Abstract

This paper describes how the influence of modernization that occurred in Turkey on the interpretation of Said Nursi, who focused on the three important points, i.e. the interpretation on science and technology, the relation of religion and state, and on gender relations. First, for Nursi, science has a neutral nature, because it needs to be appreciated, whether it comes from Islam or from the West. Second, Nursi made formulations that nationalism manifested in the form of blind secularization or excessive Westernization is wrong. Two things above, science and nationalism formula must be an integrated harmony with Islamic values and not detached from local cultural roots. Third, the issue of gender equality and the relation of men-women, for Nursi, must be realized with the aim to mutually, harmonious and dynamic life, not in the form of oppressing and to control each other.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.900

Abstract

This article explaines the i’jaz ‘ilmy of al-Qur’ān in the use of the words sama’ and baṣar. The Qur’an often mentions these two words together in one verse, but what often comes first is the words sama’. This paper wants to know the secret behind the formation of those words using qualitative method, namely collecting data about the object of research in the form of the words sama’ and baṣar. Based on the research conducted, several conclusions have been found that the words sama’ and baṣar in the Qur’an are mentioned thirty-four times, although in some verses the words baṣar takes precedence, but does not change the consistency of the Qur’an in terms of balaghah and its contents. The consistency of al-Qur’an in the mention of the words sama’ which proves first proves that the phenomena that occur in the universe are true, the sense of hearing, especially in humans, is indeed more important than ever since being born into the world until it ends from the world. The words sama’ and baṣar in the form of singular always discuss the individual human responsibility in the hereafter. In addition, it was found that the words sama’ in the form of singular and baṣar in the plural which discusses the signs of God’s power in the world.

Abstract

This article deals with the Qur’ānic interpretation offered by Majelis Tafsir Al-Qur’ān (MTA). It tries to answer several questions: to what extent MTA has interpreted the Qur’ān, how it fits (or does not fit) with its ambitious claim that it does not offer any kind of Qur’ānic interpretation, and how this interpretation demonstrates the development of MTA’s thought in understanding the Qur’ān. This article reaches the conclusion that, although MTA claims not to interpret the Qur’ān, in fact it has made such a certain degree of interpretation of the Qur’ān. Its puritan ideology seems to have played a considerable role in colouring its Qur’ānic understanding. As a result, the claim that it does not interpret the Qur’ānis not reliable and even tendentious.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.896

Abstract

The concept of al-nabī al-ummī has existed since the beginning of Islam. The Prophet Muḥammad declared himself as al-nabī al-ummī, both in the Qur’ān and Ḥaḍth. However, most Muslim scholars disagree if al-ummī means illiterate. Through the linguistic and historical approach, this paper would like to test the question ”whether the implication of al-nabī alummī concepts in the Qur’ānic orthography (rasm) is tawqīfī or iṣṭilāḥī.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.901

Abstract

Abstract

The main focus of this research is the problem related to signs and symbol of al-Aḥrūf al-Muqaṭṭa’ah that are contained in the Qur’an. The questions formulated are 1). How do sufis understand al-Aḥrūf al-Muqaṭṭa’ah and 2). What signs and symbols do they say from the al-Aḥrūf al-Muqaṭṭa’ah. This research is included in the ‘Ulūm al-Qur’ān study. In the term of orientation, this research is included in an effort to explain elements that are still widely debated and not well understood. The data sources used used in this study cinsited of two types, namely primary data sources and secondary data sources. Those included in the primary data sources are the work of the exegesis of Ḥaqāiq al-Tafsīr written by al-Sulāmī, Laṭāif al-Ishārat written by al-Qushayrī and Tafsīr al-Jaylānī written by Abdul Qadir al-Jaylānī. Meanwhile, included in the scondary data sources are some literture that is directly or not realted to this fresearch. The method used in this data collection is literatur data documentation. There are twoconclusion obtained from this study. First, the sufis prefer the inner meaning of the beginning of each surah which consits of Hijaiyah letters, because the outer meaning is difficult or incomprehensible. Second, the sufis differ when they reveal the signs and symbols from the beginning of the surah. There are those who understand it as a sign of Allah and His attributes, and others consider that the beginning of the surah is a sign of the glory of the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him, especially those related to the person and duty as the messenger of Allah.

Abstract

This paper discusses the refutation of al-Būṭī to four arguments of some Sunnah’s refuter groups by examining the perspective of al-Būṭī’s thoughts in text and context in criticizing the Sunnah’s refuter. The method of critical analysis is the main part of this research to uncover al-Būṭī’s point of view in criticizing the Sunnah’s refuter in his work titled Yughāliṭūnaka idh Yaqūlūna as a primary source. The findings of this study are that al-Būṭī uses a text approach to argue the argument of the Sunnah’s refutation on the issue of Sunah authority compared to the Qur’an and the humanitarian aspects of a Prophet. al-Būṭī also use the historical approaches and scientific context in criticizing the Sunnah’s refuter argumentation on the problem of hadith forgery phenomena and the contradiction of ḥadīth with the findings of modern science. This shows that al-Būṭī’s criticism of the Sunnah’s refutation argument is present in a form that is in line with the thoughts of the Sunnah’s refutation itself. Al-Būṭī has tried to follow the Sunnah’s refuter’s way of thinking in contesting the authority of the Sunnah to find weaknesses in the Sunnah’s refuter’s way of thinking itself.
