Abstract

This article discusses the extent to which pesantren in a rural area finances its activities and operates social programs by revitalizing Islamic philantropic scheme. By way of a case study in a village at Kulonprogo District-Yogyakarta, where a small Muhammadiyah pesantren, which is Darul ‘Ulum, has been operating since the 1930s, this article suggests that the ability of this pesantren in engaging the villagers in religious and social activities has made this pesantren survives until now. Unlike other pesantrens, notably in urban areas, pesantren Darul ‘Ulum functions as an educational institution that provides an opportunity to thus students coming from low-income households, including orphanages to study. This paper asks to what extent a small pesantren in a rural area can resolve its budget constrains, how community supports and the culture of giving can, or cannot, underpine pesantren’s social and educational activities, and what sort of challenges for this pesantren to incease its institutional capacity? Keywords: pesantren, philantrophy, community innitiatives

Abstract

Western scholars on Sufism so far have paid more attention to Sufi figures that left us with many written works, either in the form of poems, biography, apologia, or mystical treatise. Practically, al-Jilani only left us with three original works, wherein we do not find any ‘brilliant theory’ about Sufism. So, at the face value, this Western academic indifference about al-Jilani is just plainly plausible. Al-Jilani’s marginal position in the Western academic studies on Sufism in fact is an indication of a subtler ideological bias among many scholars. This article examines the life and works of al-Jilani while proposing a new theoretical basis in the study of Sufism. The writer argues that al-Jilani’s teaching is popular Sufism by definition Keywords: al-Jilani, spirituality, popular sufism

Abstract

Penolong Kesengsaraan Oemoem (PKO) was one of the four first organizational divisions formed by Hoofdbestuur Muhammadiyah in 1920. In particular, as the name suggests, this division was expected to design, manage, and develop Muhammadiyah’s social services. Chaired by Hadji Soedjak, in the period 1920- 1931, the PKO had opened a health clinic (1923) and founded the poor house (1923) and orphanages (1931). Muhammadiyah was an organization formally recognized by the Dutch colonial government since 1914, and therefore, the social activities carried the PKO of Hoofdbestuur Muhammadiyah can be seen as a movement of civil society outside the state. It can be said that Muhammadiyah’s widespread social services represented by PKO, became a resource for Muhammadiyah to put its bargaining position in face of the Dutch colonial government, and Kasultanan Yogyakarta and that of Kadipaten Pakualaman. Muhammadiyah provided the social services to the society when the states absent to put on it.

Topics on sexuality are sill regarded as dirty and taboo. Sexulaity is merely seen among the majority of society as a sexual intercourse between man and woman. This article seeks to uncover the concept of sexuality in al-Qur‘an and Hadith by examining some Quranic terms and concepts and linking those terms/concepts. This research utilizes content analysis and proportional analysis units. The author argues that the concepts of sexuality in Islamic literature is not a taboo given that al-Qur‘an and Hadith mentioned and discussed sexuality from various aspects, including physi- ological and psichological aspects

Abstract

Method of assessing the soundness of hadith (Prophetic tradition) is not only limited to the rule that hadith’s experts formulate and employ. Sufi (Muslim mystical practioner) circles utilize hadith assessment method called kashf (mystical disclosure). This term literally means disclosing or uncovering a hijab (cover). Terminologcally speaking, it means the disclosure of unseen meanings and truth behind textual appearances. In hadith assess- ment context, kashf is a method used by Sufis since they do not follow hadith assessment principles and method constructed by hadith experts. The tradition of hadith assessment using kashf method is a new method that emerged after long time ago after Prophet’s hadiths were collected. This method emerged between the sixth century until the seventh century of Hijra. The first figure who applied this method is Ibn Arabi (558-638 H). Through kashf assessment method, hadith is considered sahih when it does not contra- dict shar‘ah rules. In adition, the hadith assessment using kashf needs to look at the position and quality of scholars who claim to obtain kashf. In turn, this method makes the role of sanad (chain of hadith transmission) smaller in terms of hadith determining the reliability of hadith. In kashf, sanad is directly linked to the Prophet SAW, even without having a person narrating a hadith. Moreover, the time interval between a Sufi who obtains kashf and the Prophet is long period of time. Furthermore, kasfh can make Jarh wa Ta‘dil (examining reliability of hadith narrators) trivial. The method of kashf is rejected by most of hadith’s experts, because it does not hold solid epistemology. The rules are relative, subjective and cannot be objectively defended.

