Abstract

PT. XYZ uses a reverse osmosis (RO) system in demin water treatment. One of the weaknesses of the RO system is the formation of fouling on the membrane, which can reduce the performance of the membrane, so it is necessary to carry out an appropriate cleaning process to remove deposits on the surface of the membrane, restore the separation characteristics, and restore the normal capacity of the system. This research aims to examine the effect of cleaning on the performance of reverse osmosis membranes in the PT. XYZ with requirements for reverse osmosis membrane type FILMTEC BW30–400 IG. The research was conducted for 8 weeks by collecting data on the reverse osmosis control box and control room in the form of product flow rate, feed conductivity, and product conductivity. Based on the results of the study, it can be concluded that the effect of cleaning on membrane performance can only extend the life of the membrane and cannot meet the specifications for the working parameters of the reverse osmosis membrane, which can be seen in the salt rejection, salt passage, and flux values obtained in this study.

Abstract

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) is a versatile polysaccharide extracted from Amorphophallus species tubers. Commonly, extracted crude porang flour still has some impurities which limits the application of utilizing the material. High purity of processed glucomannan flour could satisfy the demand of growing awareness of healthy diet and industrial scale production. In this study, the physicochemical properties of purified glucomannan flour compared with crude porang flour were investigated. Thermal stability of the purified flour was increased indicated by higher degradation temperature, which was revealed by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA). The structural characteristics were investigated by FTIR and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis. In addition, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was conducted to study the morphology and grain size of crude and purified flours. The results revealed that purified glucomannan flour has better thermal stability, higher crystallinity, smaller granule size and significantly higher viscosity compared to crude flour.

Abstract

Dish antennas are essential elements in establishing communication between satellite and earth station. The response speed of the position control process of a dish antenna mounted on a moving vehicle that communicates via NigComSat-1R with a central control office is affected by round trip or time delay. Therefore, there is need to design a control system that will address this problem in order to achieve high speed positioning response. The mathematical models representing the dynamics of the antenna positioning system were obtained. A back propagation neural network (BPNN) based proportional integral and derivative (PID) controller was designed and added to the antenna position control loop. The resulting system was modelled in MATLAB. Simulation results indicated that it provided a rise time of 0.027 s, settling time of 1.06 s and overshoot of 0% at peak time of 0.06 s. This shows that the response speed of the control process using the designed BPNN-PID is 37 degree per second. Comparison with previous controllers applied to the same system indicated that BPNN-PID controller outperformed all of them. Generally, the BPNN-PID controller is suitable for high speed position control of the antenna and improves overall performance.

Abstract

Fly ash-based geopolymer cement has recently attracted attention due to its application potential, as well as being an alternative binder with low emissions compared to conventional portland cement in concrete production. Studies intended on the mechanical properties and behaviors of structural elements produced from class C fly ash-based geopolymer concrete are important to improve the implementation. This study aimed to determine the effect of confinement on the behavior of class C fly ash-based geopolymer concrete and portland cement-based concrete. Six specimens were made with class C fly ash-based geopolymer concrete tested under axial loading. Then, six specimens were made with ordinary portland cement-based concrete for comparison. The variable considered in this study is the pitch of confinement. The effect of the pitch of confinement on the enhancement strength and stress-strain of class C fly ash-based geopolymer concrete was obtained. The analytical model proposed by Richard et al. was selected to evaluate the ultimate compressive strength and ultimate compressive strain of confined geopolymer concrete in this study. The results showed that confinement reinforcement improved the strength and ductility of class C fly ash-based geopolymer concrete.

Abstract

Geopolymer Concrete (GC) is highly durable in corrosive environments, making it a viable material for repair. However, its initial compressive strength was below the 7 megapascals required at one-day age. Adding fine limestone (45 micrometer) can improve GC's density and early strength. This study explores the effects of adding 0 percent, 3 percent, 5 percent, and 7 percent limestone and 1 percent sucrose superplasticizer to GC 16M. The compressive strength was tested at 1, 3, 7, and 28 days, along with slump, permeability, and resistivity tests to assess the durability. The results show that adding 5 percent limestone yields the optimal GC performance for repairing corrosive environments. The compressive strengths were 15.96, 28, 43, and 67.14 megapascals at 1, 3, 7, and 28 days, with a slump of 120 millimeters. The permeability and resistivity results were 0.128 × 10^-16 square meters and 57.87 kiloohm-centimeter, indicating normal corrosion levels. These findings confirm that GC with 5 percent limestone meets the durability and strength requirements of repair materials in corrosive environments.

