Abstract

In 2015-2016, news in online media related to jihad issues developed significantly, marked by the emergence of various religious sites. However, in the Indonesian context, there has not been much literature that specifically explores the relationship between online media ideology and religious issues. To fill this gap, this article aimed to analyze the framing of Islamic online media related to the issue of jihad. This research used descriptive qualitative to analyze the issue of jihad in online media. The Entman framing theory applied in this study, including jihad as war, improving welfare, dangerous jihad, enforcement of Islamic law and jihad against the authorities. The study focused on four Islamic sites of Arrahmah.com, Hidayatullah, Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia, NU online and Republika online from 2015-2016. The results showed that Arrahmah portrayed jihad in the framework of war to uphold Allah’s law, while Hidayatullah.com framed jihad as a real war. Hidayatullah focused on liberating Muslim lands related to conflicts in the Rohingya and Palestine. In comparison, NU Online uplifted jihad for the welfare of the community. One of the biggest frameworks was to defend the state for the welfare of society, eradicating ignorance and poverty, and anti-corruption jihad. In the fourth media, Republika online emphasized social welfare and jihad and pushed it over other news. From the analysis, the issue of jihad was framed differently by online Islamic media. Consequently, the difference was in the selection of events, the frequency of news titles, the emphasis on the selection of words, examples and illustrations.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the readiness of Muhammadiyah elementary schools in implementing inclusive education in the schools. School readiness clearly marks the path for Muhammadiyah elementary schools in organizing inclusive education. Through a case study methodology with a purposive sampling technique, this research investigates the readiness of four Muhammadiyah elementary schools. The data were collected by an in-depth interview and observation and would be analyzed by thematic analysis method.  This research provides worthy indicators of school readiness in executing inclusive education. This study indicates that two out of the four Muhammadiyah elementary schools observed, have not reached the required level of readiness to implement inclusive schools based on the indicators of the school readiness, whereas the other two schools are more prepared to fully run the inclusive education program. This study enhances elementary schools to implement inclusive education by meeting five required indicators: 1) Perception of school stakeholders; 2) Curriculum and teaching and learning activities; 3) Educational staffs; 4) Facilities, infrastructure, and funding; 5) Relationship between community and school. The implementation of inclusive education in elementary schools under the Muhammadiyah institution as one of the biggest Islamic organizations in Indonesia would build a positive perception for all teachers, students’ parents, and school communities.

Abstract

After pursuing a long academic career as an anthropologist, this article provides my (Mitsuo Nakamura’s) personal academic reflection of how my anthropological approach differs from Geertzian paradigm, why anthropology and Islamic studies should be bridged, and what implications of the conversation between Islamic studies, anthropology, and other social sciences are. By answering the above questions, this reflective article sheds a new light on the relationship between anthropology and Islam and Muslim studies in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. The anthropological studies of Muslims in Southeast Asia that have been heavily influenced by Clifford Geertz through his work, The Religion of Java (1960), are engaged critically in this article. If Geertz and his students pay a more attention to Little Tradition (local culture and practices) and avoid Great Tradition (e.g. religious concepts and teachings), my anthropological approach argues for the importance of incorporating Great Tradition, which is Islamic Studies in the case of Muslim studies in Southeast Asia, in the study of anthropology and vice versa.

Abstract

The paper aims to explore the concept of the company from the aspects of Islamic law (fiqh) and sharia, as the basis in determining the company as muzakki, thus raising the legal obligation for companies to pay zakat through the zakat accounting calculation method. This study is designed to reconstruct the concepts of fiqh and sharia in muamalah (economic) activities within the framework of aqidah, sharia and akhlak through ijtihad. The research uses qualitative analysis, through a literature study approach by exploring various classical and contemporary sources. This paper found that the company is synonymous as syirkah on the basis of syakhshiyyah i’tibariyyah (spiritual entity) or syakhshiyyah hukmiyyah, referred to as al-dhimmah, that is, inherent traits of humans, as expert al-form (the right to receive) and syahhshiyyah al-ada (the right to fulfill responsibilities). So, the company as the subject of zakat has an obligation to pay zakat based on five principles inherent in the company as muzakki. The calculations are carried out by using the company zakat accounting method based on established standards (AAOIFI), (MASB), and (IAI). The determination of companies as subjects of zakat, which has the obligation to pay zakat, certainly has positive implications for the realization of a fair and equitable distribution of wealth, as well as the emergence of corporate social responsibility (collectively) and the responsibility of a Muslim (individually) in realizing his worship. to Allah SWT, an increase in community welfare can be achieved.

Abstract

This study aims to explain the contestation of Islam in the public sphere. As the majority religion, Islam always presents a debate about the position of Islam in the public sphere which is often misused for political and power interests. This study uses a comparative study between secularization practices in Indonesia and the West. The theory used in this study is Jurgen Habermas’ view of the public sphere, which is an open means of making every citizen a communicative society. This study shows that the contestation of Islam in the public sphere is very hard by following the ideology of a country in placing symbols and Islamic identities in the public sphere. In Indonesian context, restrictions on religious expression cannot be restricted, let alone to be prohibited by the state as the holder of power.

Abstract

Islam has an essential role in the development of human civilization. As a relatively new religion, Islam has developed very rapidly for over 1500 years. Currently, Islam is recorded as the second-largest religion in the world after Christianity, with followers of more than 1.5 billion. Based on several official survey institutions, in 2025, it is predicted that Muslims will reach 30% of the earth’s population and become the largest religion in the world. Islam was born in the Arabian Peninsula and has spread throughout the world. Muslims can be found in almost all countries, including underdeveloped countries, developing countries, and developed countries. Even the United States, with the most substantial economic, political, and military power globally, is inseparable from Muslims in its development process. Edward E. Curtis, in his book Muslim Americans in The Military, mentioned various historical evidence showing Muslim participation in America. According to this Professor of Religion from the University of Indianapolis, Muslims had played a significant role, from discovering the Americas to defending the north’s victories in the United States Civil War.2 Also, he added that even though Christopher Columbus was the sailor who discovered America, that discovery would be impossible to happen without Muslims.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the problems of zakat governance in Indonesia, with the case study of BAZNAS in Sragen Regency. This is a qualitative research with the perspective of institutional theory. Results indicated that: (1) BAZNAS Sragen has a relatively high transaction cost due to several factors, particularly the costs of seeking information and monitoring; (2) BAZNAS Sragen conducts asymmetric information which is characterized by the lack of transparency, accountability, and fairness; (3) BAZNAS Sragen has a potential to perform opportunistic behavior in the form of political contamination in the distribution of ZIS funds. The less efficient of the governance causes the less optimal performance of BAZNAS Sragen, either in the limited amount of zakat fundraising or in its performance in empowering the poor.