Abstract

This article is derived from a fieldwork carried out in Muara Lingkat, Kerinci- Jambi. The people of Kerinci are ethnically classified as Malay sub-ethnic. Like other Malay people in Sumatra, the people of Kerinci incorporate the religion of Islam or Islamic Shari’a into their customary norms (adat). Customary norms have for centuries played pivotal roles in governing the communities in Muara Lingkat. Yet, the role of customary norms gradually decline in line with the rise of formal institutions in modern society. By analyzing some cases discovered in the field, such as communal conflicts, disputes in the communities, tensions within family members, and the like, the author assumes that that the roles of customary norms become increasingly marginalized and consequently, the role of religion in resolving the problems of the communities decreases. In order to revitalize the roles of customary laws in resolving the problems that the communities in Muara Lingkat face, the author proposes some steps: exploring and reformulating the essence of local customary norms; strengthening local adat institutions; and providing assistance for the communities in establishing adat institutions. Keywords: Islamic dakwah, customary norms, social harmony, kerinci.

Abstract

The advent of Islamic reform in Indonesia at the turn of the 20th century is to be attributed to two scholars or called the second Muslim leaders. They were Ahmad Khatib in Mecca and Rashīd Riḍā in Cairo. Ahmad Khatib was an intellectual leader of mainly Malay-Indonesian section of Jawa (Southeast Asians Muslims) in Mecca when the Islamic reform began to be voiced by Cairo ‘ulama, Muḥammad ‘Abduh and Rashīd Riḍā. One crucial point to discuss in this article is that the two scholars shared similar religious thoughts, which hold a determining role in the development of Islamic reform, much more than the role of Muḥammad ‘Abduh, the first leader of the movement. As can be gleaned from Ahmad Khatib’s works and his intellectual orientation, as well as from the fatwas of Rashīd Riḍā in al-Manār, both scholars emphasized the primacy of pristine Islam (salāf), different from the thought of ‘Abduh. In fact, it was in the hands of Ahmad Khatib’s students that the Islamic reform reached wider audiences in Indonesia and Southeast Asia. At the same time, the early 20th century also witnessed the mounting request for fatwas to Rashīd Riḍā in al-Manār, which greatly contributed to the transmission of reform ideas from Cairo to the region.

Abstract

Since its inception in 1990, Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) was an endeavor to bring and link all Muslim and non Muslim as well, both individual and groups, in Asia to respond and meet the challenges faced by the community in the region. As a Muslim organization, AMAN bases itself on fundamental Islamic teachings based on the Quran and intra and inter-faith element has been essential in AMAN’s activities for the past 20 years. With this paper, the author examines AMAN’s experience on 3 issues. First, the importance of Islam through its faith based organization to look and work for peace of all mankind. In this part, Islam ‘seems’ universal for peace. Second, meaning of peace. There can be different faces of peace depending on the context we face. Thus, question of ‘what is peace’ needs a modification to be “what does it mean to be Peaceful?” Lastly, the challenges for faith based organization to set up inter-faith cooperation in working toward the mutually desired situation that enables peace to foster. Keywords: faith based organization, peace, conflict, inter-faith cooperation.

However, the social, political, and cultural diversities among people have frequently been resulting conflicts or tensions. Using conflict and integration approach, therefore, this article observes the dynamics relation between ethnic groups, Madura and Dayak ethnic in particular, in certain plural regions in term of ethnic diversities; those are Yogyakarta, Malang and Sampit. After describing an extensive theoretical description, the writers proposed hypothesis and then analyze them quantitatively. Such hypothesis consist of the different integration quality between both Dayak and Madura ethnic groups; the different integration quality between Muslim and Christians; the different integration quality between majority and minority groups; the positive correlation between educational level of people and the integration quality; and the negative correlation between social- economic status and the integration quality, etc. In short, the empirical data perform that religious variables have a crucial role in determining the quality of conflict and integration in term of the relation between both Dayak and Madura ethnic.

Abstract

In the atermath of the Reform movement in 1998, Indonesia has bagun to face significant changes such as an increase in the degree of democratization through decentralization. Since 1998, there have been four general elections (1999, 2004, 2009) conducted in Indonesia. These elections include a presidential election by Legislative Assembly (1999), direct presidential elections (2004 and 2009), and elections of local government heads (Pilkada) in Indonesia’s provinces, districts, and municipalities. Under these circumstances, Islamic civil society organizations are and have often been placed in the crossroad of the local politics. Al- Washliyah, the biggest Islamic organization in North Sumatra, is not an exception. It has played a very profound role in local development in which political engagement has been unavoidable. There are many members of Al-Washliyah who works in political parties with various ideologies. Politicians often request Al- Washliyah support especially in moments of Pilkada (regional election). This article focuses on the strategies of Al-Washliyah in development of democratization in North Sumatra, analyzing its moves, involvement, and the use of their organi zation in the electoral politics. It explains the transformation of Al- Washliyah from cultural politics to practical politics in which Al- Washliyah acts much like a political party. Keyword: Al-Washliyah, decentralization, general election, political Islam
