Abstract

This study examines the practice of Islamic moderation in Kendalkemlagi Village, Karanggeneng Subdistrict, Lamongan Regency, which is inhabited by three major Islamic organizations: Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Muhammadiyah, and the Indonesian Islamic Da’wah Institute (LDII). The harmonious relations among these groups, despite their differing religious orientations, present an important phenomenon amid ongoing issues of social fragmentation among Islamic organizations in Indonesia. The aim of this research is to describe the forms of religious moderation practiced in the community and to analyze the social factors that support the creation of harmony at the local level. This study employs a qualitative research design using a sociology of religion approach. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and were analyzed using Joachim Wach’s cross-sectional comparative method and Emile Durkheim’s concept of social cohesion. The findings reveal that religious moderation in Kendalkemlagi is manifested through inter-organizational cooperation in socio-religious activities, inter-affiliational kinship ties, and an inclusive tradition of village deliberation. Local values such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation) and a strong sense of belonging reinforce social integration within the community. In conclusion, religious moderation in Kendalkemlagi is a social construct shaped by inclusive cultural and religious interactions, providing a concrete model of moderate Islam practiced at the grassroots level.

Abstract

This article presents an in-depth analysis of the concept of madani society (civil society) from the Qur’anic perspective, understood as an ideal social order founded upon justice, welfare, and democratic values. The study aims to formulate the fundamental principles underlying the formation of a madani society and to underscore their relevance in responding to the challenges of globalization, pluralism, and shifting power dynamics in the modern era. The research employs a qualitative methodology based on library research with a descriptive-thematic (mawḍū‘ī) analytical approach. Primary data are drawn from key Qur’anic verses—Q. al-Nisā’ 58, al-Ḥujurāt 13, al-Shūrā 38, and al-Baqarah 143—supported by authoritative exegetical works by Ibn Kathīr, al-Qurṭubī, and Sayyid Quṭb. The findings indicate that the conceptual blueprint of a madani society is constructed upon four foundational principles: (1) justice as the ethical and legal cornerstone; (2) equality of human dignity, which rejects discrimination and affirms diversity; (3) consultation (shūrā) as a participatory political mechanism to prevent authoritarianism; and (4) moderation (ummatan wasaṭan) as a moral and spiritual framework. The study argues that these principles position madani society as an essential counter-power through the implementation of amr bi al-ma‘rūf wa nahy ‘an al-munkar as a form of social accountability. Consequently, the Qur’anic conception of madani society offers not only a theoretical framework but also an ethical-operational foundation for establishing a just, harmonious, and inclusive social order in contemporary contexts.

Abstract

This study critically examines al-Suyūṭī’s claim that all surah names in the Qur’an are tawqīfī, a theme that has received limited scholarly attention. Using a descriptive-analytical method, this article classifies al-Suyūṭī’s arguments in Al-Itqān fī ʿUlūm al-Qurʾān and evaluates them based on the presence or absence of reliable prophetic or companion-based reports. The primary source for this research is Al-Itqān, supported by secondary literature from contemporary studies on Qur’anic sciences. The findings show that al-Suyūṭī’s arguments can be divided into two major categories: surah names supported by authentic hadith, and those derived from scholarly usage without strong textual basis. This study argues that al-Suyūṭī’s assertion of tawqīfiyyah is not fully supported by his own evidence, indicating inconsistencies in his methodological approach. The research contributes to Qur’anic studies by offering a more nuanced understanding of the historical development of surah naming and highlighting the interplay between revelation-based and ijtihād-based nomenclature.

Abstract

This article examines Ramadan fasting as a lived Qur’anic praxis that shapes ecological ethics within a rural Muslim community in Indonesia. Focusing on Bandar Labuhan Village, the study employs a qualitative approach grounded in Living Qur’an methodology to explore how Qur’anic values are embodied through everyday religious practices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation during the month of Ramadan. The findings reveal that fasting functions as a form of embodied moral discipline that reorganizes patterns of consumption, resource use, and social interaction. Practices of self-restraint, moderation, and communal assistance cultivated during Ramadan contribute to reduced waste, mindful energy use, and shared responsibility for environmental resources, even in the absence of explicit ecological discourse. This study argues that Ramadan fasting produces an ecological habitus—a set of durable dispositions that orient individuals and communities toward sufficiency and care in human–environment relations. By integrating Islamic ecological ethics with Living Qur’an studies, this article demonstrates that the Qur’an lives not only through recitation and ritual symbolism but also through ecological practices embedded in religious routines. The study contributes to broader discussions on religion and ecology by highlighting the ethical potential of Islamic ritual practices in addressing contemporary environmental challenges.

Abstract

This article examines the implementation of the values of Surah Al-Ma’un at An-Nur Orphanage in Medan Tembung from the perspective of Living Qur’an studies. The study aims to analyze how the values of Surah Al-Ma’un are internalized, institutionalized, and manifested in social practices of caregiving and organizational relations within the orphanage. Employing a qualitative approach, the research utilizes observation, interviews, and documentation, analyzed through the framework of Living Qur’an and Qur’anic ethics. The findings reveal that Surah Al-Ma’un is not treated merely as a normative-ritual text but is lived as an ethical source shaping social concern, empathy, and solidarity within the institution. The internalization of these values occurs through religious habituation, the moral exemplarity of caregivers, and care-based institutional practices. However, the implementation remains largely confined to charity ethics and has not fully developed into a structurally oriented social justice ethic. This study contributes to Living Qur’an scholarship by highlighting the significance of institutional-level analysis and offering a reflective reading of Surah Al-Ma’un as a foundation for Qur’anic social ethics in the context of social transformation.

