (c) adaptasi, dan (d) harfiah. Ketiga, terdapat dua ideologipenerjemahan, yaitu: (a) foreignisasi yang berorientasi pada bahasa dan budaya bahasasumber, dan (b) domestikasi yang berorientasi pada bahasa dan budaya bahasa sasaran.Secara umum penerjemahan cenderung menggunakan teknik, metode, dan ideologiyang berorientasi pada bahasa dan budaya sasaran. Orientasi pada bahasa dan budayasasaran dapat menghasilkan terjemahan yang akurat, berterima, dan memiliki tingkatketerbacaan tinggi.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to describe identities, roles, and gender relations in children’s novels.The data sources were six children’s novels published by Dar! Mizan.The six novels werepurposively selected. The data were collected by repeatedly reading the novels, recorded,and classified based on the problem formulation categories. They were analyzed usingthe framework of feminist literary criticism, namely woman as a reader. The results ofthe study are as follows. First, gender equality has not been manifested because there isstill gender identity stereotyping. Characters with two identities, feminine and masculine,are described as weird characters. Second, there is inequality in the distribution of genderroles. Female characters have roles in public and domestic sectors and male charactersplay roles in the public sector only. Third, existing relations show varied but recognizablepatterns. The relations are manifested in different forms depending on contexts, sexes,ages, social classes, cultures, and descendant factors.

Abstract

applying a contextual learning strategy of redefinition in Indonesian. This was an action research study involving the students of Class VIII E of SMP Negeri I Seyegan, Sleman, Yogyakarta. The data were collected through observations, interviews, documents, and a vocabulary test. The research instruments included an interview guide, a checklist, and observation guide, and a vocabulary test. The data werequalitatively described. The results showed that the contextual redefinition strategy managed to improve the vocabulary mastery and learning activities. The students’ vocabulary mastery improved after each action cycle. The learning activities included raising questions, examining the correspondence between questions andlearning materials, using dictionaries to verify word meanings, having discussions,and constructing sentences to express contextual meanings.

Abstract

This research study aims to describe (1) the forms of Soeharto-related aspectsand (2) ways of expressing those aspects in the anthology of short stories entitledSuharto claim Cerpen Indonesia.The source of the research data was Soeharto dalam cerpen Indonesia (2001), ananthology of short stories edited by M. Shoim Anwar. All of the short stories (17)were selected. The data were collected through reading and recording techniques andwere analyzed by the descriptive qualitative technique involving data comparison,categorization, tabulation, and inference. Data trustworthiness was assessed throughthe semantic and referential validities and data consistency through the intraratertechnique.Research findings show that 15 short stories clearly contain Soeharto-relatedaspects, and two short stories do not reveal these aspects clearly. Soeharto-relatedaspects are shown through: (1) personification in the form of physical appearance,character, verbal and nonverbal behaviors, (ii) governance and economic strategies,(iii) society’s condition and attitude under his reign, approaching his fall and after hisfall, (iv) spatial and temporal settings related to his reign, (v) the party functioning ashis power apparatus, and (vi) government officials’ life style and attitude. In generalthe short stories do not mention Soeharto directly, but only through certain aspectsor symbols easily identified as Soeharto’s characteristics. Soeharto-related aspectsare expressed through various ways, such as parody, irony, cynicism, and dialectics.The expressions through particular characters parodying Soeharto are the mostapparent, simultaneously using irony and cynicism. The expressions through ironyare the most dominant in the short stories, and in this way the criticisms sound moresubtle and “polite”. This is different from cynicism, which criticizes and defamesones in a vulgar manner. This is a reflection of control imposed on the writers in thepast, who now feel free to express anything without any fear of being arrested. Theexpressions through dialectics are made more intellectually and invite readers tothink.Key words: Soeharto-related aspects, personification, parody, irony, cynicism,dialectics

Abstract

This study aims to describe similarities in literary works written by authors with different cultural backgrounds, namely Indonesian and Indian. The data sources were Selamat Jalan Nek!, a short story by Danarto (an Indonesian author), and Pohon by Monaj Das (an Indian author). The comparative analysis was done by thoroughly reading and comprehending them, identifying similarity points in the structural aspect, and comparing and interpreting such points. The findings show that sequences of events constituting the plots of the two short stories have similarities from the beginning to the end. The ways the authors present the characters are similar, especially in physiological and sociological aspects of the characters. The themes are also similar, namely conflicts between modernity represented by the young generation and traditionality represented by the old generation. The datashow that the similarities are attributable to analogy.
