Abstract

The sugar cane industry in Indonesia makes a substantial contribution to CO2 emissions, which have a negative impact on the environment and society. This study attempts to incorporate the Internet of Things (IoT) as a reliable indicator of air quality in the sugar cane industry, specifically focusing on the CO2 metric. The research aims to monitor the air quality and provide air quality information. This aligns with the eleventh Sustainable Development Goal, which emphasizes the importance of Sustainable Cities and Communities. The implementation of a smart factory concept utilizes IoT technology to actively monitor and analyze gas emissions in real-time monitoring and assessment of the air quality so that when the CO2 level exceeds the safe limit, it can provide a warning and appropriate action can be taken immediately. The system comprises a PIC microcontroller, an ESP-8266 (wi-fi) module, and a gas analyzer. These components work together to identify and alert users when gas emissions exceed pre-established thresholds. Furthermore, the system provides consumers with regular data and notifications, thereby enhancing environmental management and monitoring. The evaluation of IoT-based CO2 monitoring can raise public awareness and air quality information. Aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals, implementing IoT technology in the sugar industry offers a practical approach to reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.

Abstract

The increasing variety of food choices has led to a rise in diet-related diseases, as people often prioritize taste over nutritional content. The high consumption of sodium and potassium-rich foods has contributed to a growing number of kidney disease cases. While many studies have focused on producing low-potassium foods, these often result in suboptimal growth. Mushrooms are a nutrient-rich food source, but their high potassium content makes them unsuitable for kidney disease patients. This study aims to determine the effects of different growing media compositions and osmolyte supplementation on potassium content, yield, and mycelium growth duration in low-potassium mushrooms. The cultivation was conducted using the baglog method, starting with the preparation of a growth medium composed of a combination of sengon wood sawdust, rice bran, and dried kepok banana leaves, which were sterilized before inoculating mushroom spawn and incubated in a kumbung for 35 days. Mycelium length was observed during growth, and potassium content was tested post-harvest. The results showed that proline supplementation had an effectiveness threshold, with 3% proline in composition B yielding the best hyphae development and the highest yield of 296.67 grams with the lowest potassium content. For glycerol treatment, 5% glycerol in composition A produced the highest yield and lowest potassium content, while 1% glycerol in composition B resulted in the longest hyphae growth.

Abstract

Microalgae have a high lipid content, making them a potential feedstock for biofuel production. In this study, microalgae isolated from the Tanggamus mining area was cultivated in liquid medium from shrimp aquaculture waste. The main objectives were to examine the growth of microalgae in shrimp aquaculture waste specifically in liquid waste, sediment waste, and a combination of both to assess whether these waste types can serve as effective cultivation media, and to evaluate the microalgae's adaptability as well as its role in mitigating environmental pollution. The microalgae were cultivated in the three different waste mediums, and the results were compared to a control medium using walne. The findings revealed that shrimp aquaculture sediment supported the highest biomass production, reaching 17.80 mg/L. The mixed media yielded 15.93 mg/L, while the walne control and liquid waste media produced 9.00 mg/L and 3.87 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, post-cultivation analysis revealed an increase in nutrient concentrations, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, in the cultivation medium. The microalgae strain reduced BOD in shrimp aquaculture waste, especially in sediment. COD in liquid waste increased due to complex compounds and cell lysis. Lipid extraction from the microalgal biomass highlighting its potential as a feedstock for biodiesel production. These results suggest that shrimp aquaculture waste, particularly its sediment component, not only serves as a suitable medium for cultivating microalgae, but also contributes to environmentally sustainable practices by helping reduce aquatic pollution and promoting waste-to-resource conversion.

Abstract

Using coal as the primary fuel in the NPK fertilizer industry contributes significantly to carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, which negatively impact the environment and hinder the achievement of national decarbonization targets. To address this, this project aims to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of switching from coal to natural gas in the furnace unit of the NPK fertilizer production process. As demands for efficiency and sustainability increase, the evaluation of fuel switching to natural gas is underway. This project re-simulates the combustion process in the furnace using Aspen Plus V14. Evaluation is carried out on thermal performance, CO₂ emissions, and economic indicators, including Capital Expenditure, Operational Expenditure, NPV, IRR, and Payback Period. The results show that natural gas achieves a thermal efficiency of 90.11%, reduces CO₂ emissions by 27.5% compared to coal, and yields a favorable economic value: NPV of $76,009.13, IRR of 32%, and Payback Period of 3 years. Based on these results, natural gas is considered a balanced fuel option from technical, environmental, and economic perspectives. It is feasible to implement as an energy transition strategy in the NPK fertilizer industry.