Abstract

This study revisits the relationship between students’ religious understanding and their Green Campus behavior, addressing previous findings by scholars such as Hakim, Rohman, Boyes, and Gabriela, who reported no significant influence. Employing a quantitative approach with Structural Equation Modeling (SEM)—Partial Least Square, the research involves 250 Ma’had al-Jami’ah students from four PTKIN institutions: UIN Jakarta, UIN Bandung, UIN Semarang, and UIN Surabaya. Quota sampling was used to select respondents. Findings show that the students’ level of religious understanding is relatively low, with an overall index of 48.62. The four indicators contributing to this score are religious practice (59.19), religious consequences (57.70), religious knowledge (53.05), and religious experience (76.45). In contrast, their Green Campus behavior is categorized as fairly good, with an index of 50.86, measured through environmentally friendly consumption (63.96), recycling (54.41), transportation (67.25), waste reduction (63.71), and energy conservation (80.92). Hypothesis testing reveals a significant and positive effect of religious understanding on Green Campus behavior, accounting for 42.1% of the variance. These results indicate that higher levels of religious understanding are associated with stronger Green Campus behavior. The study thus challenges earlier findings and highlights the relevance of religious understanding in shaping environmentally responsible actions among Ma’had al-Jami’ah students. It also contains ethical–philosophical implications that religious teachings function as a moral foundation and ethical consciousness in fostering ecological responsibility within Islamic higher education institutions.

Abstract

This study examines how faith-based communities engage in interreligious cooperation during global crises and how such collaboration strengthens community resilience. Using a qualitative approach, the research draws upon case studies, interviews, and surveys involving religious leaders and participants in interfaith initiatives. The analysis highlights that trust, shared moral values, and coordinated collective action function as the primary drivers of successful interreligious engagement. The findings show that these partnerships frequently emerge during urgent humanitarian and healthcare emergencies, where joint efforts improve access to resources and enhance community-level coping strategies. Moreover, interreligious cooperation contributes not only to mitigating crisis impacts but also to promoting a more holistic approach to public welfare. The study underscores that integrating interfaith strategies into crisis management frameworks can reinforce social cohesion, strengthen mutual understanding, and support long-term community development. Overall, this research contributes to the growing academic discourse on interreligious engagement by demonstrating its significance in addressing contemporary global challenges and by emphasizing the need for further exploration of how faith-based dynamics shape social welfare and resilience.

Abstract

This article examines the reconstruction of tawḥīd epistemology in the thought of Ismail Raji al-Faruqi as a foundation for the integration of religion and science in the era of globalization. The study departs from the epistemological problem within the modern Muslim world, namely the dichotomy between religious sciences and secular sciences resulting from the dominance of secular paradigms in the modern system of knowledge. Consequently, the development of science has often been detached from ethical and spiritual dimensions. This research employs a philosophy of science approach through library research using a critical-conceptual analysis of the works of Ismail Raji al-Faruqi and relevant literature on the Islamization of knowledge and the integration of religion and science. The findings reveal that al-Faruqi’s tawḥīd epistemology is constructed upon interconnected ontological, epistemological, and axiological dimensions. This framework emphasizes five principles of unity: the unity of God, creation, truth and knowledge, life, and humanity, which function as an integrative foundation linking revelation and reason, religion and science, as well as morality and the development of modern knowledge. Furthermore, al-Faruqi formulates the Islamization of knowledge as a project of epistemic de-secularization through twelve systematic steps aimed at reconstructing the paradigm of modern science based on the Islamic worldview. A critical dialogue with Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, Ziauddin Sardar, and Osman Bakar demonstrates that al-Faruqi’s thought possesses particular strengths in its institutional and methodological dimensions, although it still requires enrichment in metaphysical, ethical, and postcolonial critiques of modern knowledge hegemony. This article concludes that tawḥīd epistemology offers an integrative, humanistic, and transcendental alternative paradigm for addressing the crisis of secularized knowledge and remains relevant as a philosophical foundation for the development of Islamic education and science in the contemporary global era.

Abstract

This article tries to describe kiyai’s and jawara’s leadership inBanten. Kiyai and jawara are prominent figures, who become a symbol ofidentity of Banten, which is well known a religious region and a “countryof ‘ulamā’ and jawara.” The role and position of kiyai and jawara areimportant since the era of Kasultanan Banten until nowadays. Kiyai, withhis religious knowledge and magic competence (acquired from religoussources), serves people as an informal leader. While jawara, because of hiscourage and magic competence (obtained from kiyai), becomes a secondinformal leader after kiyai.

Abstract

The focus of this research is to uncover Islamic life of Baduypeople, who are divided into three: Baduy Dalam(internal Baduy) which iscalled Tangtu, and Baduy Luar (external Baduy)which is divided into twotribes i.e. Panampingand Dangka. Compared to other first two Baduys,Baduy Dangka is more intensive in having Islamization. However, in fact,all Baduys have close relations to Islam, due to their original principle theso-called Sunda Wiwitan, or Slam Sunda Wiwitan. Nevertheless, SundaWiwitan (Slam Sunda Wiwitan) is still simple and sincretic. Even thoughone of Baduy is Islamizing itself, the relationship with other Baduys isrespectable, and religious toleration in between them is well-mannered aswell.
