Social inte-gration is the social process of a particular member of society regardless of the cultural and religious diversity embraced, they are aware of the obligation to build solidarity based on strong relationships in building the nation. The process of social integration can work well if supported by good social norms and cus-toms. Social norms and customs are the elements governing behavior and de-manding how cultured Muslim societies behave. This research is designed using descriptive approach that aims to create a description or description systemati-cally, factually, and accurately about the facts, properties, and relationships be-tween the phenomena studied. The results of this study indicate that social inte-gration in Islam is often found in people who view Islam as an understanding that can be compatible with the values of local tradition, this concept is known as Cultural Islam. Abstract

This article aims to examine the social imaginary toward nationalism from theoritical and bibliographical perspectives. Recently, there has been lack of study on imagined nationalism, after Bennedict Anderson had published Imagined Communities. This study by looking at social imagination and cultural memory, will describe the development of imagined nationalism in Nusantara. It will also survey several literatures on concept of nationalism in the region. It is believed that imagined nationalism in Nusantara has been influenced by many concepts from Western scholars. Thus, study on on this issue by emphasing on cultural memory is still needed. It is argued that it is necessary to conduct more research projects on imagined nationalism in Nusantara by focussing on spirit, cosmol-ogy, system of knowledge, and values among socities.

Abstract

This paper describes and explains the self experience of motive behind the preacher choosing to preach. Preaching experiences in Ambon City still get scorn, insult, ridicule from multicultural environment. Environment treats them with apathy, lack of acceptance, recognition, and less respected in preaching. The preacher conveys communication message of Islam, it is still not able to open mind and awareness, in fact, there are many muslims still follow their ancestor doctrines and cannot think crtically. Messages of religious communication should be communicated sympathetically and rationally. This research used subjective interpretive method with phenomenology approach. Researchers explored self experience preacher, conducted by using data collection through in-depth inter-views and participatory observation with supporting data based on social action perspective. The results showed that the subject interpreted himself choosing preacher as profession for reason and purpose motive in preaching communica-tion. Preacher communication action is not “single,” there is another phenom-enon shows the double motive of preaching, though the phenomenon is not likely to appear.

Abstract

In Max Weber’s notion of authority, charismatic authority will transform into other forms of either traditional authority, rational authority, or both. After the death of charismatic leader, in Weber’s word, charismatic authority is “fated to decline.” A number of studies on Weber and Islam seem to affirm Weber’s thesis regarding the decline of charismatic authority after the death of the charis-matic leader. However, in the context of early Islam, charismatic authority is not declining, even reinforced after the death of the charismatic leader, namely Prophet Muhammad. Therefore, this paper aims to show why charismatic authority after the death of charismatic leader is not waning in the early Islam and how such authority is even reinforced. By using Alasdair McIntyre’s theory of human vul-nerability, this paper investigates “material and ideal interests” of Muslims after the death of the Prophet, which make charisma of the prophet not declining, even more strengthened through invocations and venerations by his followers in subsequent generations. In this regard, the return of charismatic authority takes place not in the physical form of charismatic leader, but in the forms of images, sayings, and exemplary practices of the deceased charismatic leader, which are deemed worth emulating and invocation.