Abstract

Mixing is an essential operation in many industrial processes to ensure uniform material distribution and enhance mass transfer. A side-entry mixer (SEM) is widely used in large storage tanks because it provides effective circulation with lower installation and maintenance costs than conventional top-entry mixers. This study investigated the effects of impeller rotational speed and oxygen flow rate on the homogeneity and flow patterns of a calcium carbonate (CaCO₃)–water suspension during the aeration process. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations using ANSYS and experimental visualization were employed to evaluate mixing performance. The operating conditions included impeller rotational speeds of 500, 600, 800, 1000, and 1200 rpm and oxygen flow rates of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 L/s. The results showed that increasing rotational speed and oxygen flow rate accelerated mixing and improved fluid homogeneity. The flow was dominated by axial and combined axial–radial patterns, promoting uniform circulation throughout the tank. Under the investigated conditions, the best mixing performance was achieved at 1200 rpm with oxygen flow rates of 20 and 25 L/s, reaching complete mixing within 40 s. Higher Reynolds and Sherwood numbers at these conditions also indicated enhanced turbulent mixing and mass transfer.

Abstract

The effectiveness of industrial mixing processes is strongly influenced by impeller type and rotational speed because these parameters determine flow pattern, turbulence intensity, and fluid homogeneity. This study analyzes the effect of impeller type and rotational speed on flow pattern, mixing time, and turbulence characteristics in a side-entry dual mixer using a calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) suspension and water. The analysis was conducted using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and visual observation to identify circulation patterns and stagnant zones. Three impeller configurations were evaluated: dual four-blade propellers, four-blade pitched blade turbines (4-PBT), and a combination of both, operated at 300 and 600 rpm. The results show that impeller type significantly influences the flow pattern, while increasing rotational speed reduces mixing time. The dual 4-PBT at 600 rpm provided the best performance, characterized by multiple axial–radial circulation loops without stagnant zones and the fastest mixing time of 120 s. This configuration also produced the highest Reynolds number of 3127.19, indicating a transitional flow regime that enhances turbulence and accelerates homogenization. These results demonstrate the importance of selecting appropriate impeller types and rotational speeds to improve industrial mixing efficiency.

Abstract

Corrosion poses a serious threat to various industries, leading to financial burdens and infrastructure deterioration. This research investigates the influence of current density, surfactants, and CuSO₄ concentration on the electroplating process of copper onto iron surfaces. Current densities of 0.069825, 0.078069, 0.082062, 0.096939, and 0.129863 A in⁻², boric acid surfactant concentrations of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2, 1.5, and 1.8 g, and CuSO₄ concentrations of 0.40, 0.45, 0.50, 0.55, and 0.60 N were analyzed to assess their effects on the quality of the deposited copper layer. For each condition the deposited layer was evaluated through changes in specimen thickness and mass and through an extrapolated corrosion rate (mils per year, mpy) of the copper anode. Increasing current generally raised the amount of deposited copper, but the relationship with thickness, mass, and corrosion rate was non-monotonic rather than strictly increasing, indicating that current alone does not control coating quality. Adding boric acid buffer promoted a smoother deposit and, at the highest addition (1.8 g), coincided with the lowest measured anodic corrosion rate; excessive amounts, however, are undesirable on adhesion and toxicity grounds. Within the range tested, a moderate CuSO₄ concentration gave the most uniform deposition. Because corrosion rates were extrapolated to an annual basis from very short (5 min) tests, the absolute mpy values should be read as relative comparisons only. The results underline the need to tune, rather than simply maximise, electroplating parameters to obtain a high-quality copper coating on iron.

Abstract

Floating docks provide essential infrastructure for transportation, fisheries, and community activities in estuarine environments, where fluctuating water levels and limited port facilities require stable, economical, and sustainable floating structures. This study investigates the hydrostatic characteristics and seakeeping performance of modular floating rigid dock configurations utilizing recycled 30-L high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic jerry cans as buoyancy modules. Three configurations, namely the Base, T-shaped, and U-shaped models, were numerically evaluated using Maxsurf Modeler and Maxsurf Motions under irregular JONSWAP wave conditions. The hydrostatic analysis revealed that the T-shaped and U-shaped configurations increased displacement by approximately 44.3% and 122.3%, respectively, compared with the Base model, while the U-shaped configuration achieved the highest transverse metacentric height (GMt = 2.144 m). Frequency-domain seakeeping analysis showed that the heave and pitch responses of all configurations remained comparable, with differences generally below 10%, indicating that changes in pontoon arrangement had minimal influence on vertical motion characteristics under moderate wave conditions. In contrast, the T-shaped configuration reduced the peak roll response amplitude operator (RAO) by approximately 23% compared with the U-shaped configuration, demonstrating improved transverse motion performance while maintaining comparable heave and pitch responses. Considering hydrostatic capacity, operational stability, structural functionality, and site adaptability, the T-shaped configuration exhibited the most balanced overall performance for estuarine floating dock applications. These findings demonstrate that recycled HDPE plastic jerry cans can serve as technically feasible, sustainable, and low-cost buoyancy modules for modular floating dock systems.
