Abstract

Concerns about the decline of civic culture and the threat of national disintegration have arisen due to the emergence of local and religious sentiments among certain groups with ideologies based on religion in the post-reform era. The author assumes that historically, Pancasila is the result of ijtihad (independent reasoning) by some Muslims together with other groups in society, and the implementation of Islamic Sharia in some regional regulations does not contradict Pancasila democracy. The main issue in this writing is the relationship between Islam and the Pancasila ideology, as well as the implementation of Islamic law.

Abstract

The role of Chinese people in the development of Islam in Indonesia in the past was significant, as evidenced by historical evidence such as mosques and Muslim Chinese graves. The spread of Islam in Indonesia was not only carried out by Arabs and Persians, but also by Chinese people, both those who came with traders from the Middle East and separately. Since Islam entered the Malay Archipelago, especially Indonesia, through traders, it is understandable that Islamic kingdoms first emerged in coastal areas rather than inland or mountainous areas, which generally adhered to Hinduism, Buddhism, or local religions and beliefs. Their main purpose for coming to Indonesia was not to spread Islam but to establish relationships and trade. However, because they were Muslims, their attitudes and actions could influence the local population wherever they were, and intermarriages between them and the local population could lead the locals to convert to Islam.

Abstract

Similar to Eastern philosophers, Gandhi also perceived differences between men and women. According to Gandhi, women are often marginalized while men play significant and dominant roles over women. In a patrilineal society, men are always prioritized, not only within the family but also in religious rituals. The same is found in Hinduism, where men hold more prominent roles in religious ceremonies. However, Gandhi’s thoughts are not detached from the Hindu teachings they use as guidance in daily life.

Abstract

At least three approaches deserve significant attention. First, by tracing the teachings of Islam from its founder, Prophet Muhammad. Second, paying attention to historical Islam, towards the civilizations built by Muslim communities in various parts of the world, in the context of history after the Prophet. And third, by claiming that “Prophetic Islam” and “historical Islam” are not appealing, focusing on whatever actions Muslims are currently taking here. Contemporaneity, therefore, is more dominant and considered more attractive in this latter approach. However, this article seeks to leave behind the complexities brought about by these paradigmatic debates. This article emerges with the intention of addressing the ongoing issues faced by the Indonesian Muslim community, to then be discussed and solutions sought within the broader framework of “religious freedom.” Thus, this article avoids being faithful to any one of the three paradigms mentioned, but rather uses all three as references and foundations for our research.

Abstract

This essay will attempt to discuss specific aspects of cultural thought by Sutan Takdir Alisjahbana (STA), especially those related to values. However, before delving into STA’s cultural thought, the definition of culture as it developed up to the early 20th century CE, particularly within the intellectual traditions of Islam and the West, will be presented. Towards the end of this essay, a comparison will be drawn between STA’s thoughts and those of Yukichi Fukuzawa, a Japanese civilization expert who lived from the mid-19th to the early 20th century CE, whose ideas influenced the direction of Japanese modernism in various fields.

Abstract

The main issue of this writing is the methodology for religious research, meaning this study is a methodological research. Methodological studies fall within the realm of the philosophy of science. In the context of scientific research, there are several key terms that are interrelated and have similarities, namely methodology, method, and theory. Therefore, in the context of this research, it is necessary to first explain the differences in meaning and the relationship between methodology, method, and theory.

Abstract

The globalization sweeping the world today has influenced the lives of communities in general. The rapid flow of information and the increasing availability of various facilities also contribute to the acceleration of this process. Events in one part of the world are now more easily observed and imitated by people in other parts. Naturally, this phenomenon will impact the lifestyle of communities, ultimately leading to global changes. The link between globalization and urban development can be seen as a reflection of progress at a higher level. Are our communities ready to face global competition, or are we still preoccupied with internal urban issues that are increasingly prevalent today? It is concerning that while other nations are busy preparing for global competition, we seem to be stagnating. What steps should the government take to address this issue? This is an important issue that needs to be discussed, although it may seem cliché and like an old song with no end in sight.
