Abstract

This study examines the prohibition and permissibility of defecating while facing the Qibla, based on Ali Mustafa Yaqub's methodology of hadith interpretation. The central focus is the scholarly debate concerning this ruling, in which al-Nawawi's al-Majmu' records four distinct juristic positions. This article critically analyzes Yaqub's textual-contextual hermeneutical framework encompassing majaz (trope or figurative usage), ta'wil (allegorical interpretation), 'illah (ratio legis), and Arab socio-cultural context and situates it within the broader landscape of classical and contemporary hadith scholarship, including contributions from Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Muhammad al-Ghazali, and Jonathan A.C. Brown. The takhrij method is employed to trace hadith variants. The study argues that Yaqub's geographically inflected contextual approach makes a methodologically distinctive contribution, particularly in its application to non-Arabian Muslim contexts such as Indonesia. The results demonstrate that a dual textual and contextual reading is necessary for the accurate and contextually relevant application of prophetic traditions.

Abstract

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah, as pioneers of religious moderation in Indonesia, have a significant influence on education through the development of Islamic Education (PAI) textbooks. The study of the Qur'anic verse used to strengthen the value of religious moderation in PAI textbooks is important, given the diversity of views on the concept of wasathiyah, differences in references, and variations in implementation. The problem of this research is, first, the similarities and differences in the perspectives of NU and Muhammadiyah on determining which Qur'anic verses serve as the basis for religious moderation in PAI textbooks and their application. This research aims to analyze and synthesize studies of Qur'anic verses that serve as the basis for religious moderation in the PAI textbooks of the NU and Muhammadiyah. This research uses a field method with a qualitative approach. The results showed that NU and Muhammadiyah have common ground in making QS: al-Kafirun verse 6 and QS. Al-Hujurat verse 13 is the main reference in developing the value of religious moderation. Students in both the school environment and everyday life can internalize the application of these verses. This finding underscores the importance of inter-organizational collaboration in compiling moderation-based PAI textbooks sourced from the Qur'an. It not only strengthens the nation's harmony and integrity but also increases Indonesian Islamic education's contribution to promoting world peace in the era of disruption.

Abstract

Since the emergence of the idea of Islamization of science by Al-Faruqi from the Middle East to integration-interconnection by Amin Abdulla in Indonesia, there has been no institution that has officially developed this idea institutionally or institutionalized it in education. However, the birth of a new concept of Trensains by Agus Purwanto has been officially institutionalized through an educational institution explicitly named the Trensains school. The presence of trensains schools answers the problem of 21st-century Islamic education from Low Order of Thinking Skills (LOTS), which risks spreading radical Islamic ideology, to Higher Order of Thinking Skills (HOTS), which has the potential to strengthen religious moderation. This study investigates the development of HOT in Islamic education to strengthen religious moderation at Trensains Tebuireng High School in Jombang, East Java, Indonesia. The research method used is qualitative research of the case study type. Data collection techniques were carried out through observation, interviews, and documentation. The informants for this study were the principal and Islamic education teachers. Data analysis was carried out through display, reduction, and interpretation. The results of the study show that Trensains differs from science development in modern Islamic boarding schools, which aim to produce scholars who are literate in science, but rather integrates Islamic boarding schools and science in schools to produce Islamic Muslim scientists. Trensains High School develops HOTS Islamic education through “Integrative Interaction between Islam and Science” learning. On the other hand, this school also maintains NU-based Aswaja learning as the driving force for religious moderation. It turns out that the interaction between Islam and science in Aswaja learning has become a new model of HOTS Islamic Religious Education and strengthens religious moderation.

Abstract

This article examined the concept of leadership in the Quran, focusing on the word caliph, which appears twice: in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 30, and Surah Sad, verse 26. In Surah Al-Baqarah, the word caliph refers to Adam, whom Allah endowed with knowledge, whereas in Surah Sad, it refers to David, whom Allah commanded to rule in justice. Both keywords, knowledge and justice, align with the teachings of Surah Al-Ahzab, which emphasize that the divine trust inherently entails leadership. Surah Al-Ahzab describes humanity that undertook this trust as unjust and ignorant. Based on these three surahs, leadership in the Quran holds a unique characteristic: it defines a leader as a human being who must possess knowledge for self-guidance and embody justice when governing others. Another characteristic is that a leader must avoid the opposites of these qualities: ignorance and injustice.
