Abstract

This paper describes and explains the self experience of motive behind the preacher choosing to preach. Preaching experiences in Ambon City still get scorn, insult, ridicule from multicultural environment. Environment treats them with apathy, lack of acceptance, recognition, and less respected in preaching. The preacher conveys communication message of Islam, it is still not able to open mind and awareness, in fact, there are many muslims still follow their ancestor doctrines and cannot think crtically. Messages of religious communication should be communicated sympathetically and rationally. This research used subjective interpretive method with phenomenology approach. Researchers explored self experience preacher, conducted by using data collection through in-depth inter-views and participatory observation with supporting data based on social action perspective. The results showed that the subject interpreted himself choosing preacher as profession for reason and purpose motive in preaching communica-tion. Preacher communication action is not “single,” there is another phenom-enon shows the double motive of preaching, though the phenomenon is not likely to appear.

Abstract

One of competences that teachers need to achieve is readiness to teach students with various characteristics. Teachers of Islam religion subject in some schools do not have adequate competence to teach diverse students. Slow learners are mostly found in both regular and inclusive schools. The researchers offer a method which can adjust a curriculum to be compatible to students’ conditions namely differentiated instruction method or DI to be applied in Islam religion subject. The goal of this research serves to figure out whether or not DI method can improve learning motivation and achievement for slow learners. The research respondents were slow learners in regular schools. It applied pretest-posttest experiment research method. The research was conducted in April and May, 2019 in Primary School XX in Bantul regency. Data were collected using observation technique, pretest in the form of knowledge test covering previous theme namely sholat (praying) and posttest in the form of the result of knowledge test. Finding revealed that two out of three slow learners did not attend complete experiment process so that there was only one student left. There was a significant increase on knowledge score between pretest and posttest (sig 0,000). This student’s learning motivation improved as well from someone who was previously crying when being asked to come to the front of the class or to answer questions becoming a student who was more communicative.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the readiness of Muhammadiyah elementary schools in implementing inclusive education in the schools. School readiness clearly marks the path for Muhammadiyah elementary schools in organizing inclusive education. Through a case study methodology with a purposive sampling technique, this research investigates the readiness of four Muhammadiyah elementary schools. The data were collected by an in-depth interview and observation and would be analyzed by thematic analysis method.  This research provides worthy indicators of school readiness in executing inclusive education. This study indicates that two out of the four Muhammadiyah elementary schools observed, have not reached the required level of readiness to implement inclusive schools based on the indicators of the school readiness, whereas the other two schools are more prepared to fully run the inclusive education program. This study enhances elementary schools to implement inclusive education by meeting five required indicators: 1) Perception of school stakeholders; 2) Curriculum and teaching and learning activities; 3) Educational staffs; 4) Facilities, infrastructure, and funding; 5) Relationship between community and school. The implementation of inclusive education in elementary schools under the Muhammadiyah institution as one of the biggest Islamic organizations in Indonesia would build a positive perception for all teachers, students’ parents, and school communities.

Abstract

Pornography has been one of the most controversial issues among Indonesian over decades. This article explores Indonesian Muslim views and conceptions of pornography by examining MUI’s (Indonesian Ulama Council) fatwa. In a plural society like Indonesia, Muslims have used an Islamic perspective to the scope and meanings of pornography in order to support the government plan to issue the porn bill (RUU Anti-Pornografi). The author argues that religious and cultural diversities in Indonesia have challenged Muslim discourse about pornography, partly because local culture and customary laws in certain regions of Indonesia hold different views in defining what pornography is. In a broader context, this article suggests that religion has become increasingly influential to pattern of state’s discourse about pornography and the porn bill. Keywords: pornography, fatwa, MUI, Islamic law.

Abstract

Muhammadiyah, one of the largest Islamic movement, has gone beyond a century, and it remains continuously in upholding the ideals of establishing “the truly Islamic society”. What is the Muhammadiyah spirit of sustainability in ad- dressing the challenges of the times? Through library approach, this study finds that the Muhammadiyah movement always loyal to and take inspiration from the three ethos of the Quran in achieving the goal of building a truly Islamic society, those are the ethos of rahmah (compassion), al-Ma’un and al-`Ashr. That ethos has been always established on integrative-interconnective approach between the in- terpretation of the Quran, the sacred heart-mind and the findings of science and technology, and the universal experience of humanity. Rationality is a key of developing the sacred heart-mind capabilities, in addition to experiencing of many nationalities and faiths. From here we know about how to save the lives of people in the world based on the ethos of rahmah. Human happiness is consisting of sincerity, remembering to death, and put science as the key to progress together. Muhammadiyah is also identical with the ethos of al-Ma`un, the religious worth of social praxis. Religiosity tends to reject the formalities of religion for it has been included in the social alignments to advocate the weaks. Al-`Ashr ethos means that religion (iman) and civilization (`amal shalih) are placed as two sepa- rate entities and should be achieved separately. Religion as symbolic formalities is to be important here. Civilization is built through a process of “learning and experiment” and persistency to defeat yourself. Last but not least, Muhammadiyah is no longer overly concerned with the poverty issue, but also regarded to the effective systems and institutions under the effective leadership in building al- hadarah al-fadhilah.

Abstract

This paper examines the rising popularity of Hadhrami Arab preachers among Muslim youths in contemporary Indonesia. The preachers who claim their descent to the Prophet are popularly called as habib (sing.) or habaib (plr.). This study focuses on the late Habib Munzir al-Musawa and his sermon group, i.e. Majelis Rasulullah, as well as his young followers in Jakarta. Majelis Rasulullah is arguably the most popular majelis in Indonesia and has attracted tens of thousands of people in its public preaching. In order to explain its popularity, this study analyses the views and and experiences of his young followers on their participation and activism within the group. It explores both structural and cultural factors that drove young followers to participate in the sermon group. Borrowing Bayat’s perspective on Muslim youth and leisure, this paper argues that Indonesian Muslims participate in the habaib dakwah not only for spiritual shelter but also because they see the majelis as sites to express both their piety and their ‘youthfulness’ in the midst of uncertainty, discontent, and limited spaces for urban youth in Jakarta.