Abstract

Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC) is an innovative material for such repairs because of its superior mechanical properties, strength, crack resistance, and durability. However, its high production cost, primarily due to using materials like silica fume and cement, is a significant drawback. This study explores the feasibility of incorporating fly ash and local materials into UHPCs to reduce costs while maintaining or improving their performance. As a supplementary cementitious material, fly ash enhances the compressive strength and workability of UHPC. The addition of limestone further supports early-age strength and workability. By evaluating the mechanical properties and workability of modified UHPCs, this research demonstrates the economic viability and environmental benefits of structural repairs. The results indicate that this modification can effectively enhance the early-age strength of UHPC, making it suitable for use as a repair material. The evaluation of the mechanical properties and workability of the modified UHPC suggests that these alternative materials can maintain or even improve the performance of UHPC. Thus, this approach offers a more economically viable and environmentally friendly solution for structural repairs.

Abstract

Photovoltaic (PV) is a device that has the ability to convert solar energy into electrical energy. The most popular way to improve performance in PV is to add solar tracker technology. There are 2 solar tracker methods, namely passive and active, in this study focuses on the passive method where the slope angle of the PV is calculated using astronomical calculations. The difference in previous research is that the PV tilt angle can be adjusted via cellphone, it has a function if the Tracker system is damaged it can be replaced first using this system. In this study, the INA219 sensor is used to measure the current, voltage, and power at the PV output, and the GY52MPU 6050 sensor is used to measure the PV slope. The results obtained from this study are the accuracy value of the INA219 sensor is 98.67% for power and 97.67% for current and there is an error of 1.33% for power and an error of 2.33% for current values. There is also an accuracy value of the GY52MPU6050 sensor which is 99.6% and an error of 0.4%. IoT is also carried out where if the current value is greater, the delay that occurs is also higher. There is also an increase in performance between fixed-based and tracker by 21% in sunny conditions, and 15% in cloudy conditions.

Abstract

Rice is the most widely consumed food worldwide. The many types of rice cause various difficulties in the process of classifying rice varieties. The process of manually classifying rice varieties that rely on human power has drawbacks including the subjectivity of assessment between observers, limited physical capabilities, and longer observation times. In this research a rice variety classification system has been developed using the Convolutional Neural Network with the YOLOv7 and VGG16 algorithms. The rice varieties classified are basmati, IR64, and rojolele varieties. The model with the YOLOv7 algorithm is trained for object segmentation of rice grains and is used to create rice grain image datasets. The model with the VGG16 algorithm was trained by transfer learning and used for classifying rice grain varieties. The model with a learning rate hyperparameter of 0,000061, the ReLU activation function, the number of neurons 256 in the second classification layer, with the fine-tuning training method, has the best performance with an accuracy value of 100%. The best VGG16 model weight is used in application implementation. Identification of the type of rice with the application can be done on the image of a batch of homogeneous and heterogeneous rice grains with various arrangements.

Abstract

The advancement of 3D concrete printing has focused on automation research in recent decades. 3D printing technology is adequate to reduce waste and improve efficiency for construction. Former research on 3D concrete printing used hydration cement based on ordinary Portland cement (OPC), which was not environmentally friendly. An alternative material to overcome problems with hydrated cement mortar is a geopolymer. Geopolymer mortar based on 3D printing is still in its infancy. Mechanical and rheological properties are the key parameters of this technology: yield stress, shear stress, and viscosity. The flow characteristics of 3D concrete printing represented the ability of material transfer along the system of the 3D printing machine. This research utilizes type C fly ash waste as the primary material for making geopolymer 3D-printed concrete. Variations of 8, 10, and 12 M of NaOH concentration were used to investigate the relationship between workability and quality of the geopolymer mortar. Workability testing of 3D concrete printing consists of several parameters: pumpability, extrudability, and buildability. Material identification, including rheology and flowability, is carried out to determine mortar specimens' pumpability, extrudability, and buildability. Several test approaches, such as slump flow, slump, shape retention, and rheometer tests using the vane shear approach method, were conducted to identify the rheological characteristics and flowability of the material. Based on testing of the material's workability, 10 M NaOH concentration variation is the most suitable material for future 3D printing material. The workability of 10 M NaOH is 177.5 mm and the the copressive strength is 25.84 Mpa. This variation meet ACI 318/318R – 14 criterion for building structure.
